Smith Institute Used to Sell 42 Days
Gordon Brown is in a lot of trouble over 42 days, his attachment to this Blairite legacy policy has become a trial of strength. Jacqui Smith is going round selling the policy to sceptical Labour backbenchers and implacable opposition.Strange that tomorrow evening of all days, in the middle of this effort to sell this most politically controversial security policy, Jacqui Smith is giving a speech on the issue to a Smith Institute invited audience. Haven't we been here before?
The Smith Institute is supposed to be an independent charitable think tank, set up "to undertake research and education in issues that flow from the changing relationship between social values and economic imperatives". The Smith Institute during the first (2001) investigation by the Charity Commission undertook to stick to its charitable objectives - education in social and economic issues. The second investigation, now into year two, is yet to report.
How does the Home Secretary pushing government security policy in this controversial government policy area constitute "education"? Her speech is on "How can the state adapt its traditional security approach to manage a new and wider range of threats?" "Lock people up for 42 days without trial" will, Guido suspects, be the answer.
This is not even in the charity's remit and is completely incompatible with the Smith Institute's charitable status and stated aims. It is merely a politically convenient platform provided for Jacqui Smith when no respectable think-tank would touch the issue...

Guido,
We have not got any chance whatsoever, under the present dictatorship, to have a proper investigation.
Dame Suzi Leather Chair of The Charity Commission! - quango woman supreme- a labour loyalist will never do ANYTHING to upset her path to the House of Lords.
The answer to everything 42, it says so in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe
"Fiona Gordon's next job?
alexhilton labourhome.org. Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 01:28:52 AM GMT
While it has been known for some time that the Prime Minister's Political Secretary, Fiona Gordon, will be leaving Number 10, there is a suggestion that Ms Gordon won't be going far.
The rumour is that Fiona Gordon will be going into business, providing marketing and campaigning services to MPs, yet there is a suggestion that she will remain on the payroll at No10 as a part-time political secretary with responsibility for liaison with backbench Labour MPs. It is suggested the new role will be for one day a week on a pro-rata salary of around £75,000 per year, paid by the Labour Party.
If this is true, this seems like a shocking conflict of interest. Not only would Ms Gordon retain a Parliamentary and Downing Street security pass, but she will be the gatekeeper to No10 for the very same MPs to whom she will be selling her services.
If those services are of the kind that can be paid for from the parliamentary communications allowance, it can imagined how tempted an MP might be to use the comms allowance to get into the good graces of the PM's gatekeeper.
A conflict of interest on this scale would be an outrage. Spending £15k on a one-day-a-week staffer when the party's finances are dire would be an insult."
Guido what ever happened to the Purnell housing expense fiddle? Why has this story been allowed to die, especially when he's prancing on France 24 practically being declared the great white hope of NuLab? Don't go soft on us.
Maybe not but I wouldn't assume that the current shower in Westminister will be around very much longer so at that time, with a new quango woman supreme in charge, perhaps yet another investigation of the charitable status of the Smith Institute can be instigated? In the meantime, for our general wellbeing, let us wish abject failure to the fragrant Jacky Smith & McBroon.
They are all losers, losers, losers...
Brown and his entourage make me sick to my stomach.
Whatever did the UK do to deserve Snottie McBean?
Radio 4 just announced that ministers are "quietly confident" of winning the 42 day vote and wheeled out some fucking idiot of an MP who is now persuaded to back the government because it "only wants the power" to detain us for 42 days without charge.
We know, you stupid cunt, that is the whole point.
Meanwhile, that odious little shit Nick Robinson, tells us this is not a vote of confidence, because Ed Balls says so and even presumes to speak for the nation. Many of us, apparently, "would instinctively back locking up terrorist suspects for 42 weeks without charge".
Really, Nick? And how would you know what we all think, you bumptious little jerk?
I was disgusted by the Tories by 1997 and was delighted to see the back of them. But the disgust I feel for this deeply dangerous and dishonest government has turned into a deep, visceral hatred. Hatred for them, for all their works and for all their friends.
