Labour PPC "Opposed to 42 Days"

Danny Marten, Labour's candidate for Haltemprice and Howden last year, is the chair of East Yorkshire Young Labour and by all accounts firends and foes say he is a likeable and committed activist. They also say he is opposed to 42 days detention without trial...

Locally David Prescott, son of John, is urging Danny to run. He argues that if Labour don't run "we would be complicit in turning this stunt into a greater farce and show that we're too scared or embarrassed to stand. That'll allow the BNP to have the oxygen of publicity. Would we really want that?"

Well? Do Labour actually have a candidate and activists willing to campaign for locking up muslim lads without evidence for 42 days? Perhaps not...

At least the BNP would get us the hell out of communist Europe, unlike the tories.

The really interesting thing about this is which candidate Conservative Home will support?

After they so spectacularly put paleo-ideology before party yesterday, how could they not support a Labour candidate who espoused their civil neanderthalian prejudices on detention without trial, ID cards and the other manifestations of the surveillance state Davis is standing against?

'Likeable and committed'? New Labour? How does that work, then?

Lieber comprehensively lost the debate on the 42 day detention issue, but cowardly and sheepishly enough flocked into the correct trough to take their bribe. As candidates go from rags to riches through the Nu Lieber machine, Real Politics takes a back seat.
Who gives a shit who sits for Nu Lieber? Dogma elects hung monkeys with as much to say. 600plus MP's and only one has the courage of his conviction - and he is not Nu Lieber

This is ultimately a clear Davis vs Cameron.

Cameron will be flushed out as the oily lightweigt that he is.

don't be fooled otherwise.

My support goes 100% to Davis, I have never liked Cameron and don't trust him an inch.

Hmmm so who is Davis shagging and which paper has got the pics??

yes, it is important to cover yourself when dealing with cameron because he and osborne are a pair of rather useless, self-serving cunts.
but mr davis's position is correct.
if only dave was half the man then we would renegotiate on Europe.
unfortunately cameron is a weasel and cannot be trusted.
note to cameron: until you move on the EU, I am going to make your life a fucking misery.
that's a promise. unlike you, you cunt, I keep my promises.

Amateur 'video bloggers' under threat from EU broadcast rules
By Adam Sherwin, Media Correspondent
THE Government is seeking to prevent an EU directive that could extend broadcasting regulations to the internet, hitting popular video-sharing websites such as YouTube.

The European Commission proposal would require websites and mobile phone services that feature video images to conform to standards laid down in Brussels.

Ministers fear that the directive would hit not only successful sites such as YouTube but also amateur “video bloggers” who post material on their own sites. Personal websites would have to be licensed as a “television-like service”.

It would take courage and conviction for Labour to put up a candidate; so we can expect some window dressing and weasly words as to why they have decided not to!

Another demonstration why they no longer have the right to be in government - in government but not in power as someone more erudite put it!

Emily Maitlis has jsut said "this is the best thing to happen to Labour for the last few weeks"
Why is is that commentariat on planet Beeb can't see the wood for the trees? Davis has caught them on the hop and they simply can't find the right angle to come at this from. This is a good thing for Labour in the same way as the imminent arrival of the Pickfords van at No 10 is a good thing for Labour...

True, we can even predict what they will say ... "We didn't put up a candidate because our polling showed us that we would win"

If the proposed change in the law was aimed solely at Muslims I might be in favour of it. Unfortunately it makes no such distinction and is as likely to be used just as often for people standing at the bar of their local pub that say "I could kill that Gordon Brown, I really could" within earshotr of a local Labour Party activist. 6 weeks of detention for saying unpleasant things about the PM should put most people off making their feelings known in public.

I don't see how Labour could NOT put up a candidate. Problem is, could then find anyone willing to stand on a pro-42 day ticket? See the problem? They had to dragoon backbenchers into supporting 42 days, so how can they find someone that will stand on that basis, with real enthusiasm? Do they want to risk another "Gordon is an asset" moment? If they let someone stand that doesn't support 42 days, how would that look for Gordon? Even his own candidate refuses to support his policy?

How much public support would a pro-42 day Labour candidate have? My guess is that there will be a plethora of public figures and personalities willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with Davies.

