Pink 'Un Euromania is Unhinged

Like many in the City, Guido reads the FT for the markets section and the excellent arts section. The political commentary however is often woeful - it is like the Indy in pink. This morning the leader castigates Cameron for a lack of hard policy positions. Fair enough. It also has this barking Europhile non-sequitur:
Mr Cameron has rightly said he wants to tackle global challenges, such as climate change and migration. To succeed, he must work closely with the European Union. This will be difficult if he is also pandering to the eurosceptic right of his party by pledging to pull out of the EU’s main centre-right grouping.
What difference does it make to global warming if the Euro-Tories agree their line with the French centre-right party or the Czech centre-right party? Mad.

Rupert Murdoch has bought the Wall Street Journal, if the European edition of the WSJ sources more editorial content locally, many in the City will switch, since the FT has already become the preferred journal of record for the Brussels bureaucracy, the WSJ could become the preferred reading of the Square Mile and the business community, which is overwhelmingly wary of Brussels. The FT's centrist establishment tone alienates more readers than it pleases, many of whom feel they have to read the paper on sufferance. Somehow Guido doubts Murdoch's WSJ will be Europhile...

UPDATE : ConservativeHome reminds us that Dan Hannan described the FT as the "Eurocrats paper".

What global warming?

Adam McNestrie said...

If a future Conservative government pulls out of the main centre-right grouping in the European Parliament to join UKIP and various unsavoury far right elements on the fringes, then it will send a powerful signal to Europe that the Conservatives aren't interested in cooperating. If the British government takes a narrow, blinkered, combative attitude to the work of the EU then attempts to secure Europe-wide agreement on these sorts of transnational agreements will be frustrated.

Then people on the right will all complain that the EU cannot agree on carbon trading or immigration. They'll say that it is sclerotic. That is: they'll blame the institutions of the EU for what is, at least in part, the result of British recalcitrance.

I can see what is coming next, the only way to save the planet is to stay in Europe.

Also a country surrounded by water should NOT have any migration issues.

Guido Fawkes said...

Adam they are setting up another centre-right grouping not joining the loons.

Adam,

You didn't advertise your shite blog for once. Is this just for us or have you as usual posted your drivel everywhere els?

Given that the far right and far left are virtually indistinguishable to the layman why is it OK for the EU to be run by communists (Barroso et all), Marxists and fucking Trotskyites (most Labour members) but no one from the right?

Especially given that it's the socialists / communists that seem to love wholesale genocide either through death camps or through incompetence causing famine.

Agree completely. The FT is off its hinges when it comes to politics. It was at one point nothing more than a mouthpiece for Nulabour and its views on Europe are barking.

The EU is the cancer at the heart of our political process and will need to be addressed by a future Tory government.

The EU is a disaster and the FT just makesitself look stupid by trotting out the hackneyed old lines about EU/Global warming etc

Totalitarism = pollution because of no accountability. EU unnacountable, therefore never going to 'solve global warming'. Even if you believe that it exists. Price and freedom from diktat will. Best thing for global warming is change of EU to EEC, that is an area of free trade (which is what I was told I was voting for. Ahhh such innocence). Only deluded lefties and other opportunists cling to Big Government as able to do anything useful successful or even vaguely sensible, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

BTW who is that pratt mcnestrie?

You're assuming us on the Right actually want a system of carbon trading.

As for immigration, shut down the welfare state so that these people have to pay for their own education and welfare and the problem will soon be solved.

The fact that many people beleive that the or representatives in europe *have* to be members of certain other groups shows how little influence any actually has in europe.

The public compromise by voting for a party that may agree with them on one big (or a few minor issues) and gets some person off a party list as an MEP - that MEP may or may not fully agree with the party line on most things - but then goes to europe and is part of a grouping in europe that means the then further compromise what they were going to represent, and then europe ignore (or block) anyone who doesn't agree with their integrationest agenda anyway...

