Worry & Hurry for May 22 By-Election
The unseemly rush to have the Crewe & Nantwich by-election can only mean one thing - Labour are worried. Guido can't recall an election being called before the body was buried before.
They obviously hope to prevent the opposition organising themselves and exploit the warm goodwill that still lingers from Gwyneth Dunwoody. The selection takes place Friday morning with the candidate to be announced Saturday night.
It suggests that they hope to get all the bad news out of the way before the summer. In time no doubt for yet another Brown re-launch...
UPDATE : Iain Dale speculates as to why Fraser Kemp won't be performing his usual by-election role.

These broon "relaunches" are more regular than buses and even if you miss one another comes along in 5 mins.
If NASA could relaunch the shuttle this quickly there would be hotels on the moon.
not much respect for her many years service !!!
she had an 8000 majority on a 60% turnout , so well thought of .
gordon potential re launch : i have already seen the speech for friday "it has been a difficult time for us , but we are in politics for the british people and we have learned our lesson together we are stronger"
if the british public fall for this meaningless shite they deserve to become a worthless crap hole nation.
If I were selected as the Labour candidate my very first act would be to beg Jonah McBean to resurrect the tradition that Party Leaders do not visit by-election campaigns.
Thankfully, I am most unlikely to be in that unfortunate position.
Aren't these shares in a blind trust?
If so, then the principle of a blind trust is that he has no say in the investments; indeed he is not supposed to know what investments are held (the trustees may have decided to sell these shares months ago).
If they are not in a blind trust, then why is there not a conflict of interest?
This shows up a major problem with a blind trust - it is a farce where a Minister has a large shareholding in a company. With normal investments it is simple for a trustee to buy and sell (just like a Unit Trust, where most of us don't actually know what companies we have invested in). But where you've got a large shareholding, that's impractical.
No respect for the dead, no respect for the living. Do whatever it takes to get elected. This is total politics, this is New Labour.
Could New Labour sink any lower?
Let's hope so!
Didn't they move the writ for Ealing Southall last year before the deceased MP was buried?
Becoming a habit.
Tamsin Dunwoody Gwyneth's daughter expected to stand,
just what we need another fucking incestrious silver spoon Labour dynasty! what happend to 1940s working class labour where if you work hard you can get on?
what about poor joe blocks who has worn his legs to stumps for the party? joe bloggs open your mouth the heiress benn and dunwoody would like to take a shit.
Labour cunts.

But it is already...
Or haven't you noticed?
"...if the british public fall for this meaningless shite they deserve to become a worthless crap hole nation..."
I would love to stand for Labour on an honest slogan " Under us the rich get seriously richer and fuck the working class" , not sure about Crewe but the card carrying loyalists would still come out to vote for me in Sunderland or St Helens. If only I'd been a student activist.. the world could have been my oyster.
re anon 11:15
your right i was dining on a past mental meal , it has become a worthless crap hole .
thankyou nu labour

Where did you get yours? I got this straight from Milliband.
"The results are as expected for a party in the mid term, but I will continue to press on with the same tired, unworkable and failed ideas that got us all into this hole in the first place."
Since 2000, Livingstone has paid his partner Emma Beal at total of £800,000 to be his office manager.
When she was originally hired from a lowly job on the ES magazine in 2000,
Livingstone paid her over £96k to be his 'office manager' despite him also
hiring his long standing female secretary.
Funny that.
Tamsin was a joke in the assembly. She was hammered in the last assembly elction by apretty poor Tory candidate. She will be murdered in any by election. Her only connection to Crewe is that she might have caught the train there once.
Perhaps Labour spin-meisters could keep her body on ice a bit longer, so that the respectful folk of Crewe could go straight from her funeral to the voting booths. Or maybe people could vote at a specially installed polling station at her wake...
This rush for a by election looks bad. You would think they would have some respect for the dead. When ever Gordon tries to save embarrassment he just makes things much much worse. The chap is a genius at it. At the moment we don’t need a opposition party when Gordon is doing such a fine job himself. We have a flawed PM no doubt about it.

They wouldn't do that!
No their style is to bus in 10,000 eastern Europeans into the mariginals, and give certain groups the ability to rig the postal vote.
Mugabwe would be so proud of labour, now we just need the death camps as the cherry on the cake.
eg political uprising/unrest gets the death penalty under the EU constitution(read the footnotes).

No. They waited until the day after the funeral.
Piara Khabra's funeral was on June 28th 2007. The writ for the by-election was moved on June 28th.
Brown admits 'mistakes' over tax. Must be hoax.
Oops. Piara Khabra's funeral was on June 27th 2007.
I am not sure I have heard of too many funerals being held 35 days after the death.
In any event, what has the funeal of the last MP got to do with the election of the next one. Gwynneth Dunwoody is dead. Get over it. The seat is vacant. Dunwoody doesn't own the seat, and neither does her daughter or New Labour.
There's some speculation on LabourHome that Brown will bring his old boyfriend, Nick Brown, back on board in the forthcoming cabinet reshuffle.
Now all they need is that other old queen, Chris Smith, and the three of them could treat the rest of the cabinet to a live display of roasting.
I hear Gordo likes being in the middle of a bit of DP.
Meanwhile, the snotgobbler continues to delay Jack McConnell's expected peerage, while McConnell himself seems reluctant to take up his overseas posting in Malawi. Why? Because it would mean a by-election in the Scottish Parliament, in what was formerly rock-solid Labour Lanarkshire. With the SNP doing well, Brown is terrified of the SNP winning such a by-electionand showing how soft even the core Labour vote is. This by-election has been delayed for almost a year now.