Labour are in real trouble. The Beeb haven't the wit to work out how Davies has put Labour on the spot. Labour are fucked. Davies has played this like a well thought out game of chess, and Labour have found themselves screwed from his opening move.

Why all the fuss? Passing legislation to detain people without charge in response to a terrorist threat has been tried before - by Adolf Hitler February 28th 1933.

Oh wait that did turn out quite badly though didn't it? I'm sure all the brave servicemen who fought and died in the 2nd World War are spinning in their graves now.

Terrorists should be locked up permanently. However this legislation is about locking innocent people up, people who can't even be CHARGED let alone CONVICTED.

I'm sure labour have plenty of candidates willing to try and push Brown's Nazi policies onto people, but not by any democratic means; they'll continue to use the backhanders and threats that they've been using recently instead.

Who needs to try and win an argument when you can bully/bribe your way to power? Brown doesn't, not for the next 2 years anyway given the spineless nature of his colleagues.

It's "42 days without charge" by the way, not "42 days without trial".

Who'd have thunk it; the uk passing a law to lock people up for 42 days just because they say they don't like the Prime Minister or his policies; blimey; I wonder what the rest of the world thinks of us now. Hopefully we'll get a UN peace keeping force sent to us who'll physically pick up Brown by the scruff of the neck and hang him to the nearest lamppost, the evil Nazi cunt.

Anonymous said...

Post at 5.41 You have got it spot on. As the "Checkmate" that Davis has played emerges then Beeb will realise that there is no win for Brown anywhere here. Spin it how you like but an exercise in democracy rather than brazen bribery will expose a snapshot of precisely how the country feels about this piece of legislation. It would have been nice if Robin Cook or John Denham had had teh confidence to do somehting similar in 2003.

I am ambivalent about 42 days. I do not accept the "disarray" argument about the Tories (this has come from the top). I challenge anyone to show me how Brown benefits from this stunt.
Seems to me that it is the first fruit to fall from the "Progressive alliance" tree.

And if I were a labour MP then I would not know what to do and where to turn. I'd have to fish from the dustbin the Toynbee nosepeg I had discarded this morning and reapply it for the next 3 weeks (which is precisely what Davis wants). Where does the moral compass point now?

A masterstroke make no mistake no matter how the Beeb portray it.

Good work on this, Guido.

As a radical lefty, I'm in a position of having to applaud Mr Davis for this. Principled? Tory?

Fucking hell!

We need to make sure that the MSM are aware of this, in regards of Zanu-Lab's PPC is against 42 days.

We've got the cunts on the ropes.

If Labour want to keep Davis and liberty out of the news then they really need to decide NOT to contest the by election.

Would they be brave enough?

Well done David Davis. A man of honour.

At long last a true English patriot to make the country proud.

As a Scot Nat I am delighted that the English now have a leader as honourable as Alex Salmond.

The Press and the wankers at the BBC just don't get it. People have had enough of this fascist government.

Cameron won't take us out of the EU post ratification, he's already said that.

Why the Hell not, simply Bring the Troops home, Stick em on the Border, Fill in the Chunnel, Mine the channel, Arm 1 million able bodied Indigenous Brits to back them up then Tear up all six treaties and throw the pieces off the Dover Clffs.

Either that or Vote BNP, their Policy on the EU is basically that anyway.

Labour are fucked whatever they do,if they put a candidate up he'll lose,if they don't they all lose, they'll have bottled it again and Davis will have the airwaves to himself to kick the crap out of Gordo left, right and centre.Whatever they do will damage them,Davis is canny enough to make political capital either way.Already bulletin boards and phone in shows have been bombarded with support for him and his views,he's been as astute as NuLab have been obtuse in slagging him off in typical schoolboy ner ner ne ner ner manner,he's crazy, lost the plot e.t.c.Gordo's lying about the deals he "didn't make" to buy him the result he wanted in the supposed Mother of Parliaments aren't helping either,Diane Abbot's all but called him a liar(surely not) on live TV as I type.

The person who referred to Edward Heath is quite correct. That action led to the IRA gaining support in Northern Ireland. It increased terrorism it didn't reduce it. Another reason why we should all oppose Adolf Brown's plans for 42 days.
