Fair comment, Geordie Scoot, but pension funds don't normally bet on exchange rate fluctuations to this level. Bit risky, and if you were to do so the Eurozone would be a better bet since the Euro is required by law to remain firm in the face of rising inflation. By betting on the US $ you are betting that the UK will print £ faster than the US will print $.

Anonymous 2.41: the UK economy is a bigger basket case than the US economy because the US has a manufacturing base whereas the UK has not. The weak dollar is boosting US exports and helping US manufacturers. The Yanks are re-learning that it is better to create wealth before you spend it, a lesson that the UK is going to find very hard in due course. Only the US Government is profligate, hence the contnued need for T Bonds, but since when did any government act responsibly?

Possibly. But 25% of UK pension funds would need to be re-invested in 12 months for this to be the cause. At a time when the Chinese and Japanese are pulling out. And this would assume that these funds have the flexibility to opt into whatever investment vehicle they like - which generally is not the case.

Not in £ terms they aren't. Remember $ is 5% down against £ at present. So investors would be betting that the UK is far weaker than the US - but overlooking the EU.

If. That would be a bet on the UK basket-case economy being an even bigger basket-case than the US basket case economy. In any case you are overlooking the fact that the US economy requires these bonds to be sold to foreigners and with the Chinese and Japanese throwing in the towel it is awfully convenient for the US that the UK has stepped up to the plate to take up the shortfall.
