Should Labour Make Family Privilege
an Issue in Crewe & Nantwich?
Two Young Socialists had a good wheeze dressing up as top hat and tails toting toffs to meet David Cameron and Edward Timpson off the train as they arrived to campaign in Crewe and Nantwich. Class war might seem like a good idea against two public schoolboys from privileged monied families.Except Guido has the nagging feeling that it might it be a little unwise given that Labour have themselves chosen to use the hereditary principle in selecting Tamsin to fight the seat.
Tamsin Dunwoody is of course the privileged daughter of the Labour MP who held the seat until her death last month...
UPDATE : Guido's co-conspirators comment that Tamsin's grandfather, Morgan Phillips, was the General Secretary of the Labour Party, and her grandmother served as a minister in the House of Lords before being made the Lord Lieutenant of London. Tamsin is hardly working class...

The voters up there must really be as thick as pig-shit if they cannot see through this "toff" nonsense from Labour.
Twits, and typical of the class warrior position. If so concerned, perhaps ZanuLab should have held it out to someone else, other than Ms Dunwoody?
A more likely pair of cunts you ne'er shall find.
Excerpt form the late Gwyneth's website:
"her father, Morgan Phillips became the General Secretary of the Labour Party, and her mother served as a minister in the House of Lords before being made the Lord Lieutenant of London"
And Gwyneth Dunwoody was the daughter of Labour General Secretary Morgan Philips, I think, so Tamsin is third generation.
Nepotism is only kin deep.
Is Tamsin Dunwood really the best candidate for the Bye=election? But who has forgotten that G Dunwoody was the daughter of Morgan Philipps.
Does this mean that Dave will use men in cloth caps leading whippets to spoil Nu Lab's campaign? Who set up the men in top hats, Blears, Brown or Harman? Perhaps they got dressed up for a wedding and joined the wrong procession.
Perhaps it might be better to have some people going round with grinning Gordon face masks, although they would need danger money.
As a poster on Poltical Betting put it, Gordon Brown couldn't lead a dog.
Is that their only remaining attack on Cameron?
You have to love Liebour - they objected to hereditary peers in the House of Lords because it was the House of Commons they thought should have the hereditaries. What a clueless bunch of hypocrites.
They need to get the story straight re Eton, too. Either Dave is the product of the highest-calibre education this country can provide, and very well-schooled indeed; or he's a toff with no talent, in which case his supposed "privileges" are meaningless. Which is it?
The class warfare card is the last chance saloon for this bereft government. Sadly there are plenty who will fall for it, even as "their" party raids their pay packet to reward their rich friends.
Perhaps in the fullest use of nepotism available, Mr Cameron should use this as the single biggest attack point in the by-election - cronyism.
As in rugger, go for the man not the ball.
So it's wrong to attack the speaker, Michael Martin, because he's working class, yet this is ok...??
Bunch of fucking hypocritical cunts.
Well said Guido - Dunwoody III would never have been selected if it were not for her surname.
btw - I went to a comprehensive school and have no financial inheritance, and I couldn't give two-shits how posh other people are: Like most people, I judge politicians on their policies and to some extent on their personalities. Labour are pandering to prejudice.
Message to Labour: Your own bigotry is always the hardest to spot...
That bloke on the right reminds me of Animal Farm.
The one on the left of the photo really got up a senior policeman's nose (a clip shown on the news last night). So much for the 'respect agenda'.You can put a Pig in a suit but it's still not a gentleman.
A bit difficult for the Tories to attack Labour for nepotism if they're going to be standing Boris Johnson's father(!) in Henley.
Also: I think the Conservatives should use the fact that Labour used a tribute website for Mrs Dunwoody's memory to purposefully electronically garner electoral information.Seen on this blog last week. That shows what they really think of her memory!
Re Dunwoody Jr: Let's hope this cynical and blatant attempt at emotional manipulation of the electorate will backfire.
All you Tory boys, doommongers, housepricecrashers, and the rest are going to have egg on your faces.
Gordon Brown's wise and prudent steerage of the economy over ten years has made the UK the strongest economy in the world. Ever-rising house prices have made UK folk the wealthiest in the world and enabled us to buy everything we ever wanted, and more besides, by cleverly, releasing the equity from our houses.
