Councillor Watson Claims £3,723 Per Meeting
Joanne Watson, a member of the Watson Family Clan, is a councillor in Sandwell. In the 2006-2007 municipal year she has managed to claim £14,894.20 in allowances for attending a total of 4 meetings. That is an incredible average of £3,723 per meeting.
According to official attendance records obtained by Guido, she has as Vice-Chair of the "Policy and Performance Scrutiny Panel" managed to attend in this municipal year 1 meeting out of the 4 held by that panel. She attended none of the six meetings of the Health and Older People Scrutiny Panel of which she is a member. She attended 1 meeting out of the 5 held by the West Bromwich Town Committee, 2 out of the 7 full Council meetings and none of the meetings of the Education Staffing Committee. A grand total of 4 recorded meetings attended last year.She also works for Pat McFadden MP and Michael Cashman MEP, so the taxpayer chips in a bit more there in addition to the payments she gets from the Labour Party and Amicus.
Is she the most overpaid local council fat cat? Are all the Watsons getting fat off the backs of struggling taxpayers?
UPDATE : Some suggestion in the comments that a massive 7 meetings were attended in the relevant year which would make it a mere £2127.74 per meeting. McKinsey charge less than that...

Labour has overseen the creation of a "new poor" with two-parent families and white schoolboys from deprived backgrounds among those faring the worst, an authoritative study suggests.
The "wealth and equality" report by the Office for National Statistics shows that despite Gordon Brown's promises of a better and more just society, many Britons are no better off and some are worse off than when Labour swept to office in 1997.
White teenage boys from poor backgrounds are struggling at school while black teenagers are doing much better, it says.
The report - which says the income gap between rich and poor remains the same as it was 10 years ago - makes embarrassing reading for Mr Brown, whose first speech in office promised to "fulfil the potential and realise the talents of all our people". The Government's critics say it shows that the "New Labour experiment" has been a total failure.
The findings come after the charity CARE found that the majority of children now classed as poor came from two-parent homes. It said three out of four ordinary families would be better off living apart than sharing a home under Labour's benefits system because tax credits and benefits increasingly favoured single mothers. A typical couple on a low or middle income would be £69 a week better off if they lived apart.

True story:
I last visited a council office last year to inspect a local planning application and witnessed a TEA-LADY, complete with apron and weight problem, pushing round a trolley of beverages and buns, dispensing chat and free drinks. I thought I had slipped back through time to 1960.
The solution to local government:
1. Schools: easy - transferable vouchers. Fuck the NUT. (BTW, perhaps the armed forces could pop into schools when the NUT have their extra holiday. Kids would learn more about the world, get fit, enjoy themselves and learn how to shoot bad people.)
2. Roads: centrally funded by diverting all road/fuel taxes where they should go.
3. Health & Social care: see 1.
4. Everything else: Sack the tea lady. What else is left?

Well as an ardent reader and contributor to this blog, I really thought I had read it all !.... you really couldn’t make this stuff up. No wonder Robert Mugabe has severed links with the UK, fear of being seen to be associated to the trolls who inhabit our totally corrupt political system.
Assuming that it is impossible to incur costs of £14,894.20 in order to attend just four local council meetings. Then either you have made a mistake Guido or Joanne Watson has committed a serious fraud. Can you provide links?
Do Councllors have to provide receipts etc. for the claims they make? If so I would love to see Joanne Watson's receipts. Can anyone get her local newspaper on the case? If this claim about her claims are true then even I am staggered.

I am not defending any of the councillors expenses or attendance record, just pointing out that Guido's figures are innaccurate, after all she attended a massive 7 out of 26 meetings in 2006-7, so that's only just over £2100 per meeting.
And she did have a 100% attendance at the Education Staffing Commitee (of which she was chair and probably therefore had greater expenses) but this is beacuse they held NO meetings.

our council has just announced a deficiet and is contemplating selling off the land assetts to make up , they have just taken on some more non jobs "community systems liason officer" and are now telling the council workers that they will have to make service cuts . they are now charging for removing rubbish if you call , which used to be free, to discourage fly tipping.

You are missing a BIG point here.
She has claimed 14,894.20 + in expenses in just one year. So therefore the money has been spent on these expenses. So now therefore should not exist in any of her bank accounts or property developments.
Therefore a tax investigation into her net wealth will show that she has, and has long since been, defrauding the tax man. Unless one has an addiction to casinos, drugs or expensive pussies. The money is somewhere, and difficult to hide. The only problem is that the tax man has to be instructed to look for it. Which is where my plan falls flat on its face, as Ms Watson has clearly often fallen on hers.

My advice to normal ordinary people is this. Joanne Watson is whats known as part of the political class. You are not. Therefore due to a harmless sounding thing called Self Assessment, unless you can account for every brick in your new patio, in your past tax returns. One day you will get fucked. Went in Sandwell Council Planning Meeting one time. Everybody from the council was in a turban and nobody spoke English. They just handed-out dodgy, unscrutinised and in some cases dangerous permissions to cousins and nephews who hadn't a fucking clue what they were doing; building regs, health and safety, insurance, traffic, environment, not the faintest idea. Local democracy, Labour style.
People who had lived and worked, traded in Sandwell for generations, walked the parks, fed the ducks, dug the allotments, stood no chance in opposing vandalous planning applications from those who, six months previously, had been living in the Indian sub-continent.
Labour would permit it's client, immigrant population anything, in exchange for votes from roadsfull of shabby, purple-painted, multi-occupancy houses, bogus postal voters and dead people. That's what they're like, that's what they do. Greedy gangster families who have systematically hijacked the Labour movement and shat in it's face.
Simultaneously, of course, they delight in that their corrupt actions predictably stir up racism. So they, and only they, can solve it. Quite a Nazi, really, your Brummie Labourite; loike Watson, party member, not very broight. .....and we can use them nig-nogs to keep the Tories out, ain't it, ower kid ?

Quick fact check here. Councillors are no longer paid expenses for attending meetings, at least not in places like Sandwell (I write as a Birmingham (Conservative) councillor) - they are paid allowances, regardless of attendance. In Birmingham, a backbencher gets about £15,500 pa. You can only get thrown off the council if you have failed to attend a single official meeting in (I think) six months.
She can't be chucked off as she's fulfilled the eligibility criteria.
BTW, guess who brought the new rules in? Yup - our present lords and masters.

labour dropped a candidate from a council election because he was of pakistani origin. the law lords unanimously found the labour party had broken the 1972 race relations act on this matter. labour's defence was political expediency. shame on them.

Just read the Law Lords judgment and it doesn't say that it was Labour Party policy of not standing ethnic minority candidates on predominantly white constituencies ( the case was about wards however) - the Brimingham Labour Party (to which I do not belong) has also changed it selection processes since the offence occurred 10 years ago and I am sure will make any further necessary changes.
I can think of plenty of cases where the Labour Party has selected ethnic minority candidates in predominantly white constituencies - in fact their record in this respect would appear to be far better than other parties.
