Rhodri Morgan was another Old Labour politician who (eventually)triumphed over the New Labour machine when they wouldn't let him run for First Minister. Last year, he too tried to relive past triumphs by running against the national party. The result was the worst result for Welsh Labour since 1918 and a fall in the Labour vote in Wales three times as big as in Scotland. So something tells me the strategy won't work...

This is a very silly strategy.

Actually in reply to Shotgun; Galloway and Livingstone are unfortunately similar.
Livingstone came to power by playing off the Irish vote, now he uses the Muslim and other disgruntled minority ethnic groups. He has always played the minority, relying on the fact that while they may be a minority of the total electorate, they will be far more likely to vote at all than the majority electorate. This is where Mr Johnson will need to work his hardest.

given that this time he wasnt strolling up to the podium with a time sensative crisis (just a general one) i was struck not by just how boring it was , but how scripted it was like he had been installed with peter carter version 2 upgrade.

however the content of gordons answers was just scary 42 day notices will be brought about by home sec and put before parliment , so if he whips it they go to detention above the 28 days already allowed .

Labour MPs angry at Brown speech. Gordon Brown's meeting with the Parliamentary Labour Party last night went even more badly than the Mole first thought [see this morning's first report below].
I have since been told there was real anger among some Labour MPs at the Prime Minister's answers during the Q&A section after his speech about the increase of taxation on the low paid, and the closure of post offices.
"People were queuing up to complain to me about it," said one minister. "If Boris Johnson wins the mayoral election, it will be open warfare, like it was in the 1980s."
Ken can't get it into his thick head that he's been dumped. No-one care any more what he says or does or thinks. There's nothing he can do to increase his vote beyond the sleazy minority who've received handouts from the gigantic community charge payments that have been extorted from the rest of us. We don't want the London skyline destroyed. We don't want London ethnically cleansed. If we want to know about African, Pakistani, Indian or any other culture we'd rather use the money for a holiday in Africa, Pakistan or India than pay through the nose for some tacky monoethnic festival in London.

Very strange move on Ken's behalf.
Alienating the Labour Government does not just lose their support. It encourages them to be actively hostile. From Brown's perspective the ongoing revelations about Livingstone's cronies are adding to his problems so he's every reason to want him gone. Even a narrow Livingstone win could encourage talk about electoral fraud. Conversely losing London to the Tories with a high profile Tory Mayor in office will reflect poorly on the Government's prospects in a General Election. So for Brown the issue is balanced. It's a no-win situation either way. Why push Brown towards an anti position?
It has been interesting to see how Ken has operated recently. He gave a pro-gay interview to the Independent where he commented that inviting Muslim fundamentalists to London was a mistake. Does he really believe this? I very much doubt it. He probably realises that he is losing the gay vote due to Peter Tatchell denouncing his pro-Islamic policies. He also realises that very few fundementalist Muslims are going to read the Independent. I wonder if Ken has made totally contradictory statements to the Muslim community? I strongly suspect he has.
In Ken's case it seems to me that he is living proof that politics is showbusiness for ugly people. By the time he has promised to be all things to all minorities there is little chance of him exercising any real power at all, even if being Mayor of London actually conferred any power. Ken is merely a political personality.
The Labour party always know when to appeal to the left of the party.
I note even Gordon Brown was sporting a red tie at his press conference yesterday. There was a time when he would not where any other colour... but then he started to see the leadership looming and the red tie was put away.

Yes, I was suprised to see this reported as a gaffe by Boulton and Co on Sky News. Ken romped home as an independent candidate first time round. This didn't seem like a gaffe at all but a like a reminder that he maybe Labour's candidate, but he's not "one of them". Clever, really. Unless he happens to sufficiently alienate enough New Labour voters (there must still be some!) and it backfires.

What Livingstone is saying is clearly not true.
He did not grind New Labour into the ground as they currently hold the vast majority if seats in London and the country. They have done so in two elections since 2000. He rejoined the Labour Party after his election, so obviously cant hate them as much as he claims he does.
The man does not know what telling the truth is. He has been following a New Labour agenda since coming to office, just simply in an even more divisive and criminal manner.
Note he does not give any details as to what exactly is the difference between a New Labour policy and a Ken Livingstone one.