The fact that the UK has the lowest debt in the world will now enable Gordon Brown to borrow billions in order to ensure that nobody in this country suffers from the global downturn which will devastate countries like the US and Germany but leave the UK unscathed. Why do you think that millions of hard working foreigners flock to these shores? It's because the UK economy is thriving and jobs are plentiful, jobs that lazy, white, indigenous Brits like you Tory lot are to idle to do.
Gordon Brown's recent unpopularity is just a temporary blip and millions of voters will return to Labour once they realise that all this media talk about house price crashes, rising bankruptcies, unemployment etc is just nonsense made up by Tories, BNPers and other doommongers.
Gordon Brown was the best chancellor, and is the best Prime Minister this country has ever had. You Tory boys should get down and your knees and give thanks that we have such a wise, compassionate, and brilliant leader.
I would have thought the top hats and tails would be an own goal. They seem to be the uniform of choice at most Chav weddings these days.
I am sick and tired of the 'Eton toff' label that is constantly being put out by the media.
I heard it being used several times yesterday on TV in describing Boris. Utterly irrelevant where the man went to school.
So what if David Cameron and Boris went to Eton - Tony Blair went to Fettes (which is known as the Eton of Scotland) and many other Labour ministers and MPs went to fee paying schools. Plenty more went to what were in effect were Grammar schools. Many many more now send their own children to fee paying schools or buy an expensive house in the catchment area of a really good state school.
Where you went to school makes no difference to whether you are a worthwhile politician. Winston Churchill went to Harrow and he turned out to be a pretty good bloke to have around when the chips were down.
Class war is absolutely the lowest form of politics and it is not going to work.
Was probably the best day out of their lives, those two...
Get to dress up all fancy and walk around pretending to be posh - unfortunately for them at the end of the day it'd be back to their snivelling little working class lives living in some shitty squalid little hovel.
Back to work in the call centre tomorrow then, ehh lads??
I can't tell if David Smith's comment is supposed to be satirical, ironic or if he's just an idiot. If its the latter then the saying is true, in the land of the blind the one eye'd man is king!
Dude, NOBODY with a name like "Tamsin" could be working class. Those foofy girl's names are strictly wanking class.
Morgan Phillips committed perjury when he sued The Spectator for libel. This came to light many years later. It is to Gwyneth Dunwoody's discredit that she never repaid the damages her father had been awarded as a result of his criminal behaviour.
Tasmin's father the late Dr John Dunwoody was also an MP for 4 years from 1966. He was a surgeon and old boy of St Paul's School.
Although Morgan Phillips was credited with modernising the Labour Party in the early 1940s, he had warned the party against making conditions harder for aspirational middle class voters.
He was famously tired and overwrought at a conference in Venice in 1957 with Nye Bevan and Richard Crossman, yet managed to successfully sue The Spectator for libel. Justice was not done at the time, as the magazine lost the case. All three had effectively comitted purjury, and won.
However, would any of the NuLab trolls like to post the names of all the other people considered for this post of Lab Candidate for Crewe and Nantwhich?
Don't worry, I'll sort Crewe and Fucking Nantwich out!
You Tory boys should get down and your knees and give thanks that we have such a wise, compassionate, and brilliant leader.
You were quite funny when you started this schtick, antagonising some of the more...shall we say... hair trigger visitors to this blog. You're getting a bit boring and repetitive now though. Sharpen up and get yourself a new act.
Stereotyping any persecuted minority group (such as old Etonians or even bald old Fettesians with big ears)is deeply unpleasant.
It's nice to have a Mayor of London and a Leader of the Tory Party who are so well spoken and polite. Manners maketh the man. I say they are a credit to their parents and their school.
As for Brown, it doesn't matter what class you are from: picking your nose and eating it is utterly ill-mannered and he ought to be ashamed of himself.
Don't they look nice, though, properly dressed for once?
The tory toff bit really is the pits. It says a lot more about the bakruptcy of socialism and zanulabour if this is the best that they can do. It is pathetic. To me it just looks like labour has more interest in maintaining a class structure than the 'toffs' do.
Tossers
Of course, the one thing noone mentions when Eton Toffs are mentioned is that, in general, they are brought up to lead.Tony Blair, admittedly from a minor Scottish Public School, would have had this instilled in him too.
