Trustees of the Northern Rock pension scheme have demanded the government offer its members the same level of protection it has afforded to depositors after the scheme fell to a £100 million deficit as a result of the crisis at the bank.

Uncertainty over Northern Rock’s future has forced the trustees to switch £355 million held on behalf of 3,280 final salary members almost entirely into Government gilts. This move reduces the risk of these savings falling in value but drastically reduces the prospect for further growth. As a result the scheme has around £100 million less than it needs to pay these members’ future benefits.

In an open letter to scheme members Sir David Chapman, chairman of trustees, said he was seeking additional security for the savings of the bank’s current and former employees from the strategic review being conducted by Northern Rock. This could involve an injection of capital from potential bidders such as Virgin or the Olivant consortium but more likely would require some assistance from the government.

Chapman wrote: ‘We have emphasised to the [Northern Rock] board that members and the trustees of the scheme do not wish to remain unsecured creditors in these circumstances unless alternative additional protection is made available. The board has not yet formed an opinion on whether it can support this request, however discussions are continuing. Whilst the bank’s retail depositors and certain other creditors are benefiting from guarantees from HM Government, the scheme has not yet received any such support from the authorities.’

Chapman warned that the ‘current worst case scenario’ would be some form of buy-out of the scheme’s liabilities by an insurer. Although this would protect the pensions of individuals it would increase the deficit and capital injection required to between £150 million and £200 million.

Surely the best way to avoid this sort of problem is to use public funds to fund leadership and deputy leadership elections in the main parties. The candidates would be relieved of the embarrassment of having to solicit donations from private donors, The public funds could be capped so that there is a level playing field for the candidates.

Anyway, let me remind you, the government generously awarded the Labour Party (and yes, the tories too) £120,000 with the express purpose of telling MPs HOW to handle donations. Now, so far, ONE undeclared donation to a Tory MP has been uncovered. Rather more for ZaNu Labour PF eh? And most of those to Mr. Hain who apparently was too busy to do his accounts.

Now were I too busy to do mine, the taxman would bite my arse. Well, he would do if I had an arse left but as the taxman already has it, he can't. Hain says it was an oversight, so why should he resign. Why? Because he broke electoral law. What? Sorry? Speak up? Oh - I hear you - the law doesn't apply to ZaNu Labour PF apparently, witness various of their luminaries in the same position as Hain, who are hanging on the their jobs and perks (did you know we pay for these cunts, Spammer) for dear life, because apparently breaking the law because of an oversight doesn't count. Is that we don't have enough engineers to build nuclear power plants. Thanks to UK engineering not paying the best salaries as engineers have to keep for jobs on the international market place, and thanks to a government that makes everyone except NHS staff pay for their education, we now have a 40% shortage of degree qualified engineers and can't build any kind of power plant.

If only we could export our quality health-care to pay for all these foreign made power plants we will be installing. Oh, we don't actually do quality health-care do we?

The Daily Mail really goes to work on Hain this morning, linking some of the donations to a group known as the Progressive Policies Forum, a member of which is Isaac Kaye, former Chairman of Northern Healthcare. This outfit are one of seven who are up before the Beak later this year, accused of conspiracy to defraud in fixing of drugs to make large profits from the NHS at a huge cost to the taxpayer. In 2006 Northern were forced to pay the NHS 13.5 million in an out of court settlement. Very sketchy background here, but one that may reveal much more with a bit of digging!

The only reason for not going full speed with nuclear (it would really screw the greenies - so well worth it just for that) is whether the French and the Yanks have held back on any nuclear incidents since the Soviet Chernoybl event back in '86. Otherwise nuclear does now (after the intervening 20 years) appear to meet the practical criterion over safety.

The trust problem in saying "Nuclear" to politicians is that it is like saying "Gold Rush". Hearing those words causes all sorts of rational thought (and probity) to go out of the window.

Would trust Hain to be involved in any of it - he can't even add up!!