I doubt I am alone.
Well of course, where do you think Jacqui Smith got her name from?
jaqui smith - might make a good dinner lady one day but otherwise fukin useless.
what a shower of shit nulabour have turned into.
i think 20 years in opposition will do them good
Guido,
Given that Jacqui Smith is concerned about wider security threats to the UK. Does that mean we get to lock up Labour politicians for 42 days (or longer)without trial?
Despite the terrorist threat, I cannot think of a greater threat to the United Kingdom, and its quality and way of life than the British Labour Party.
Guido
Surely you should have omitted the word 'other' from your final sentence?
Why does Broon keep saying that 42 days detention is only for terrorists? It begs the question. How can someone be a terrorist before even being charged? It is precisely because the police and the government are not omnipotent that charges and then trials are necessary to prove guilt.
Then there are all the other laws that Labour claimed were just "for terrorists" and are used to hound ordinary people and dissenters from the government line.
Is Nuliebore institutionally dictatorial or do they have to work at it?
Peter,
Goodpoint, now corrected
Will she be getting her waps out?
If they want to lock someone up for 42 days they should lock a minister up in the same cell.
Please, please Guido, can't you *seriously* take this up with - well who deals with it? - the Parliamentary Commissioner? HM Constabulary (though I'd imagine you've seen enough of them of late)?
This is an abuse of charities law and should be a matter for the authorities. You've got the time on your hands to do the research(can't even go on the lash past 9, poor bugger), go for it. Or (if they don't let you cos you're a Mick) tell one of us what to do, would love to get these bastards over this corrupt s**tbaggery.
"Lock people up for 42 days without trial"
If only the Criminal Justice system was actually so speedy, that you would be brought to trial after 6 weeks.
You can be locked up for years, awaiting trial on remand, once you have been charged with an offence.
The 42 days internment (and the existing 28 days) is about being arrested and held in an interrogation cell without being charged, and possibly without even being told exactly what you are alleged to have done illegally.
This not about the human rights etc. of terrorists, it is about your rights when you are wrongfully arrested
due to the inevitable bureaucratic cockups or false accusations, perhaps by one Hazel Blears new "community cohesion" spies, or a PCSO jobsworth.
Punter @ 6:53 PM.
You are not alone. My hatred is similarly visceral.
Disgusting, repulsive, duplicitous bullies who have systematically ruined this country. The greatest threat and the most clear and present danger to liberty on this island since 1940.
The irony is all the liberal tossers who supported them and helped them get in.
Watch the definition of "terrorist" morph into dissident and protester. Bastards.
42 Days Detention always seemed a little arbitary, but when I realised that this in fact Jacqui Smiths bra size (42DD) it all became clear to me.
The spineless socialist bastards are apparentlygoing to back 42 day internment,a futile attempt to retain their jobs and keep this deeply unpleasant illiberal authoritarian shower in power. These scotchmen teenagers and deeply repulsive women are sewin old Englands winding sheet. They have eroded too many of our liberties and have their eyes on too many more, they must be stopped by civil disobedience if necessary.
Yes Sir, can i help you.
yes. I, erm , I would, erm, like to open an account.
Certainly. In what name should I open it sir?
Erm ..Gordon Brown.
I see.I just need to enter some details .Ohh..that's odd. The screens gone blank. Just one second sir.....Mr Bingley, could you come out here a second.
Perhaps it is high time the (no doubt richly remunerated) super sleuths at the charity commission were put under the microscope.
Two years to investigate the Sith?
Wtf is going on?
Oh Rog - why take a 6 month enquiry if you can spin it out to a couple of years - if they're really lucky there will be a change of 'driver' and they can continue doing nothing and nobody will notice them still being on the payroll - lets face it, does anybody know who is on the payroll off this trough gobbling excuse for a governme...., sorry dictatorship
It will prove to be Labour's Guantanamo without the Bay. The police will end up putting their feet up, ditching expensive overtime and stretching evidence lite cases into internment. Once a suspect has been held for the max this will be bound to influence the charging process - they must be guilty.... throw in some religious excrement and whoopeee DISASTER. How stupid can Brown be? Wasn't it a Labour minister that decided to roll up the IRA like a toothpaste tube?
