No....Shorter life expectancy than where? Swaziland? No. Russia? No. Greenland? No. Turkey? No. Croatia? No. Portugal? Still no.

The UK? The USA? Yes by a "whopping" 0.8 and 0.1 of a year respectively, according to the CIA Factbook.

Ireland ranks 32nd in world wide life expectancy with 77.9 years. Not too shabby though, eh, considering the world average is only 65.82 years.

Wow. A mighty 0.8 years. Our anti-Irish Labour friend really has his finger on the pulse.

and that could be easily explained by Ireland having a far greater advantage in the age structure compared to the UK.

Age structure - RoI

0-14 years: 20.8%
15-64 years: 67.5%
65 years and over: 11.7%

Age structure - UK

0-14 years: 17.2%
15-64 years: 67%
65 years and over: 15.8%

And it would seem Ireland's advantage is increasing whilst the UK approaches negative figures.

Birth rate

RoI - 14.4 births/1,000 population (2007 est.)
UK - 10.67 births/1,000 population (2007 est.)

Death rate

RoI - 7.79 deaths/1,000 population (2007 est.)
UK - 10.09 deaths/1,000 population (2007 est.)Used to be Labournoreply@blogger.com
