I was talking about MPs and parties, not, for whatever reason, taking bungs, or MPs having other jobs. However having a limit of say £2000 on election spending, per candidate would'nt stop anyone from putting themselves forward, and might force candidates to actually engage with voters.

As far as representative democracy is concerned we can only vote on the candidates who are standing, the selection of most of those is done by a committee at local level, which is hardly representative or democratic, since their loyalty is to whichever party they are in. Independants can't usually compete against party funding unless, as you say, they have daddy's estate behind them.

In a representative democracy the elected members are supposed to act in the people's interest. Do you honestly think that what we have is acting in the peoples interest?

Oh, and what I said still stands, No one gives donations of thousands without expecting something in return. How does that fit with democracy?

Osborne as Shadow Chancellor needs a strong team. As did Brown when he was shadow Chancellor. Look at the date of the emails - he was on the hook until last December (about the same time that HAin told the Electoral Commission BTW). So much for Cameron saying that the right course of action if you are not sure is dicuss with the regulators - this obviously only applied from last December however - Osborne was happy to act in the dark until then.

Normal business practice when you get an unclear statement such as the final email would be to go back with an example and ask the person giving the advice to confirm and not to rely on such a vague statement.

There was a chunk of money received for Osborne's office in January. All properly notified to the Electoral Commission. Nobody in Osborne's office thought it needed any further registering on the Register of Members' Interests.

Then come November, Labour is deluged in a shit storm, thanks to its donors. Central Office is determined not to be caught out too - so word goes out: it asks "anybody here got any possible problems? Please check."

So someone then looks at this donation again. Wording a bit unclear. So told - "play safe - fucking well check it out. Get a ruling!" So that happens in November. Word comes back in December. Everyone happy.

Except the BBC....desperate to appear "even handed" between the Parties, it alone runs with a complete non-story to its own ultimate embarrassment - but to the glee of the Labour Party, flailing wildly for any distraction (up to and including grave robbing).

Can somebody please tell the BBC that there is no even-handedness due here. This current Labour administration is the most crooked and amoral to govern us in centuries. In any event it is completely different from Hain who committed a *Criminal offence* by failing to disclose donations to the Electoral Commission, and only scrabbled around to rectify this once Guido and others were on his tail.
