23 year-old Robert Smith will be announced as the Green Party candidate shortly. He was selected after the person scheduled to be the candidate decided they did not fancy fighting a by-election in the full glare of publicity. The Greens didn't fight the seat at the general election so this skews the psephological balance a little. Don't expect a big upset...

Frankly, these people and all the other fringe candidates just get in the way.
Raising the deposit hasn't deterred these time-wasters.
I suggest that before anyone can be nominated for a constituency, the verified signatures of 1000 registered electors from the constituency should be required on the nomination papers.
Can't get over this threshold, then tough.

GeoffH - You've obviously never tried to get a nomination paper completed within the few days between Notice of poll and Close of Nominations. It can't be done in advance (thanks to rolling registration) and just one of the 1,000 you propose making a mistake invalidates the whole shooting match. Think again ... and don't we all believe in a quaint notion called 'democracy'? My understanding is that even fringe parties have the same rights as 'mainstream' parties.

Nope, I do not think Neo labour will win this. I think the Tories will. All they have to do is to fight a really good straightforward local campaign, properly resourced with good party workers and resist all spin and similar bollocks and they will walk it.

I think the LibLabCON better get used to other parties standing and taking a bloomin good share of voters. Tactical voting SHMACTICAL voting, better to vote for a party that REPRESENTS your views and to hell with the result consequences than to be a useful sheep, voting for parties that if you looked carefully at their manifestos would appal you.
And the more people vote for who they want the more pressure for more a more democratic pr system where everyone has someone in power to represent their views whether they be nationalist, liberal, green or communist.
Like everything these days people want more choice, we used to have 3 channel TV aswell as 3 party politics, now we haVE SCORES of niche channels to choose from, why should politics be any different?

Incorrect: not all watermelons are green-out/red-in cf. the YELLOW Watermelon, the Orangeglo, the Moon and Stars, the Cream of Saskatchewan, and the Melitopolski. These watermelons have a variety of flesh-colourations eg. yellow, orange and white. I deduce therefore that the membership of the Green party must also include Liberals, ODM (Kenya) affiliates, and BNP supporters. Get your facts straight. Be serious.
