Fantasy Island Economics

The 40% Golden Rule was officially smashed last week. The Office of National Statistics says even the fiddled government debt level now stands at 43.1%. The Treasury's Code for Fiscal Stability allows the Government to break the Golden Rule temporarily if it specifies:
  1. the reasons for departing from the previous fiscal policy objectives and operating rules;
  2. the approach and period of time that the Government intends to take to return to the previous fiscal policy objectives and operating rules; and
  3. the fiscal policy objectives and operating rules that shall apply over this period
Well the government could honestly specify:
  1. We recklessly overspent in the good times and when things went wrong and we nationalised Northern Rock, we bust even the fiddled limits.
  2. We will probably carry on spending like a drunk sailor in port and leave the mess to George Osborne to sort out, just as Geoffrey Howe had to sort out our mess last time.
  3. We will just throw money at any electoral problem even though we seem to have run out of people and things to tax.
The penny has dropped for Denis MacShane of all people:
"the prime minister can announce that he will leave more money in the pockets of the British people by reducing their taxes. This can be targeted at the indigenous working class, furious at the incessant year-on-year council-tax increases above the rate of inflation... I do not know of a single minister who privately does not despair at the waste of money on pointless projects, publications, or legions of press officers that add no value."
Welcome to economic reality Denis. When even former Labour Ministers are calling for tax and waste reductions the tax argument is won (without any help from the Cameroons).

Meanwhile, fresh from telling the banks to lend more mortgages at lower rates in defiance of LIBOR, Gordon is today going to tell the oil companies to drop prices in defiance of supply and demand. What is the point of Gordon's market bucking fantasy rants? To get a photo op and show he is "doing something", he will subsquently in interviews say that he told the oil companies to drop prices, just like he told OPEC to stop laughing at him. There is only one thing in his pwoer which will reduce petrol pump prices.

Given that some three quarters of the petrol price is tax, perhaps reducing the tax take on petrol would be the best way to help hard pressed voters. The Golden Rule is bust, we need economic growth. We can only boost the faltering economy if, as Dennis MacShane says, we "leave more money in the pockets of the British people by reducing their taxes". You can't buck the market Gordon, but you can borrow from the bond market...

But McShane can fuck off - did he work to cut taxes while in power?

All leftists are social cripples. They cannot bear to acknowledge that the taxpayer can spend his own money wisely, efficiently and morally. We don't need twats like Blears, Brown and Jowell to mediate, thanks very much.

The government is exploding into a million pieces. Every Tom, Dick and Harriet is putting their twopenneth in and working themselves into a frenzy that will all end in tears.

If they've decided to become Capitalists they may as well throw the keys over to a party that has the stomach to make it happen. Alternatively, Brown can commit Johan Hari-kari by swerving to the left and possibly finish Labour off for good in the process.

And you're right. The Conservative Party has failed to champion the cause of low taxes. Until very recently our 'top strategists' have been fighting the 2005 election. Times have changed.

Worst chancellor since Healey? Denis was dynamite compared with McClown!

Healey picked up the flack from the Heath/Barber government who tried to print their way out of trouble. I'm not saying Healey was a success, simply he stood little chance.

McClown on the other hand inherited a golden economic scenario - no public sector borrowing, no trade gap, rising employment levels, rising tax income and state spending under control.

And over 10 years in charge completely fucked it up!!

Doesn't Gordon trust Alistair? I can't remember one single occasion when Blair insisted on holding Brown's hand at a meeting.

What is the point of the meeting anyway, the reason why fuel at the pumps is so expensive in Briton has little to do with the price of crude.

Directors of companies in the UK have a legal obligation to shareholders to maximize profits. Forcing directors to change supply side factors that reduce profitability would be illegal - that is why they are being "asked".

Directors will know better and ignore nuLabour's requests whether it's the oil supply or mortgage rates.

The real purpose of Brown's approach is to (falsely) push the public blame onto "greedy" company directors who are only performing their duty to shareholders.

They are a well and truly busted flush and waiting for things to get better...well the world doesn't move in cycles to suit this lot, so they wont survive.

Brown is a bleeding jinx...visiting the oil companies will only lead to price increases, just as visitng Arsenal lost them the Premiership. All he touches turns to ashes.

The years of tinkering and pissing about in closets he should have been locked inside with no outside access are now coming back and will cost us. Not him the gold pated pensioner who probably live for years on our taxes!

BTW Dennis Healy was the geezah who said he would make the rich squeak and he did by busting the economy, by taxing at 97%. It led to income in kind and the disastrous addiction to company perks that still havent yet fallen out of the salary structure!

AT 43% where next? Yes Chavez and Brown are both in the same world, giving away money they dont have to fund inflation, and minimise growth.

This all makes me wonder exactly what level of education Gordon and his equally scurrilous colleagues managed to achieve. $135 a barrel for oil equates to roughly 5p a litre at cost, no way does this explain the £1.25 a litre we are seeing at the pumps. Gordon going to OPEC to ask for increased production is not the answer to spiralling fuel prices, the UK has the highest fuel prices in the civilised world for one reason only ... YOU! ... We pay duty, then pay VAT on top of it ,, so we are taxed upon a tax ... incredible, only here IN THE UK could this happen without a riot, never have the words, “People Get The Government They Deserve” been more true and Cameron is not about to change anything,,, think Blair,,, think Cameron... Oh and Lib Dems ,, biggest joke ever, I don’t even want to go there. A total change out is the only way forward.

