The British Legion have launched a campaign* - the issue they want to promote to the public and politicians is the injustice of a situation where the families of soldiers who die heroically do not receive financial aid for legal representation in Court. When convicted child molesters die in custody, their families get legal aid. Why should soldier's families be treated worse?

The MoD is doing everything it can to frustrate legal investigations by coroners, suppress publicity and withhold compensation. The power to grant public funding for representation at an inquest lies only with the Lord Chancellor, Jack Straw. In the case of prisoners who die in custody the funding is automatic, Service families need to apply to the Lord Chancellor for their case to be classed as “exceptional” and they must meet financial criteria. Is that the right way round?

*Full disclosure: the British Legion are advertising their campaign on Guido. An advert is not the same as an endorsement - but Guido is more than happy in this case to support their campaign.

If you are reading this from work, you are fortunate to be able to slack off a bit, to feel secure in your work and to know that if you fail in your professional and managerial responsibilities little worse than a short period of unemployment beckons.

If you have time to read this blog, go NOW to the website and fill out a direct debit for 10, 20, 50 quid a month. You know you can afford it. You know you always promise yourself to give more to charity. Do It NOW.

This has been a public service posting on behalf of those who put their lives at risk because the government we elect demands it (and even sometimes to protect us).

Do. It. NOW.

Prisoners and their families are important state clients (i.e. they assault taxpayers and not the body of state itself, and thereafter create employment and purpose for civil servants), and are thus to be shielded by the various organs of government; the Armed Forces are expendable cannon-fodder who mainly run themselves, and therefore offer relatively little potential in the way of domestic departmental empire building and the scope for largesse.

Might that disparity be one reason for the difference in approach?

Perhaps they're saving the cash for when every Iraqi and Afghan wounded along the way realises he can get £2m for his injuries if he claims in the UK?

A clear demonstation of the total contempt the MOD and its political masters has for British Soldiers.

British Soldiers should wake up and take note, vote with their feet, and, just ask themselves how many sons and daughters of precious british politicians that support this illegal war are serving in the middle east right now, I bet its none!

This government despises law-abiding citizens. Prisoner organisations on the other hand are swamped with taxpayer money and human rights.

Old-Tyke said...

It's obviously wrong Guido, and well done to you for supporting the campaign. The Labour Party have never been fond of the Armed Forces but Iraq and Afghanistan have shown us their true colours - they are forced to operate on a shoestring by the MOD and Treasury; military rehabilitation centres are sold off; funeral corteges held up in traffic because of lack of an escort; their equipment is often outdated and doesn't work as it should (ie shoot) and, to cap it all, if they're wounded they end up in an NHS hospital to be abused by any passerby. For families to have to appeal to the Lord Chancellor - that Marxist, Straw - is beyond the pale. Time for a change of government (but you know that already don't you?).

Lets see - willing to risk their lives, suffer hardship in backwater hell holes, be forced to to make do with second rate equipment in the field and slum housing back home and all for a yearly salary smaller than MPs kitchen allowance ... and a couple of soul crushing of pointless wars - And yet the forces still maintain a quite dignity.

Guess thats not the kind of Britishness Mcboon is looking for.

Good thing for us NuLabour haven't read the chapter in the dictators handbook about looking after your armed forces.

Sorry Guido, I should have made clear that on the link to my name you need to scroll down a wee bit to see nuggets about Milliband in bed with Straw and ignore the hyperbole and gory colours of the website.
Praguetory @ 5.13pm- you're right it does seem to be an increasingly popular option at least amongst those who bother to email online media - I don't think that makes enough for a military coup though - and anyway, their guns don't work.

Because the left HATE Britain.

Soldiers defend Britain.
Criminals attack it.

The (new) left support and lavish money on criminals and abandon Soldiers.

It sounds tinfoil, but I think the "post-democratic" lot really do want to destroy our country. Their actions only make sense from this perspective.

"The (new) left support and lavish money on criminals and abandon Soldiers."

Actually they're lavishing support on the families of dead criminals, who haven't done anything wrong themselves.

While it's wrong that soldiers' families don't get legal aid for such cases, it's a bit harsh to attack the innocent parents, spouses and children of guilty people who die in dubious circumstances.

but i will say one thing - are the conservatives willing to come out with it and PLEDGE proper investment in the armed forces..?

The only person trying to get involved was nick clegg who tried to jump on the Ghurka case

I want PROPER commitments from the conservatives - people forget that they were'nt overly kind to the army in the past or people who they can generally count on for support (farmers - etc)

Can we get back in the general dircetion of the original thread for a minute?

Whilst not wishing to detract from the Legion thread, there is a No 10Petition running:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to instruct the Ministry of Defence and Chief Constables to provide official escorts for the bodies of repatriated British servicemmen"

Detail:
"The bodies of British servicemen and women killed overseas are flown to RAF Lyneham.

The hearses carrying the bodies receive no special escort once they leave the county of Wiltshire, normally bound for the mortuary at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

It is an insult to these brave people and their families that their hearses should travel un-escorted on their journey through the country that these men and women served and died for.