That compares rather favourably with the likes of Gordon Brown, who, apart from leading by committee, can't even make his mind up on what he actually stands for.Or doesn't.
Leadership is what is needed. Labour doesn't have it.
I can see precious few people here have ever been involved in a parliamentary byelection.
They are vicious in the gutter battles and fair play to Labour for not wasting any time in getting stuck in.
Whether it is the right tactic is debatable, but inflicting maximum personal damage on the Tory candidate is certainly the right strategy.
'tired and overwrought' is that a euphemism for when Labourites are tied-up and beaten for hours on end?

Errr. I don't often wear a standard tie with a white tie tails, and it's pretty traditional to go with a waistcoat, top button done up (are these school kids?!). Must admit though, the lilac is rather fetching if BHS won't sell you a properly starched shirt.

Quite funny my arse, man/woman/cunt is a knob jockey. A very unfunny fucking knob jockey too!
Gordon said we were to talk posh and look like cunts for the day. He said we didn't do it very well so gave us a proper good (spit) roasting. My arse feels on fire what, tally fucking ho!
What gives them away is the inner-city, pasty-faced Gordon Brown zombie look. These 2 just look like they've spent their lives indoors with a regular supply of Ginsters.
"They need to get the story straight re Eton, too. Either Dave is the product of the highest-calibre education this country can provide, and very well-schooled indeed; or he's a toff with no talent, in which case his supposed "privileges" are meaningless. Which is it?"
There are plenty of thick talentless toffs who were educated at Eton.
The working class,
Can kiss my Ass,
'cos I've got my mothers'
Job at last!
All these years they have had to abolish the House of Lords and private schools and private health and private pensions etc
They could get rid of huge numbers of non elected toffs at the Lords.. I think it was even a manifesto commitment..
Yet once in power they 'reformed' eg sold peerages and made money from it instead.
Labour love the idea of class war.. it excuses all their failures..
'We is just poor chimney sweeps who don't know not nuffink, or nohow, an never even learned to count more than our toes'
Its 2008 not 1908 you spanners.
If you served in WW1 when miners met squires for the first time ever you would be 108 years old now.
Are they really saying nothing has changed in all this time. Haven't they been in power a few times since the 1920's? What were they doing to abolish class privilege?
They weren't making themselves the new toffs were they Lord Kinnock? Lord Levy? LordAhmed? Lord Irvine or the other 214 current Labour Lords.
They weren't making themselves the new Rich were they.. Tony Blair and your 6 homes?
No, that would be really like a betrayal of their beliefs wouldn't it?
Let's ask Speaker Martin for clarification of what privilege is.
Quite funny my arse, man/woman/cunt is a knob jockey. A very unfunny fucking knob jockey too!
I going to take a guess that David Smith is arch housepricecrash.co.uk mentalist and enthusiastic gayer Bruno Powroznik. The long, repetitive, almost mechanical rant about how the economy is fundamentally sound is definitely one of his trademarks. The man is an epic bore, and quite likely mad, but I still got a chuckle out of seeing you get all steamed up.
Maybe the handsome, bronzed young chap on the right might to his benefit join Arabella Weir in her hunger strike.
What the fuck do they know about politics, anyway? How old are they? Fifteen? Back to schoool boys before the community support officer comes along.
Let's see what garb they adopt in two years when NuLab are at the polls. Someone should gently explain to them the notion of stunts like this and the expression 'hostage to fortune'. (Mind you, a lot of Nulab politicians might attach the phrase to a lot of the bollocks they are spouting post election-hammering).
Guido, I notice you call them 'two young socialists'. If that's the case what the fuck are they doing within a country mile of NuLab?
Apparently Gary Elsby approached C&N about an interview, but they didn't even have the decency to reply. Since he has been a loyal hoofer (however misguided) and worked like stink in Stoke on Trent, one can only conclude they thought he was too much of a bleedin' oik and not nearly related enough to the aristos to be even considered for the job.
Why does Gary keep going back to them? Perhaps it is like Stockholm syndrome where the victim identifies with the captors.