I would love to be an Oilco exec at the meeting.

"You want what?"
"Hahahahahaahhahah".
"We suggest that since 75% of the price is tax that a better way of lowering the price exists, so to put it bluntly, fuck off".

Oh, and I see Elsby's off on one again. Prat.

I saw some stats recently that showed that more oil was mined than used last month. Plus are not the Americans building stockpiles? And I am not at all sure that the East has 'decoupled' from the West, if we go into recession so will they, and the oil price will go down. So perhaps this current price level is as much speculator driven as anything. But very usefully it has exposed Browns tax and spend policy failure. What a complete twat.

It's even worse than that sitondefence. It's not just the VAT levied at the pumps on both fuel tax and fuel.

Why don't you put up an e-petition on the 10 Downing St web-site:

"We, the undersigned ciizens of Great Britain have no confidence in Gordon Brown as Prime Minister"

If you had a permanent link to the site and advised bloggers that you can autofill your name, email address and postcode and, instead of tediously giving your address, just input one numeric character in the address panel. It's as simple as that to vote.

Then we can have the acid test - will we all step up and vote.

It's very geekish, Milliband -type stuff.

But what if it catches on?

It'll be interesting to see how long before they start to censor it - or will we all start to get letters from HMRC?

PS There's no point adding " because he's a lying, ugly, strangely weird, cunt, a closet knob jockey, turd-burgling incompetent, scottish shithouse son of the manse and therefore psychologically unfit to do any thing other than sit in a room masturbating" because the thought police will delete it.

You say the penny has dropped with MacShane ??? - and is that supposed to give some sort of reverse psychology that the real Labour people know how to run a government ? Come off it man, they are the clowns who got us into the mess to start with and they're at it again - TAX and SPEND is what they do and that's all they're good for.

My opinion is who the fuck is bothered anymore what Labour think !? They've had their chances and they've broken their promises and they've lied and fiddled and stuffed themselves and us for long enough. No amount of talk or spin will resurrect the diddly squat party now.

As for Cameron he has my vote but he'd better start getting his finger out on the spending and taxes quick, also Europe which soaks away our lifeblood and stuffs this place full of claptrap and bureaucracy.

I want for one thing, the FSA do do a big one. They are like the fcuking Gestapo and costing industry £30 billion. In addition, I want an end to the Euro-politics - This is my country and I want my government to act for me so sack every MEP because they don't act for me or anyone else for that matter.

Deliver us from evil !

Oh, and reduce fuel duty and raise a third level of tax banding for the rich - 30% will do for now, along with the non-dom bastards and their foreign companies which pay fuck all to our country but soak away our lifeblood also.

First thing we need once Labour is out of office is a public scaffold and MacShane can either join the queue of traitors or he can frig off out of here along with the 4 million immigrants eating all our jobs, forcing house prices to increase and saturating our public services.

Cut spending yes, certainly, I.D. cards for one but there's 8,500 Quango's to look at too and lots more which I'm too sick and tired of repeating.

How stupid does Brown think we are? [Don't answer that].

The UK already has the lowest wholesale (excl. tax) oil prices in Western Europe because of the North Sea (and probably some downward price pressure because we also have the highest tax). Increasing UK output will make little difference because extra production will just mean it is sold elewhere for more. Brown could ask the oilcos to divert oil from the higher priced European markets to the lower priced UK market (in which case they could be expected to tell him to take the "sex and travel" option mentioned above).

They could quite rightly tell him that the biggest price component is in his control. If adding duty to the cost of petrol to make if cost 80p a litre was such a good idea a few years back, why isn't 80p a litre such a good idea any more? Same price should be the same disincentive. If £1.25 is acceptable now, why didn't he put duty up years ago. Answer, because it isn't really a disincentive, the demand is very inelastic. It has always been just another tax.

The other point on oil which arises from someone else's comment on the oil companies preferring to use the stuff for more expensive products is why don't we stop using the fucking stuff.

Nuclear is the way to go and is incredibly safe. Even the officers of the Royal Navy can't produce an accident with it and God knows they've fucked up everything else the public buys them.

If we ploughed back all the oil tax into research and infrastructure development and gave the oil companies sufficient incentive on a carrot and stick basis we could make hydrogen viable in 5 years and tell the camel jockeys and the haggis eating sheep shaggers in Scotland to fuck off back to the dark ages.

The beauty of the internet, blogs and public participation.

This telegraph article so clearly shows how things are developing for the better.

In the past a person could point to an old article they wrote and say whatever they like about how it was received at the time.

This clearly sets in stone the contemporary public reception of the article - and the author will never be able to use it in an campaiging of revisionism he may have in mind for the future.

Now we can and will learn from the past to a level never before imagined - Labours reputation can never, ever, recover. Duplicity will be clearly visible - all politicians take note.