The signatories to this petition request that the Ministry of Defence, in co-ordination with local Chief Constables, arrange for a formal escort for the bodies of all those Servicemen and women, unless the next-of-kin request otherwise."

This is a compare and contrast on the way Canada and the UK welcome their hereos home:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=559303&in_page_id=1770

Horrible, horrible, horrible, - but remember, we’re dealing with the ‘Uman ‘Roights Industry, - and a mostly insipid gang of half-wits in the House of Babble.

And that takes us right into Big Money, EU Money, and all the kudos associated with ‘saving’ the ‘oppressed’ poor and . . . . blah blah blah . . .

But seems like there’s a big prob over human rights and basic decency for the Forces and their families . . . eh?

WHY can’t people in this land wake up . . ?

Has something been put in the water . . . . ?

Ah-Ha . . . ! is that why the House of Babble has to have BOTTLED water??!!

PS – are UK lawyers really trolling in those God Forsaken lands looking for people that might have been injured etc by our lads so a case can be brought to UK courts to sue the Govt / MOD etc? . . for lots of dosh?

Koba @7:20 "How do we go about getting a re-count of the 2005 general election?"

Since the 2005 general election I have found very few people who admit to voting for the nuLieBore regime. They have a lot of previous form on fiddling figures and why should an election result be any different? Sadly, these days with this evil government, electoral fraud is not as far fetched as it should be.

Many years ago I had a dream that B’Liar was being lead away from 10 Downing Street in handcuffs and put in a police car. It is a shame that it never came true while he was PM, but there is always hope.

I believe that the lot of them should face the traditional fate of traitors to be hung, drawn and quartered. It should be done in Parliament Square and shown on prime-time television. The overseas pay-per-view rights would bring in a fortune. I would pay serous money to see it live though. A recording should be shown to MP’s at the opening of every parliament.

My elder son is trying to get into HM Armed Forces. Why?

After being utterly failed by the State "education" system, it is about the only decent career available to anyone without at least five GCSEs at grade C or above.

Oh, I should add that being introduced to Reach for The Sky and similar British WWII films from the age of five might have something to do with it.

So in my son's case 11 years of ZaNuLab/NUT Cultural Marxist indoctrination have signally failed!

the last surviving strength of the british army (the regimental system) has been almost fatally wounded

The quality of people already in the Army is what keeps it going and trying to keep up the old standards in itself is under attack from the gov/mod

by the way - THERE ARE MORE CIVIL SERVANTS (110,000 +) WORKING FOR THE MOD THEN THERE ARE SOLDIERS IN THE ENTIRE ARMY (96,000)

Yeah, so the FAMILIES who receive the legal aid haven't done anything wrong. The CRIMINALS have done something wrong but as they're dead they're unlikely to make any money out of the situation.

More ways for you and the Family to Show support to British Troops.
Please consider passing on the Link.

Show you Support out Troops by sending them Anonymous 'Suprise Supplies' ( Post Free )

http://iaindale.blogspot.com/2007/12/send-parcel-to-our-boysgirls-in-itaq.html

One of the main elements of this scheme is to provide a bit of variety. Therefore if you can, use your imagination to the full and think of a cross between Christmas stockings and tuck boxes and you will be on the right track. It is very hot in Afghanistan so please do not send things that melt such as chocolate. Alcohol (and pornography!) are forbidden but this still leaves plenty of goodies such as:

Biscuits, cake - homemade wonderful but bought wonderful too – but think long life like fruitcake, gingerbread or malt loaf. Anything in a tube, vacuum pack or tin to perk up their rather basic rations is great - toffee sauce, (M&S does a good range of savoury and sweet sauces in tubes) condensed milk, salsa dip and cheese straws, cream cheese, fish paste, chutneys, chorizo sausage, dried fruit and nuts, mint imperials, chewing gum and everyone loves Jelly Babies.

Soduko books and magazines – Nuts, Zoo and FHM we are reliably informed are the most popular but also the Week for current affairs and any kind of magazine will be very welcome, the more varied the better as there is lots of time for reading and magazines get swapped and shared around.

Candles (for illumination, not scent), lip salve, moisturiser, medicated talc, deodorant, toothpaste and cotton socks (M&S do a great range of cotton socks that are v. popular – black and olive green are good colours). They also have to drink vast quantities of water so any powder flavourings in a package like Berocca, Vitamin C sachets etc. would be both light and immensely appreciated. Finally old fashioned pick ‘n mix sweets are particularly recommended but please keep the contents within £10 for the sake of equality.

Some Adresses to send to

Afghanistan A British Soldier C/O Capt P Williams MC SO3 ISTAR HQ 52 Infantry Brigade BFPO 715 Op Herrick 7

Iraq A British Soldier C/O CSM Gazzard OMLT 1 2 YORKS Camp Shorabak Op Herrick BFPO 792

Please DO NOT include Senders address as the Organisers do not wish the Troops to be distracted by feeling obliged to Write Thank you Notes.
