Anyone who believes in free markets and free trade has to believe as a corollary in the free movement of people. Guido is the son of immigrants who came from Ireland and India to London in the 1950s and 1960s for economic and social reasons. They came, primarily, to better themselves. Now having lived and worked in some of the world's greatest cities Guido still believes that London is the best of them all and is grateful that the city took in his parents.
Sure the public transport system sucks, it does in Tokyo and New York as well. Culturally New York is very self-centred and less internationalist, Tokyo is a bit of a mono-culture that just about tolerates foreigners. London is much more cosmopolitan than even New York with better French food than Paris, more bankers than Frankfurt and better nightlife than Berlin.
Many people have come here without the right paperwork, they have come here to work and better themselves. They are not the problem and should be allowed to stay and given if necessary an amnesty to make them legally resident. They enrich us all. It is the people who come here to abuse the welfare state and commit crimes that are the problem.

Too many people here, no room for outward growth, the city plan was created by Jackson Pollock rather than Haussmann, so improvements in infrastructure not really feasible.
If amnesty for illegals is based on economic priciples, re-zone them to places where their industry and ambition will be much better placed for the country as a whole. Dumfries perhaps, or Ebbw Vale. Rochdale. Just not SE England.

Having left my home town some time ago I observed last time I worked there that it was impossible to move using either public transport, a car and even a scooter was heavy going the streets were so crowded.
If you stopped moving in the City, you were just walked over such was the density of people.

The reason that there is overcrowding is because of stupid planning laws not because of too many people. The reason our economy is stuffed is because of the welfare system not because there are too many people. I completely agree with you Guido. As a conservative/libertarian I've always found the crypto-fascist language and rhetoric employed by the Right in this country slightly nauseating.
Immigration in this country IS a problem, but not because of the immigrants. It's a problem because our country is badly organised - clapped out, centralised NHS, education system, etc.

Ireland has always had a special arrangement since partition, as I'm sure you already know Guido. Consequently the Irish don't need passports to come to the UK, let alone a visa. UK citizens have the same rights when going to Ireland. This does not matter that much to the UK since in the unlikely event that the entire population of Ireland moved to the UK it would only increase the population by 5%. This is rather less than the project population increase from all other sources.
The issue here seems to be if people decide that they want to move to the UK to "better themselves" as you put it, then since the UK is in the top 10 nations in the world for living standard we can assume that several billion people will gravitate to the UK. Now the US has a land area 100times greater than the UK, it might very well be able to accomodate a couple of billion people before mass immigration became a serious problem, but the UK is already seriously overpopulated. The moral hazard introduced by regular "amnesties" for those that have come here illegaly would make this far worse, and would continue to do so until the UK had living standards on a par with Bangladesh
I prefer a swap system myself, so that as one immigrant comes in, one indigenous English goes out...government funded passage to Portugal will do me nicely thank you...any takers for my place here?

Immigration per se is not a problem, immigration rate is always a problem. If immigration is allowed to run at a rate faster than the host country can absorb then it leads to problems. That is very much the case in the UK and is the reason why immigration needs to be controlled. Some would see 'controlled' as a synonym for 'ended' and seek to stop inward migration. That would be wrong and ultimately economically self-defeating.
As to Boris' amnesty idea, he needs to explain the mechanics more but basically it is a good idea. Firstly by refusing to regularise people who have lived here and may wish to integrate properly you actually foster a more negative attitude to immigration than is necessary or healthy. Secondly you force the immigrant into the black market and consequently lose out on tax and actually are encouraging criminality. There are a whole host of other reasons why a limited amnesty is a good policy based on reality rather than hysteria.
Britain is now the most overcrowded country in Europe - with apparently more than a million foreign migrants arriving in the last year. This is completely unsustainable and there are good grounds for the analysis that the destruction of Britain's borders - along with flooding the country with migrants from every country in the world - is a prelude towards absorption of the UK into the EUSSR.
The BBC radio news today featured a story that basic food prices around the world are rising very fast. Indian rice and Asian rice has doubled in price in a year - and the impact of bio-fuels is set to make grain prices even higher.
We are facing economic depression - a runaway global population of 8-10 billion and a massive rise in energy and food prices. Britain cannot grow enough food for its own population - apaprently London only ever has 48 hourse food security.
If there is ever a real crisis - this overpopulated country would not be able to do what it did in the alst two world wards. We could not survive.

