Labour Cynically Exploit Tributes to Gwyneth for Data Mining

The readiness of New Labour to cynically exploit the goodwill of Gwyneth Dunwoody's constituents (where she had a significant following) hit a low with the hasty announcement that Labour will rush the election in record time. Now they have been caught milking tributes for partisan advantage.

The official local party website invites you to leave a tribute to her - nothing wrong with that. Guido cynically wondered why the online tribute form asks not only for your name, but your house number, postcode and email address? It seems Guido was right to be cynical...

Before she is in the ground they are electioneering. If anyone from Labour claims that it is just an innocent opportunity to leave a tribute to the much-loved former MP they are being less than honest. A close study of the data capture process reveals that it includes a sophisticated software routine designed to look-up and verify the postcode and collect the data for Labour HQ in London. This is not a spontaneous local initiative - it was designed by Tangent Labs, the Labour Party's national e-campaigns software contractors. Don't forget to include this work in your election expenses chaps....

The data will no doubt be used to help with e-campaigning in what could be a closely fought battle. This by-election will be a prototype for General Election e-campaigning strategies...

So why not fill out some vaguely correct but completely erroneous data?

'Son of the Manse'? I think not.

Sickening but not surprising. A new low for New Labour.

This will be so that if they do not vote as they should the boys will go round and tear down their huts and set fire to their crops.

Reminds me of a joke doing the rounds when I lived in the good ol' USA. The joke was about attorneys, but those slimy fuckpigs are on par with 'ethical' Nu Labour. So (drum roll) "What's the difference between a whore and Nu Labour? A whore stops fucking you when you are dead."

Dah dah, old Gwny's family must be so proud of the party she worked so hard for eh?

Mind you, isn't Tangent Labs the company that recently gave Nulab's website homepage 'excellance' (sic)?

I'm reminded of Cameron's words about the government shortly after the election that never was: "Never have the British public been treated with such cynicism."

This Labour government has no decency and no shame.

I think this shows excellent financial foresight by Labour they must surely be responsibly selling the private details to that wonderful Rev Qwazi Abacha who emails me frequently with interesting financial opportunites.

Well you could just fill in Gordon's postcode as per usual, or you could go for Tangent Labs.

Yeah, only his doesn't just ask for your name & address, it wants all your bank account & credit card details as well...

"...Don't forget to include this work in your election expenses chaps...."

Except that it was done before the date of the election writ, so it doesn't need to be reported.

Cynical exploitation? So what? Par for the course with NuLab.

Sign the condolence book at the local paper, which doesn't get to NuLab.

It took me 10 minutes and a cup of coffee to settle down and understand what I feel about this.I was reminded about the old Shire Horse 'Boxer' in Animal Farm.Gave its whole life in selfless service and was used at the end in the most base way. This is on a par with that imo.She worked her whole life for something she obviously passionately loved and believed in,only to be used by people who have no understanding of passion and commitment, only of money and cynicim.I haven't been this angry for a while

Could this undecent haste be so as to remove the possibility of Ken Livingstone applying for the seat?

About Ken Livingdeath RIP, has anybody seen any news footage of him canvassing among white voters at all during this campaign? From yesterday's news I thought he was running for Mayor of Dacca.

THE TROUBLE WITH MR. BEAN

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has seen his initial popularity sink amid a series of gaffes. Now UK voters are set to punish the Mr. Bean of British politics in local elections -- and the knives are also being sharpened within Brown's Labour Party ...

This is indeed nauseating

However it offers an enticing opportunity

I have submitted a tribute in good faith. I will await the inevitable response. I will then immediately invoke the Data Protection Act right of access to personal data (Section 7), the right for personal data not to be processed lf likely to cause damage or distress, and the right for personal data not to be processed for direct marketing (Section 11).

If enough of us do this we could swamp their system and if we keep getting communications beyond a reasonable period we can complain to the Data Protection Commissioner and Tribunal. Any further thoughts on how to challenge this cack-handed and cynical data trawl to cause the maximum damage?

I bet in the T&Cs it says by clicking here you agree for your postal vote to be administered from Labour HQ.

The constituency is not so much 'Crewe and Nantwich' as 'Crewe versus Nantwich. If Nantwich wins Labour are toast.

I thought it was advisable not to give out your name and address details due to risk of identity theft. However on second thoughts this is probably the reason ZanuLabour want every detail they can get, what odds turning up at the polling booth in future elections to discover you've already voted?

As a slogan, "nulab, new low", has a certain ring to it.

My family and I knew Mrs. Dunwoody. While I was in Crewe last weekend I signed the condolence book. I can't tell you how shocked and angry I am to read this.

I didn't have a high regard for New Labour to begin with - they're certainly not the party my father served for many years. But this is an abomination and an insult to her memory: it is exactly the kind of petty manipulation of people's goodwill that she particularly hated.

With all due regard to the Dunwoody family, I hope Labour is wiped off the map in the by-election after pulling a stunt like this.

Labour - more than just the scum of their parts.

It may well be 'A new low for New Labour' come the local election results. Fingers crossed.

"nulab, new low"

"Labour - more than just the scum of their parts"

These are far too good waste; there must be some way to spread them far and wide.

Could be interesting. Imagine if they come to the conclusion that that garnering the sympathy vote is worthwhile? They could start bumping off hordes of their own MPs to encourage people to vote Labour again...

You describe it as the "local" website.

In fact, it is a bright and breezy new website which replaced the previous website ... just after Gwyneth's death.

The fact that it lists Acton and Audlem as "served" by local Labour points to it having been created well away from the area.

[The villages of Acton and Audlem are both in Eddisbury constituency. There are three parishes - two of them very small - which are within the district wards of Acton and Audlem, and in Crewe & Nantwich constituency until the next GE when they too move to Eddisbury. But of course this would be lost on external web-creators]

As for using tributes to garner voter i.d. ?

Despicable.

I can't help thinking that Gwyneth (like the rest of her family) would have approved.

While Dunwoody seems to have been a decent enough old trout - at any rate for a socialist - she showed alarming misjudgment in belonging to the wretched shower in the first place. I hope her eyes have now been opened.

I sincerely hope they haven't, mate! That won't give much of an impression of resting in peace, will it?