He has longed, yearned, schemed for this job for over 10 years and now it is destroying him and there is nothing he can do to stop it. Its enough to make anyone go mad.

In 10 years time he will be seen as the Macbeth PM. Its a tragedy - for him and for us.

Firstly there are no working classes in Stoke, you cunt, only benefit classes, and what business do they have driving in the first place? As far as the real working classes go, down in the tax-paying South, it seems that your version of Elsbynomics is scarcely credited - some even believe that the great grey greasy snot-gobbling fairy with the degree in the history of Labour party fuck-ups, and his greed for tax, might have something to do with it.

Elsby, you illiterate turd, just as you attempted to turn "cunt" into a verb in a previous oeuvre, now you want to do the same with "lesson"?
I would have thought that you would have been lessoned by now having been pissed on by a BNP chick that you are totally cunted.

I love to daydream - it relaxes me.

At the moment my favourite daydream is of Gordon knocking on the door to OPEC's offices and being refused entry - then standing around for twenty minutes unsure what to do and then abandoning his quest and pissing off in his Jag/Range Rover convoy.

Occasionally, I modify things by actually having him ejected from the offices by OPEC security officers and dumped on the pavement outside in the full glare of the worlds media.

My second favourite daydream involves my favourite MPILFs Caroline Flint and Lynne Featherstone getting aquainted with some baby oil and fruit jelly but Im not going to tell you about that one.

85M barrels of oil per day is required and 85M+ barrels is pumped and delivered.

No matter how much you thick Tories bang on about Gordon, petrol or food prices, the culprits are Tory shysters speculating in hedge funds.

You are totally stupid, you are totally thick and you are total cunts.

It bothers me little that you are Tory, thick and cunts, all I wish to do is write it and smile.

Guido, you fucking Tory wanker!

I can't wait to be an MP cos I'll fucking murder that bunch of twats on the other side.

Given that you couldn't even get elected as a local councillor you'll wait a long time.

World's worst election leaflet wasn't it?

Tricky questions:

Did Gary Elsby shag his subnormal sister and produce thick as thieves?

Or did thick as thieves shag his subnormal sister and produce Gary Elsby?

Gary Elsby - you provide an interesting insight into the mind of a would-be Labour politician (or should that be fanatic?). You have confirmed something I have long suspected. Thank you.

Your mental state goes a long way to explaining the deranged, demented, arrogant and vindictive abuses of power exercised by our New Labour government.

If you are proud of that outburst you really do need medical help.

I read your campaign leaflet too. Poorly articulated puerile rubbish. You might be smiling but your leaflet reveals you will always be intellectually and grammatically challenged - as well as quite possibly mentally ill..

Dear Tory Boys Never etc. @ 1.24

You are so economically illiterate that one doesn't no where to begin.

Do you want to drive business away from the City? This would be heavy handed regulation of a kind that London does not do. New Labour had the good sense not to tinker with the golden egg laying goose.

How would you define a hedge fund and determine if a bank was lending to it rather than just carring out normal lending? When is an oil trader a hedge fund?

Gary Elsby:

Are you for real?

I 'read' (tried to comprehend) your election leaflet . You're illiterate. Not only that, you clearly live in a fantasy world.

You appear to be under the misapprehension that your opinions are of value to other people. However, when confronted with indifference/alternative views you become highly abusive - especially towards 'tory cunts'.

What possibly makes you think that anybody would vote for you? They didn't in the local elections and definitely wouldn't in a General Election - I doubt you could get elected to the PTA (probably for the best, as you remind me of a certain Mr Hamilton).

Seriously, Gary, get some professional help.

I didn't suggest the regulation be done by London alone (and we probably couldn't even if we wanted to - but that is another story), that would be totally pointless - the whole world is suffering from the same problem. All types of institution are already defined in Basel/BIS regulations - so it shouldn't be too difficult to define hedge funds or speculative traders (my guess is that the regulators have probably thought about this in some detail already - so probably have a nice definition ready and waiting for when the politicians have the necessary gumption). They would probably look at the degree of leverage that they have for starters - and if a bank is lending to a hedge fund (or an oil trader for that matter) without knowing the degree of leverage they hold then they deserve all the arbitrary regulation that can be thrown at them.

So how would you handle speculation in commodity prices, which is actually causing real grief to real people especially in the 3rd World - more old Tory boom and bust - just trust in the unregulated markets (and blame supply and demand) and hope that you can make a few illgotten gains on your own account.

Guido Fawkes said...

Speculators can't distort a market for ever.

It is an old saying that for every buyer there is a seller. Still true.

Do you really think the Swiss, Chinese, Bahamians or Yanks would go along with your socialised financial markets? No. So forget it.

High Finance Capitalism is the only game in town. Marx said it would be a prelude to socialism, don't count on it.

How would you handle high commodity prices - price caps? Don't work do they? Rising demand, signaled by rising prices, should bring forth increased supply.

Bollocks, Guido!

Why do you spend any time nailing Brown and Labour, when you know that they have fuck all to do with fuel speculation.

Apologise you cur!
