On the way home from Bath flicked through a couple of papers, the Times and Evening Standard. I'm sorry that I can remember which paper it was in, but one of the journos had done a bit of a survey on the street. He had a great deal of difficulty finding anyone who could recognise the key candidates.

Some did recognise Chris Whoon ? - but then went on to give his name as Nick Clegg.

Despite Lembit's many failings, if he could be persuaded to give up all this 'Cheeky Girl' nonsense [rather unlikely I know], he does at least have name recognition for the man in the street / on the Clapham omnibus, which surely must be essential for any kind of real chance at maintaining their level of support at 62 MPs.

That I believe is one side of their dilemma. However if they do force him out then they need to do it quickly, to have time to settle in. Even so, with both Labour and Lib Dem having a coup, the Conservatives would look the only stable party for government.

Of course Gordon's current slump in the polls is merely the standard post-honeymoon slump. Depending on the availability of international crises, he may recover.

Age should not be the issue, but the physical and mental health of any leader would be more significant. Part of the problem is the secrecy which surrounds politicians' general health. How long did it taken the Limp Dems to admit that CK had a major drinking problem, and how long did the party keep it quite from the general public?

Just because a politician is photogenic doesn't mean that they are going to be able to act decisively or astutely.

The Liberals should do two things.

1) Dump the Democrat bit

2) Elect Clegg as leader.

If they did that, porker Brown and Call Me Dave would have problems but nothing they couldn't overcome.
