I think Stanislav has probably covered the issue fully, but I would add that I have a sister-in-law who castigates me for using the word cunt, not because of it's innate offensiveness (it's raison d'etre), but she points out that a cunt is a useful thing, unlike the cunts we write about here - why not use haemorrhoid she says. It's not snobbery from me, far from it. Nor do I find cunt worse than any other word - I just note that it seems exceedingly popular on this site. I just think that excessive swearing makes for really tedious reading.