The technique is well established. Smith announced the update to ID card plans, not to parliament (of course), nor even to an open forum or press conference, but to a tame crowd at the technocratically-minded Demos.
Perhaps they can't trust her to deal with difficult questions.
FFS all you old windy liberal tarts getting you're knickers in a twist. 42 days, so fucking what!
The Smith Institute is not the issue. We know they are they are twats.
The scandal is, why won't the Charity Commission do its jobs? If they read Guido - and I suspect they do - I say: GET YOUR FINGER OUT OR RETURN YOUR SALARIES YOU USELESS GITS!!
I'm listening to Jacqui Smith on the Today programme right now.
She is one almighty cunt, isn't she?
I have the urge to flatten her face with a spade, douse her in petrol, roll her in broken glass, drag her across a field of thistles and then set fire to whatever remains.
Ah, that's better. Now where's my coffee.
She was getting her knickers in a twist some what. She came across wanting and rather vague, in my mind. The humper certainly skewered her on the point of order regarding parliment's role in scrutinising or not as the case may be!!
word verification - "bimuf" - so many connotations hmmmmn
Id feel a lot safer if they actually deported the terrorist fuckers and protected OUR human rights rather than protect the human rights of terrorists!
but no the EU wants to destroy our justice system, so in the long run they can turn it on the people, and Labour will welcome the crushing of anyone who opposes communism. Thing is the left only wanted to use democracy to remove it.
get ready with your ID cards.
welcome to China.
Ah so, you like flied lice and cheeken chow men?
I'll fit in nicely mr welcome to china.
Another stabbing, a fatal one too. When is the whore of babylon Jackie Smith, the worst Home Sec ever (and atht is saying something)going to be fired. Oh no I forgot she has a vagina (God can you imagine the state of it?) the best qualification for that job ever.
anon 9:08
"Oh no I forgot she has a vagina (God can you imagine the state of it?) the best qualification for that job ever."
What the fuck is a vagina?
So Jacqui is arguing for 42 days is she? That old boy Walter shouted "rubbish" when Jack Straw was speaking at the party conference. A man in his eighties was brutally manhandled by a couple of heavies (one of whom had previous) out of the hall and in to the arms of the local plod who held him under the POTA. An old man who had suffered the Nazis in his youth treated in such a way by the freedom loving British. If shouting one word gets you treated like that, telling Broon to get stuffed in public should be good for 42 days.
We shouldn't just be holding terrorist for 42 days, we should be holding them at our borders. This government's limp wristed immigration and border control policy is an open door to many thousands of malcontents. Protect our borders before you take away my civil liberties.
Besides, Jacqui Spliff, the Rt. Hon. member for the Bristol Channel, isn't really what she seems. She is really a Skrull!
Strangely, although I abhor everything related to the current Government of this increasingly wretched land, I have no problem with a 42-day detention for terrorist suspects provided proper checks and balances are in place. I know I have nothing to fear from it. Perhaps not many - or not enough - others can say the same?
Why is everyone always so surprised when this happens, why has it taken people so long to see through the socialist control freak wolf in sheeps clothing that is Zanuliebour. Makes me think sometimes that we really do deserve what we get.
Not that WebCameron and his peculiar batch of public school career politicians will make any difference, they may be swept to office all dewy eyed and fresh faced with the concept of public service and 'making a difference to the lives of ordinary people', but give them a year or so in power and they will be corrupted by it. Always has happened always will.
Anyway, by the time the Bildebecks have finished with our Dave and he has been told how the country should be run in the vested interests of the 'illuminati' we will be in exactly the same position as we are now.
So heres some news for you Dave, we dont want another five years of same again, we want and need something totally different something radical something that will change peoples lives for the better. So no bollocks about being nothing left in the kitty, cut taxes, rip up the human rights act, stop immigration, do SOMETHING before it is too late for all of us
I notice that emerging into NuLab's rationale for 42-day detention seems to be that, in any event, the public would want it.
