Crikey, they only need one more for a 'Gang of Four' to start a new party..

So 5% of LibDem MPs are honourable to their electorate. What does that say for the remaining 95% ?

Let us pray they all vote for a referendum, as per their manifesto pledge and as democracy dictates.

It would be unthinkable ever again to vote for a Lib Dem who votes with the government on this one.

Calamity Clegg. What a twat.

I bet Gorgon is pissed off. He was relying on Clegg to take a few votes off Cameron. Looks like a straight fight now though.

MP's should all vote for a referendum- It's what this country needs.

In my opinion Brussles is a cesspit.

Having had the leader's position inhabited by, amongst others, a serial womaniser, a dog-murderer and a drunk, it looks like this man will succeed where they failed and bring about the destruction of the Liberal 'Democrat' Party.

His leadership appeared doomed even before the start. The 'Calamity' jibe cut so deep that even his kids are using it over the dinner table. Like Michael Howard before him, a run-in with Paxman should be replayed over and over again just in case people look like forgetting how shifty he is. Now the 'voting by abstaining' fiasco, which is so cynical that even Lib-Dem MPs are prepared to defy a three-liner.

If Cameron's Tories an Nu-Lab are both cheeks of the same arse, then
the Lib Dems seem doomed to become the waste matter squeezed out from between.

A day of infamy. We expect lies and deceit from the man who plotted to oust Blair for ten long years, and we expect a number of Brown's toadies to vote with the government because they are unable to think for themselves. We do not expect the Lib Dems to do the dirty on us, and abandon their manifesto commitments too.

I have voted Lib Dem myself on many occasions in the past, and particularly for council elections. Never again while Clegg is in charge.

I shall be checking how my local MP votes today. If she votes against a referendum I shall devote a lot of time campaigning against her. Hell, I'm so angry I might even join the Tory party.

what is the point of being a lib-dem if not to sneer sanctimoniously about being true to your principles?

i mean, i always assumed lib-dems accepted unelectability as the price to be paid for the more refined pleasure of moral posturing. now they've denied themselves even that. they're just lying losers.

Ahh yes, but for all the banter, will David Cameron make a commitment today that in the event of losing this vote, the Conservatives will put the EU, the Labour and Liberal parties on notice that a future Conservative government will give the people a referendum and let them have what was promised.

That single act would be an outright election winner, but....I#mn only dreaming!

I hope you aren't trying to suggest that Brusells is morally superior?

It may think it is, but its is simply a larger more odious version of a turd that is the current British government. No matter how much glitter you put on one a turd is still a turd..

The problem with that option, is that it is the nuclear option. At the moment, if the UK parliament fails to ratify the treaty, it will be dead, that simple... I am sure it will come back in son of son of constitution, but thats another matter.

But, once the treaty is ratified by all the member states, it becomes law. The British Government will have lost the ability to refuse permission, as they have already given it.

We talk of 'new government' but in reality, Government and the Crown are continueous. We cannot unpick the locks of the treaty, we would need a sledgehammer.

Once we have signed it, we have lost it...

All is not lost. Clegg has sacrificed the credibility of the Lib Dems to ensure that Brown is defeated. Only Cameron has any credibility or honesty now. Watch News international switch to Cameron. Today is a seismic day and we should be grateful to Clegg that he has virtually ensured a Tory victory at the next election. The tragedy is that we will lose some well intentioned people in the process but that is collateral damage. If I were Cameron I would think about booking removal men. And if I were Brown I would do likewise but for different reasons! How can he be so blind? Even Jackie Ashley told him that to deny a referendum would be "political suicide".
power has decisively and irrevocably changed hands today,

The Liberal Democrats should revert to being called the Liberals, as they are no longer a democratic party.

They are not worthy of the title Democrats.

All those voting tonight to reject a referendum are dishonourable people.

They have lost all moral authority and are a disgrace to democracy.

I hope it destroys their party - with such utter lack of integrity they have lost the right to exist.

Nick Clegg is a traitor. He should be taken to the Tower - hung drawn and quartered and his disembowelled remains displayed for all to see. This is a very bad day for democracy.

