The biggest threat to "our culture" is what is spewed at us from the TV and cinema screens. The mass media and marketing types don't help. As previous comentators have said we have gone past our optimum population density and the building of all those "eco-towns" to house all these people will further degrade our ability to feed our own island inhabitants. The issue for me is not immigrants or asylum seekers, it is the illegals. Britain's immigration policy is being decided by dodgy Albanians, Snakehead Gangs and bleeding heart liberals. If something is done illegally it should face the proper legal consequences. If we as a nation give amnesty to an illegal immigrant then where do we stop, amnesty for parking tickets, shoplifting, rape?

1) No mayor of London has the power to grant an amnesty on illegal immigrants in London.

2)An amnesty on illegal immigrants would cause mayhem amongst the British population (meaning: people would go utterly apeshit). We would have riots. The feeling towards immigration into the UK is now at such a fever pitch that any government that put carried out an amnesty would haemorrhage votes. The country would tear itself apart, and the ensuing situation would be ten times more dangerous for immigrants than it is now.

As such, an amnesty is a very silly idea. If one is ever formally announced, I will be straight down my garden to dig my Anderson, and then up to my supermarket to buy everything I will need for a civil war scenerio.

Reimer, the case of Bin Laden's pal is not upholding the laws of "individual rights", but is a decision based on "human" rights law.

Laws based on individual rights are not about protecting someone's right to continue to be a terrorist threat to others, and this chap would be deported.

As for your second point, I disagree with the making of sweeping generalisations and applying them to each individual case coming through our gates.

I understand your POV and the impact increasing numbers have on our public services, but again the issue here is the problem with the way our public services are set up. Private services, in the asbence of govt/council/mayor interference are more adaptable to changes in poputlation. That's why you have so many different cafes/restaurants serving so many different tastes. Imagine if all restaurants were run by Govt! We'd be complaining about the problem fo getting a reservation.

Alot of the side issues raised are not immigration related and we should be questioning the huge problem of State interference (roads, health, education) and why the State should have so many tentacles in so many pies.

But given the prinicple of a free society, minimum state, I favour open immigration (subject to the folks arriving not being threats to us, or with contagious diseases).

In the absence of welfare, the quality of people arriving would probably increase.GF