Representation? I think not - party politics is a poor system, adding a layer of european-groupings on top reduces a dreadful dogs dinner to an even worse cats breakfast.

This tells you all you need to know about the EU Parliament:

The EU parliament is, of course, utterly without power or purpose, and is merely a ludicrously expensive democratic fig leaf for the European “project”. So what we need is a Europe-wide Sod-the-EU-Parliament Party, whose candidates promise never to attend or do a minute’s EU-related work, and crucially, to never claim a penny of the salary or the expenses. We could sweep to non-power, leave the EU with a couple of very expensive empty buildings and a lot of red faces, save the tax payers of Europe a sackload of money, and expose the shables of a parliament for the joke it is.

If the eegit writing that drivel for the FT would care to examine the polls, he would see that there is not the slightest need for any policies. It is enough that Dave is not the diseased lunatic in No 10.

Thanks for pointing this out, Guido.

Does anyone who has a job in which it is essential to make REAL money or to take REAL responsibilities like the EU or believe any of the clap-trap about global warming ?

A wider spectrum of people than you realise are unified on your side on both issues, the Beeb and the centrist press simply ignore majority opinion and data that doesn't suit.

Na, Adam you are merely a Cunt, be a good boy, Guido's playground IS a bit rough for you, go see if you can make friends with Toilets gang before everyone gives you a good kicking.

Yeah, the FT is bollocks when it comes to British and European politics. I remember it backing Labour in '92, which I think cost it a lot of readers. It seems to have parroted Militwat's inane line that "you can't be in favour of the environment and against the EU" or words to that effect. We really need competition in this particular market.

After 2010, we really must take our country back. And if Dave won't do it, he will have to go.

I have always reckoned that the FT & Economist editorial staff probably vote LibDem in a Clegg/Laws sort of way. Excessive Europhilia is the inevitable result.

Yes and for good measure re-introduce national military service for 18 year old residents - the fuckers wont want to hang around in Blighty and risk getting posted to one of our many 'Hotspots'

The FT has driven itself into the ground in the UK, through both an excessive interest in overseas companies at the expense of UK coverage and its dubious political line. Its ludicrous love-in with New Labour has completely alienated its traditional readers. I only ever read it now, because it's handed out free at work

“Tackle climate change & migration”!

I have to wonder how you cure anything to do with the climate when, just for starters! We have many millions of people moving out of poverty in places like China & India who all want cars, mobile phones, flat screen TV’s & fridges just to name but a few.
Those goods are things that those people want, & are going to get!
Those items alone are going to make big demands on already stretched resources & add to the ever increasing pollution of the planet!
So what does Cameron do? Ask them not to?!

This green issue is so hypocritical anyhow!
Just for example!
They” have chopped down a massive area in the rain forest to make way for bio fuel crops, which will make money but, the scientist’s have said that the damage done to the environment with the chopping down of the trees will never be made up for by growing the bio fuel crops!

Plus at this time of economic woe do we really want to be paying an extra green tax on top of everything else we have to pay?

I think there is more to this global warming issue than meets the eye anyhow!!

One thing that gets me!
As our planet orbits the sun we are gradually being drawn closer to the sun!
As this happens the planet will heat up & life on this planet will be no more, in the space from now until then are we to believe that because we will never cure this warming up we & our children’s children, etc will be forever paying green tax!?

Migration!
How do you sort that problem when so many people still believe they can be a free sprit & roam about, without having an ID card, maybe a chip put in the arm!
What!
If we kid ourselves that we can have a stable society in this globalised world without intrusive security checks on who is who & what people are doing where ever they are then I believe that this could be a mistake!
Cameron isn’t for ID cards is he, I take it he wont like the chip idea!
Who is migrating!

I see the Marxist name come up in a post above!
Didn’t the red army want a revolution though capitalism?
I think the champagne life style has gone to their heads & the worker has been forgotten!
I always get confused with lefties anyhow!
You can see the same crowd demanding freedom for all people of all kinds! Then in the next breath you have them shouting smash the state & let’s have anarchy!
Strange bunch!