This was the final treaty, why was this treaty final?

Because it gives Europe ALL the power it needs to overide ANY other nations powers.

In otherwords, Europe now own us and we are at their mercy.

it will no longer matter if you vote any pro Europe party, Europe control them.

Cameron cannot do a thing without Europes consent, unless he pulls us out of Europe and fast.

leave it to long and any goverment who wishes to pull out of europe will be met by the European army who will slaughter any country that wishes to leave!

the magnitude of what our political class has done and how they have betrayed us has not yet sunk in.

but it will.

You are right Cameron would win a landslide with that, but Cameron is a fully pai up Europhile traitor.

in fact i pledge that if Cameron does not do that then i will vote Labour, as either way they will just be puppet goverments with no more power than a local town hall.

the next general election - if Brussles lets us have one(no im not joking) will be a clear fight between any party that wants out of Europe and any parties that want in.

better make your stand Cameron.

I actually don’t get Nick Smegma’s move. The LibDem botherers I encounter on my doorstep are normally in total agreement with everything I say.

Castration followed by public hangings for sex offenders?. “Yes, Mr Anon, that’s actually official LibDem policy, in fact we’re the only party supporting it”.

Better rehabilitation for sex offenders and full re-integration into society?. “Yes, that’s official LibDem policy, too.”

But is the moon made of green cheese? “Well not quite, Mr Anon. But I’m glad you have raised that point because it’s something the other parties are completely out of touch on. The LibDems recently commissioned detailed scientific research which confirms that the moon is, in fact, comprised purely of Cheddar cheese.”

Abolition of the LibDem party? “That’s a very important point Mr Anon, and I agree it is something that needs wider public debate. The LibDem party is in fact the ONLY party that has lobbied the Government on this, and to their shame, both the Government and the Opposition refuse even to discuss it.”

You Tories never fail to make me chuckle, you don’t get it and will never get it.

You scoff at the lib dems who rebelled, but those rebellious MPs were supporting you…Square that one. Takes flip flopping to new dimensions, ridiculing people who actually supported your amendment to the Lisbon Treaty Bill

Those who rebelled, their seats are now safe as houses. They can go to their constituencies with their heads held high, and will be admired for their stance.

Also today was supposed to be Browns annus horriblous, but he is back at No ten this evening chuckling into his drinking chocolate.

Cameron lost, IWAR look stupid, and furthermore in the weeks running up to this vote IWAR did more to publicize the Treaty debate than the Tories. In fact cowardly cambo hide behind the coat tails of IWAR.

"today was supposed to be Browns annus horriblous"

Thank you for your interesting and original summary of today's events. I, like many others, suspect that Brown and Clegg have not so much handed the next general election to Cameron on a plate, but served it on a supersized gold platter with lashings of extra cheese on the side.

A point of pedantry: even calamitous Gordon, with his undoubted expertise in fiddling statistics to suit his political needs, would struggle to fit an 'annus horribilis' into one day. Give him his due, though, he is doing his best.

The very thought of Gordon and his 'annus horribilis' is too disgusting to contemplate, though I have no doubt that Stanislav could describe it in alarming detail. I bet it is extremely hairy and spotty. Ick.

"We do not expect the Lib Dems to do the dirty on us, and abandon their manifesto commitments too."

Well, actually, I do. A Liberal councillor had the chance to work with a Conservative council where Labour had been thrown out of power for the first time since 1974 when the council was created by that utter arse Edward Heath.

She said: "I can't work with the Tories. I can only work with Labour." Even though the Labour council had done the dirty on the people of her own ward. And had lost the council.

You cannot trust a Liberal. As Calamity Clegg has so adequately proved.

And they are stupid, too.

Divisions in the Conservatives? Only three MP's voted against the party and all three are die-hard Europhiles (including Ken Clarke) who'd be equally at home on the lib-dem benches anyway...

Brussels is a cesspit, brussels is a cesspit! We should be in the EU but refuse to hand money to Brussels until the accounts are signed off, and demand our input be nil until the CAP is reformed
