I'm with Alice Thomson on this, who comments on Clarke's somewhat confused ramblings in today's Torygraph thus,

The Tories said this was a Geoffrey Howe moment, but Mr Clarke looked more like a squashed hedgehog than a savage sheep ...

Some days I wish we find another alien carcass under the Victoria Line just to have something different to fret about.

The alien carcass has managed to crawl across St James's Park en route from Green Park station to the river, where it will reproduce if we don't stop it. It was last seen in Downing Street. We may have to flatten the entire neighbourhood. Sorry, Guido.

We here at the British Experimental Rocket Group are buzzing over the mess the Government are in. Clarke's painfully awkward audition for a role in the Brown Government should tell us something about the jolly hockey sticks camaraderie of that bunch of miscreants if and when they finally take office. Their self-destructive sniping be a field day for cynics of all stripes, but a dark one for the electorate.

Jesus, I wish Brown would finally just assume the leadership of Labour to finally get things moving!

Police last night raided the home of former Home Secretary, and now notorious subversive rebel, Charles Clarke.

They claimed to be searching for a quantity of highly poisonous material that could inflict heavy casualties if used to attack a high profile target such as Downing St.

The police refused to speculate on how many casualties such a raid might produce but they did put on white sheets and halloween masks, rattled chains and chanted "Be scared you bastards and give us more power!" at journalists.

Unfortunately nobody was shot during the raid. Chief Constable Sir Iain "The Other One" Blair said the officers involved would be disciplined for failing to follow the correct procedures. He promptly produced a Colt .45 and shot a passing cyclist, filling this months quota ahead of schedule. Sir Iain, was recently awarded a CBE for his long time services to manufacturing, mostly in the excuses industry.

Nobody who remembers Reid's shameful performance as a junior defence minister at the time of the Mull of Kintyre Chinook crash enquiry will be surprised by his whitewashing antics as Home Sec.

He did everything he could to attack and undermine the personnel on board the Chinook - who weren't around to defend themselves. His conduct at the time was that of a good Communist who refuses to believe that the system is anything less than perfect and that individual betrayals cause catastrophes.

Andy and Danny - let me enlighten you. The visible target of the attack was John Reid, the invisible (and real) target was Tony Blair. The visible perpetrator was Charles Clarke, the invisible (and real)perpetrator was Gordon Brown.

Cranmer thinks he was sacrificed. Accepting demotion was hardly an option if the fault did not lie with him. To accept this would have been to give credence to the lie. His options were to resign or be sacked. This is hardly a matter of volition.

Clarke wasn't sacked. To deflect political embarassment he was offered another ministry in the reshuffle but he refused. He walked the plank of his own volition. When listening to him whinging tonight on Newsnight and tomorrow morning on On The Ropes don't forget that he's a witless pratt and the world's a better place with him out of office.