Dirty Rat,

I'm against national service for 2 reasons.

1) It ruins the military.
2) It's slavery.

Lets just get rid of the moral hazard/"welfare" state and things will fix themselves.

The european parliament and commission arrangement is an adaptation of the communist Supreme Soviet and Politburo before the alleged liberalisation of the soviet system.

Google Supreme Soviet and feel the chill. No wonder our present government wants to neuter our treason laws under the guise of modernisation.

anticitizenone:-

"I'm against national service for 2 reasons.

A) It doesn't need to, with a will, sufficient money, and a good professional force. In the USMC, and probably other US Arms the training is exactly the same for reservist or active duty. The trick is NOT to think of them as National Service oiks, but military reserves as in Switzerland - everyone does military training, and national service, and everyone remains in the reserves.
B) A bit of slavery would do a power of good to the modern yoof, who are used to asking, nay demanding, what their country can do for them, rather than what they can do for their country.

I think national service is a damn good idea, and it would be far cheaper and more character building having de yoof vomiting from a 12 mile run in full gear, than vomiting on the street corners from excess lager.

Guido -

Pray tell, how many MEPs from how many member states are needed to set up a group in the EP?

And how many do Cameron's Tories and the ODS have?

And what will they do if they cannot form a political group?

Let us not forget that the war in Korea, Malaya, and other smaller squabbles were taken on by, in the main, national servicemen. Give today's youf 3 months basic training and they will do the same.
What is sadly lacking with a majority of today's younger generation is self discipline and self esteem. Military service would fill that void.

AntiCitizenOne said...

Just make it voluntary to join.

Well said (or suggested) Guido.

The FT has some excellent writers - most obviously Martin Wolf - but any paper that backs Labour and teh current drift of te EU clearly doesn't understand wealth creation.

Also, that bloke Stephens is almost as prententious and boring as Riddell of The Times and Wiggy Richards if the Indy.

Roll-on a more locally sourced WSJ.

"Just make it voluntary to join."

I believe that would be an oxymoron!

If everything in life had to be voluntary, we would be speaking German. How about income tax being voluntary, or contributions to the welfare state? No, I agree with the dirty rat, the dividends in discipline and self-esteem for your "slaves" would be inestimable.

45,

Bizarrely, in Switzerland National Service is indeed voluntary.

You either do a Civil Guard type thingy, check on people’s nuclear shelters (I’m sure there are other options) or you pay a higher rate income tax.

They're bugger all use anyway, all they seem to do is drive up into the mountains with a truck full of beer and camp for a week or two. Better than getting shot at I suppose.

They don't suffer much from burglary either, everyone having automatic rifles at home.

45govt said...

bob:-
"They don't suffer much from burglary either, everyone having automatic rifles at home."

Worth it just for that! Perhaps it's the reason they never have been shot at? An armed society is a polite society. I do think that having to pay if you don't join kind of corrupts the voluntary element a bit.

Ah, so TAT is Guido's sock-puppet: a resort to cheap abuse when his mind is overstretched or over-refreshed.

some english bloke said...

HM Armed Forces do not want National Service because they know that it would turn them into an arm of the Social Services State.
Volunteers and Overseas Mercenaries only, please. Scotch applications in writing will recieve positive discrimination like the Irish and, maybe, Welsh.

Is this true ?
"Mr Cameron has rightly said he wants to tackle global challenges, such as climate change and migration."
If so the deluded cunt and his party can fuck off. Re-brand the Tories as The Bandwaggon Party.

Surely Quentin Peel is the Robert Fisk of the FT.

Businessmen tend to be eurosceptic but big business tends to be europhilic, since the FTSE100 companies rely on global trade. Hence CEOs tend to speak publicly in favour of the EU, which is why the FT also supports the EU. What relevance this would have to the wider public, or even to the vast number of employers that don't get listed in the FTSE100 I don't know. The FT can hardly be said to lead public opinion.