Is that in the same way that the public would want to bring back hanging; want a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty/EU Constitution; want tax reductions on petrol; want the value of pensions shagged by Brown to be reinstated? And so on - pick your own.
Hypocritical bollocks. But what's new with this odious lot?
Anon, 3-06/@9.34
Change the word "terrorist" detention for "political opponent", then you see what the New Labour strategy is.
You object to the New Labour government, you're a "terrorist" and should be arrested for "re-education".
.......and is 42 day detention for 'terrorists' the same as that surveillance legislation against terrorism which has now been hijacked by Local Authorities to check on the movements of parents/families who have committed the sin of opting for a half-decent school in their area?
Good old New Labour. Is there any freedom that you wouldn't curtail if you could in support of your poxy statist fantasies.
This govenment would do well to take heed of the words of Thomas Pain
"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression, for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
Are they using Number 11 Downing St again, or any other Government building for that matter?
Guido, followed your link, 'haven't we been here before?', to learn that the Smith Institute had paid a US pollster & campaign adviser to formulate an anti-Cameron strategy for Gordon Brown.
Another one of Gordon's conspicuous successes, then. And, of course, the strategy culminating so effectively for the Prime Minister in the current Cameron/Brown poll ratings & the Crewe & Nantwich by-election.
Nice one, Gordon.
concerning gordon brown's 42 day policy of internment; before internment the membership of the IRA was in the very low hundreds. as a result of internment it was boosted into thousands.
gordon brown's policy will exponentially increase the number of terrorists and terrorist atrocities committed in this country.
note to brown: as you were blair's bag man for the Iraq war you already have more than enough blood on your hands. your face saving policy of internment will directly cause the deaths of many british citizens. you are an evil, self-serving cunt brown and it is right that this issue will lead to your downfall.
Well said, punter 6.53pm.
The current state of our society is as a result of our politicians applying the Hegelian Dialectic.
This theory was adopted by Marx and Engels as the very basis of their ideology and its effects can be seen all over the world. No matter what the issue, the invisible dialectic aims to control both the conflict and the resolution of differences, and leads everyone involved into a new cycle of conflicts.
In a nutshell, it is–’create the problem, manipulate the response, come up with the solution’–the solution being exactly where you wanted to be before creating the problem - but the problem and response were necessary to get the solution accepted. ie: thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis.
Orwell’s ‘DoubleThink/DoubleSpeak’ are good examples of the Hegelian Dialectic in action. It is possible–nay, acceptable–to believe in two or more opposing positions and treat each opposing thought as equal to the others. A good example of this is being tolerant of Islam at the same time as supporting gay rights–both of which are fundamentally opposed to each other. I call this the Exhaust-Pipe Syndrome…up which they disappear when asked to reconcile their support for both groups. The 42 days detention is also another example. They need a law to detain undesirables. So they create a problem with undesirables, they then manipulate the response–it’s all for our own good, you see–then they establish the solution–voila, the end of habeus corpus. They can isolate anyone who doesn’t agree with their message or the EU’s policies–a position they wanted to be in before they created the problem but, again, needed the problem to instigate it. The Hegelian Dialectic deliberately keeps society in a constant but confused state of flux. NuLabour are masters of it.
Forty-two days left before NuLab implodes? I can only dream...
By the way, I have established that the number 42 was not just plucked from thin air. It's what it says on Fern Britton's bra tag (left one only). I predict a diet.
Can I also ask what is a vagina? Is it like a Ford Cortina......
In response to Subversive Solutions Said
Which must Beg the Question, who did 7-7.
42 Days is aimed at YOU the British Public, and it will not stop at 42 Days.
Remember they originally wanted 90 Days.
All this stuff coming together, Terror Laws, the EU Capstone, Biometric ID, is all just a Coincidence yes ?.
Thousands of kids go missing each year, why do they Parade Maddie in the Media Day after day after day.