Amnesties already happen - in Spain. If you're against amnesties (which I am on the grounds that we have an overly generous benefits system which leads to adverse selection) then you need to thinking about the wider EU picture.

Sorry Guido but I think you have got this wrong. I don't see how you can have what are effectively open borders, such as that implied with yet another amnesty being granted for illegal immigrants, and at the same time have a welfare state open to all, no matter how much, or how little, individuals have paid into it. We can argue whether a welfare state is sustainable or even desirable, but the fact is that it is what we have in the UK.
There is another point. I'm the Son of an immigrant, many of who's fellow Countrymen and women were murdered by the Russians when the Baltic States were occupied at the end of WWII so I am not unsympathetic to genuine asylum seekers. However, here it seems that Boris is talking about people who have made a concious decision to break our laws and live here illegally. That sends a powerful message, not just to those immigrants who came here legally, doing it the hard way, but to the many millions of others living in the third world who would also be better off living in this country.
Sooner or later we will have to make hard decisions about who, and how many people, we let into this Country of ours and there will always be heart breaking stories and those in desperate need. We should have faced up to this decades ago, but with the political left, and sadly now some prominent Conservatives happy to use Race for their own purposes as a means of leverage political advantage I fear that only the extremists will gain in the long run.

The South East of England is full. There is no more room. Infrastructure can't cope, schools can't cope, hospitals can' cope. You need to earn £26k a year to be 'tax neutral' in the UK. How is importing millions of minimum wagers going to improve the economy, lower taxes, improve public services, raise standards of education?

So what do these immigrants do when they are out of work for short periods with kids or get sick and cannot afford the treatment on Bupa Guido? or cannot afford the rent and with their kids go on the street now they have lost their long term slave job with accomodation, are you saying deport them and give them no assistance? these people will be minimunm wage at best? they will be officially recognised and will therefore start making more and more demands and will soon enough have the polititians pandering to them for their votes.

Guido is right. The problem is Welfare, not immigration. I would support the abolition of immigration controls, but only if welfare was abolished at the same time. At that point, illegal immigration would cease to exist. But until then, there should be no amnesty. My wife, a highly qualified Doctor working for the NHS, and I have paid a shit load of money to the Government, and been forced to jump through endless bureaucratic hoops to enable her to stay in this country (without, quite rightly, recourse to public funds). Why should illegals be rewarded for breaking the law?

I can't say that I entirely agree with Boris on this one - it is the privilege of a chap who floats untouched above my (working class) level to be able to even consider such a thing. He will not win any votes with it.
I agree that the quality of immigrants is often fantastic and I'd swap them for our chavs any day. However, we shouldn't need to import 'talent' because most work requires no talent at all, merely skills which should be easily produced by our education system at current prices. That we aren't producing suitable workers in this overcrowded country is an indictment on our schooling and training.
Forever stuffing our capital (and our country) with more and more people is not the solution and runs against deeply held concerns that immigration has gone too far now.

Firstly Race or Religion has nothing to do with it.
It's to do with numbers, the country is creaking at the seams, one of the reason house prices are s high, and no we don't want all our green belt concreted over.
The infrastructure of this country is also creaking at the seams.
We also have a big problem of our own to deal with, that is the rapidly expanding underclass (largely white!) who are breeding like rats. We have enough scumbags of our own without shipping them in from all over the world.
We also see our traditions and
cultures trampled on and sidelined for fear of 'offending' minorities (Largely driven by white leftie middle class toss pots.
If you speak to the vast majority of people in this country, of all races, they think we need far stricter controls on imigration.
Until it is better controlled giving an amnesty would be crazy, and pouring petrol on the bonfire.
Not that it matters really wether you have an amnesty or not, no ones looking for them, and when they do find them they are let go.
I'm begining to think Boris winning could be disaster for the Tories, if he screws up it will hit them where it hurts.
Let Ken get back in, and the resentment towards labour will still fester away.