But did you hear the passers-by in the street in Crewe yesterday when Sky News were talking to them re David Cameron's visit? They didn't seem very impressed with Labour or their candidate, to put it mildly.
One chap said fiercely "I'm fed up with Labour, I want my country back"
Another lady said she had never voted Conservative in her life - but this time she was going to!
Neither of them looked like wealthy toffs, in case anyone was wondering.........
Despite NuLab trying to gloss over their appalling behaviour in canvassing before the late MP's funeral - I'm sure I'm not the only person to think (even) less of Tamsin Dunwoody that she could be bouncing round the streets of Crewe wearing a pink suit and a silly rosette trying to grab her mother's Parliamentary seat before her mother's body is hardly cold.
If Labour are so much the party of the low paid and down trodden how on earth can they afford top hat and tails?
And it would be interesting to know who the two gentlemen in question are.
My experience of "young socialists" is that they are careerist ex-public school types or selective academies rather than horny handed sons of the council estates.
I'm sure an enterprising journalist would be able to find out.
Ian_qt
But they can, in a backhanded sort of way, by pretending to make a virtue out of nepotism.
All Cameron's got to do is compliment Mr Brown on the fact his party is stealing another Tory policy.
The socilaists will never be able to use the nepotism charge again. At least not without much hilarity.
btw, Rich Jon,
Who says these two idiots come from a grotty working class background. Given the current membership of the Labour Party leadership they could equally be sons of privilege and toppers and tails could be their school uniform.
Whatever, one can always hope they got mistakenly beaten up by real working class types on their way home.

Unless you were posted to the Dardenelles, of course.
Well no-one's mentioned Emily & Hilary Benn; Peter Mandelson (Herbert Morrison's grandson); Hilary Armstrong (took on her father's seat in 1987)
For a party that doesn't believe in the hereditary principle - the Labour Party does seem to employ it an awful lot.
It will be like 'I Claudius' when it comes to Nicky, Euan, Katherine and Leo all competing for their dad's old job of Emperor.
Speaking of putting on 'airs and graces'....
Tamsin's first name is actually "Moyra", but clearly she thinks that's too bland for someone of her class.
Reading a 2004 profile of Tamsin (and her mother) in The Times; she says this about the time her mother and father both lost their seats in the 70's:
"Of course, then there was another upheaval. Dad went back into general practice, while Mum found work in the film industry. It was all very glamorous. We'd go with her to Cannes and other film festivals, where we'd be fighting
for seats with Donald Sutherland"
Mmmm yes, I'm sure that will resonate with the masses struggling to find an extra 10% tax.

No one called Tamsin is working class, especially with the middle name of Nepotismia.
ah, pantomime politics.
I suppose that ugly freak andy 'id cards and eye shadow' burnham and gordon 'the rimmer' brown could be the ugly sisters.
these spastics don't get it, do they? I mean, who gives a fuck if two spastic socialists want to dress up in top hats.
I'm more concerned about alistair darling stealing food from poor people.
the two retards pictured are just bloodsucking clowns. infact these two cunts aren't even getting on the list.
If the Labour MP's - every single one of them - were truly committed to the cause of the Workers...then why are they virtually all happy to accept the never-ending inflation-busting pay rises and expenses paid for by the pittance taxes of the low paid and , quite honestly, a fair proportion of the 'Middle Classes' (aka the Milch Cows)???
Hypocricy/nepotism/corruption...they far outdo anything the dying days of major's government did... at least most of the fools then just bonked their secretaries...
Labour are the party of hypocricy, sleaze, self-gratification at the poor's expense and the selling-out of the last vestige's of this once-noble realm's strengths to the EU non-elected faceless Gruppenfuhrers.
The public should be allowed a vote as to who to assest strip in a tax raid without exemption! I can think of a few for the tumbrils...
Labour has never been a working class party as such - it's representatives have always been more like the political wing of the methodists.
So it is a little unfair to attack Tamsin for her class roots.
Though it is fair to point to the hereditary principle at work in the Labour party - the Benn's, Alexander's etc.
The " Tory Toff " thing did not work against Boris so why should it work in favour of Tamsin ?
The Labour Party have no idea how much their own grass roots people have turned against them largely because of their hypocracy.
They look like a couple of Lib Dem bum boys to me
