Love is too tame an emotion to describe how we conservatives on this side of the pond felt about this stalwart and true lady of iron. She engendered the noblest virtues and espoused the finest in character qualities as she stood toe to toe with opponents and shoulder to shoulder with friends. I served in the RN for sixteen years and could live with a ship being called Iron Lady. Thatcher reversed plans to reduce the size of the Navy and gave the sailors a much needed (large) pay rise.

Thankfully someone did mention HMS Iron Duke, named after Wellington, so there is precendence for someone who hasn't been First Sea Lord or a national maritime hero to have a warship named after them.

HMS Margaret Thatcher would sound far better than HMS Iron Lady I think and hopefully the ship's crest could even be a coalminer holding his P45 while being taunted by crowd of yuppies waving £20 notes.

WW1 was a war that had to be won and it was. It was the subsequent 'peace' that was screwed up (by politicians, of course).

Unfortunately, the British are still living with the Lloyd George 'it wasn't my fault, it was the generals' memoirs which he published in the 20s absolving himself of blame - don't forget after all he gave the orders to 'grind down' the Germans on the western front.

So, sadly we continue to persist with the 'Lions led by Donkeys' notion, which simply denigrates the sacrifice that was made. I and many others (I am sure some who comment on this site) have relatives buried in France. It is shameful that their efforts and memories are sacrificed on the incorrect, but 'received wisdom' about WW1.

They adopted the phrase "Old Contemptibles" as a badge of pride and went on to win the war.

That was the BEF and it was destroyed and a New Army had to be rebuilt after 1916 using conscripts......that's why some soldiers had two Army numbers.

They did not really "win" the war - it was a case of "last man standing"

You're so on the wicket with so many things, but appears you don't comprehend that all (maybe an odd exception?) politicians are working against the interests of everyone in this country, except themselves and a few mates. Take a step back and realise what is going on in the room, don't just look into the corner where you think the problems lie and you'll expose a hell of a lot more than you will by ignoring everything else. I don't agree with the naming thing simply because I think the tradition of not honouring living individuals is sound. When she's dead, I think the Iron Lady deserves a ship - although I'd pick a fleet sub, personally. Very apt...

And surely, for you Thatcherite true believers, it's really the ideas that matter? So I would agitate for a decent defence budget and intelligent defence procurement if I were you. An perhaps a global strategy devised by someone who'd read at least one history book in their lives.

Incidentally, I'm all in favour of large, powerful, state of the art armed forces at pretty well any cost. But then I'm a Stalinist...
