A Love That Dares to Send Writ Threats

The mini-furore over Andy Burnham's amusing innuendo-rich suggestion of some kind of seduction of Basher Davis after “late-night, hand-wringing, heart-melting phone calls with” Shami Chakrabarti is not something of which Guido would approve. Guido is responsible for Westminster innuendo and Burnham should stay off his turf.

Shami is not happy either, here is her letter to Andy:
I am writing in relation to your recent article in the ironically titled "Progress" magazine. In that article you set out to smear my dealings with the former Shadow Home Secretary. I must say that I find this behaviour curious, coming as it does from a Cabinet Minister; let alone someone with a partner and family of his own.

By your comments you debase not only a great office of State but the vital debate about fundamental rights and freedoms in this country. Indeed you seem reluctant to engage in that debate except in this tawdry fashion.

I look forward to your written apology as I’m sure does Mrs Davis. If on the other hand you choose to continue down the path of innuendo and attempted character assassination, you will find that the privileged legal protection of the parliament chamber does not extend to slurs made in the wider public domain. The fruits of any legal action will of course go to Liberty(the National Council for Civil Liberties).
Shami is getting a bit up herself here, Guido is something of an expert in this area and can see that she does not have a leg to stand on. Any reasonable person can see Burnham was clearly teasing, not really suggesting they were having an actual affair. Shami should hit back with an attack on Andy's mascara looks. Any way, good to see that the Guidoisation of politics has reached cabinet level...

UPDATE : Burnham's office has released a statement "An interpretation has been placed on Andy’s remarks that he did not intend. His comments related to politics and nothing else. He regrets if any personal offence has been caused."

On the 2nd October last year the Telegraph did a round up of the most influential people on the right.
It contained this curious par re La Chakrabarti.
"She, more than anyone, has influenced Conservative civil liberties policies. If there’s a Home Office you can be sure her advice will be sought by both David Davis and Nick Clegg. She is a huge influence on Davis in particular."

Curiouser and curiouser

Miss Chakrabarti left her sense of humour on a train at Waterloo, where it will shortly be found by a concerned member of the public and handed in to Guido.

Shami should rise above these pricks anyway. The biggest joke in the Labour party is they actually still think they're acting like the Labour party.

The full Telegraph piece from October. A Campaigning group that is cross-party - i guess not so curious.

"It is a measure of Shami Chakrabarti’s growing influence that she is the only person to be featured both on this list and the left wing equivalent. And if there were a Lib Dem list she’d be on that too.

She, more than anyone, has influenced Conservative civil liberties policies. If there’s a Home Office you can be sure her advice will be sought by both David Davis and Nick Clegg. She is a huge influence on Davis in particular"

I agree with Shami on this. ...I'm equally sure that Chakrabati has been around long enough to know and understand such tactics, hence the rather public demand for an apology. She knows the political game that is being played here and wants to nip it in the bud. Not sure that attempting the ad hominem approach on the doe-eyed one was the best tactic for Mr Burnham. No doubt he will be returned to the subs bench and we will see some new approach as NuLabour feverishly try to find a way to stop the "Davis for Freedom" campaign from gaining momentum whilst they publicly claim to be ignoring the "farce". Dissembly you see...

I took this comment from Burnham to mean that not only did the Cabinet Minister have grounds to accuse both Davis and Shakrabati of conducting an affair but that he must have received such information from phone-tapping sources.

It is very disturbing that someone who is meant to be a Culture Secretary has defiled the status of his position but also caused immense offence to respective spouses and their friends. It is of course totally connected with his announcement that the government would not contest the Haltemprice bi-election. He was therefore speaking on behalf of the cabinet and with the personal authority of the prime minister.

What an absolute disgrace!

My thoughts exactly.

But on a plethora of issues some unelected minority representative is usually wheeled out and given equivalence in debate despite the fact that the public are actually quite unequivocal in what they want. Thus on Europe, crime and punishment, beat policing, immigration, wind turbines ... lefties have their say in a distorted 50/50 spat and that's alright according to the Beeb because 'it's true balance'. What it gives us is ambiguity in what is a clear consensus (suiting our insidious salami-slicing reformers down to the ground) and thus the silent majority are ignored.

Shami is weighted at least a thousand fold in deserved democratic influence.

In the footballing terms that the tribal team-obsessed twats so delight, Burnham and his Primrose Hill pals are happy to play the man not the ball, so what's so terrible about Shami getting him red-carded?

Burnham may be a twat but he's not a twit. The intention wasn't a bit of joshing, but to try to sour traditional Labour supporters of Liberty against SC by suggesting she's personally warm towards Basher. Anyone who finds Chakrabarti attractive is a danger to little boys, which reminds me where's Ed?

Ruth Kelly used to look like Chakrabarti

I feel most sorry for Andy Burnham - this is the most interesting thing the wanker has ever said and he didn't even mean to say it. That said, this does look a bit of an over reaction but the lady can never seem to pass up an opportunity to get her name in the papers. She is also no saint when it comes to smears - she went way too far on the day of the vote putting a load of bollocks out there that the police/CPS could have charged some of the suspects they held for nearly 28 days much earlier.Strangely that exact same bollocks was echoed by Davis in his commons speech. Disgraceful when both the police and the CPS had denied that very charge when giving evidence to the bill committee. This is all a bit overblown.

Sorry, Guido, but in a face-off between Shami and Andy Burnham, she would get my vote every single time.

That over-promoted smug twit would be dangerous if allowed to climb higher up the greasy pole, and his advance must be curtailed at all costs..

He is a mendacious, mad, bad, dangerous-to-know anti-libertarian who has learnt at the knee of David Blunkett how to turn this country into East Germany. Terminate him.

Labour party

Is like a stupid boy whacking a bees nest, everytime he gets stung he whacks the nest harder!

eventually the boy is no more.

Albion's rousing defenders of Shami, your 7.25 made me laugh. Put me in mind of Britomart in the Faerie Queene, which of course is an extended allegory about New Labour. The identity of the queen is contested by academics. Some say Brown, some say Burnham, some say Michael Foot. My favourite suspect is Atlee.

This whole thread is just bollox, really. What pomposity. "I look forward to your written apology ..."

It's like asking for an apology from a mongrel that just shat on your doorstep.

Announcement
Dennis, my civil partner, and myself have decided to seperate. The split is amicable and no other persons other than Peter Hitchens are involved.
No doubt many of you enjoyed the photos of our union in the pages of HELLO, sadly we have grown apart and Dennis now wishes to pursue new bell ringing projects.

I admit to having "thoughts" about most attractive women. But I've never had one about Shami, in fact I have the same emotional reaction to Shami as Ruth Kelly and a cold spoon.
