Gold, Girls, Brown & Bust Banks

Guido wishes he had bought his daughters more gold each when they were born. Still with gold at $1030 an ounce, tripling in three years is satisfactory. Thanks Gordon for depressing the price.

When Brown and Darling try to present themselves as the safe pairs of hands in this coming time of economic crisis, remember that Brown was the financial whizz who sold Britain's gold reserves at the historic low for dollars. Now as the dollar goes into freefall the total loss from that idiotic decision (he even told the market to get short before he sold off the reserves) will dwarf the few billion lost by the Bank of England on White Wednesday. Brown's judgement is neither good or timely.

We have yet to have the final reckoning for Northern Rock, where some estimate that over 20% of the loans are to mortgagees with negative equity. The Fed arranged the sale of Bear Stearns in comparable circumstances over this weekend. It took dithering Brown months to make the wrong decision on Northern Rock. Remember how Lloyds TSB was interested in buying Northern Rock in much the same way Morgan Chase has just bought Bear Stearns?

The Tory benches are full of people who have worked in financial markets, Letwin, Redwood, even Andrew Mitchell and many more understand the markets far more than the student union activist turned TV producer cum PM and the dull barrister ever will. Faced with the worst financial crisis since the seventies what did they do? Implement a pre-emptive growth package in the budget? No, they threatened to tax plastic bags and put up car duties and taxes for those on lower incomes. Pathetic.
UPDATE : The LibDem benches, it has been pointed out in the comments, also have their fair share of brains acquainted with financial markets - Cable and Laws to name two. The Labour benches are devoid of experience.

Guido - the difference between Bare Stains and Northern Wreck is that the primary motivation of the UK government was and is preservation of jobs and the local economy in their core constituencies. Lloyds TSB would have shut the operation down and absorbed management of the assets into its existing infrastructure. So £110 Bn of taxpayers' money put at risk to preserve 6000 jobs, half of which will have to go anyway now, and the other half in a few years time. In addition there was around NR a large legal and professional support network, the salaries were spent locally, the local sports teams were funded (NUFC and the Falcons to name but a few), they were spending over £100M in the local construction trade on two new head offices (one would not do!) and the Charitable Foundation paid for all their favourite causes and employed the usual Newcastle business and political mafia.

Worry not, good people. All it needs to get Britain back on track is more state intervention. Nice to know our money is being spent so wisely and efficiently.

Ed Balls, the Children's Secretary, will tomorrow announce a £218 million expansion of Family Intervention Projects - a scheme which tackles potential troublemakers by signing them up to good behaviour contracts.

Police could issue a "baby Asbo" following a complaint from a teacher that a child was skipping lessons or concerns from a neighbour about poor parental behaviour.

An "assertive and persistent'' case worker would be assigned to each child to "grip" the family and ensure they all get suitable help, such as drug treatment or anger management.

"Communities want lasting improvements and that means not only stopping bad behaviour but also changing it and intervening early," said Mr Balls.

Saw 'Call me Dave' on the box this weekend. His words were not exactly encouraging. Essentially it was "with the benefit of hindsight we shouldn't be here".

Well that is all well and good Dave, but what are you proposing to do to get us out of the Brown stuff?

Here he was far less forthcoming. One can sympathize with Dave - if he had proposed a good policy then Brown would have nicked it faster than the four tyres off a moving car in Liverpool.

Dave's problem is that he cannot convince us that he has a solution to the present crisis. At least Vince Cable seems able to analyze the present problem. And this is more than can be said of Osbourne.

Dave needs more 'meat' in his shadow treasury team if he is to win. He just cannot expect to do so by staying quiet and watching the comedy of errors farce that is Labour's treasury front bench.

All very true. It all goes to show that there is a world of a difference between "being a friend of business" (i.e. cosying up to them for donations) and really knowing how to handle what goes on in the private sector.

Perhaps a Conservative government could outsource the bank regulation duties of the FSA to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

'The worst financial crisis since the seventies...'! Are you sure? This is as bad as France 1789 - and you know what happened then, Mr Guillotine! The seventies - a piece of cake. The Great Depression - only took a world war to get over it. This is massively more dangerous than anything seen in modern times!

Looking into the future - the Dow at 3,000, FTSE at 1,500 by 2010. The good news - Brown loses a no confidence vote and we have an election by the end of this year.

You can call him dave, I can think of a better name. said...

The reason Brown raised taxes for those on Low incomes, is that he wants them to be dependent on the state. he wants them to come to the state cap in hand asking for a handout.

What he forgets is that the majority (a growing majority) of those on low incomes are pensioners. Who either because they do not like to beg or have saved for a rainy day (unlike that useless cunt Brown) will now take a pay cut when the 10% tax rate goes.

But where was Dave when Brown announced his master plan, where was his voice? I certainly didn't see and hear him taking Gordon to task.

backwoodsman said...

Because nulab have been so successful in building their dependent client base , see this weeks ST for the startling figures on the %'s getting all of their 'income' from the state in many areas, there are clearly a lot of people with an interest in the status quo ! That is likely to inhibit the Tories from proposing anything too startling.
However , when its possible to save a reported £7,000 from your income benefit and take the kids off to Goa for a little light recreational binging, there probably is room for action

Anonymous said...

On the TV call-me-Dave discussed the government borrowing figures whilst not mentioning that the 3.0%figure is an EU imposed limit.

The result of this EU limit is that our UK politicians have their hands tied behind their backs when it comes to the necessary actions they may need to take to get us out of the morass.

A very wise man writes said...

Balls is Prescott
Ever since the Today programme on Friday March 7th, Ed Balls, our Secretary of State for Schools, Family and Children, has been destroying my concentration. He runs through my head like a cheap tune whose title I can't remember. He has come up in almost every conversation I've had. I am now thinking of stopping people in the street and saying 'That Ed Balls eh....'. I'm pretty sure what will follow is that now familiar explosion of anger beginning, 'That bastard, he.....!'. The first problem is that Balls is so flagrantly not cut out to be a politician. His appearance on that Today show was heroically incompetent. John Humphrys sliced, diced and sauteed the poor fool so effectively that I began to sorry for him in spite of the fact that he appeared to be doing to A levels what he has done to everything else he touches - ballsing them up. The second problem is that he exudes invincible arrogance. As I think I have said before, he has a 'Wapshott' face in which a certain airy blandness is combined with a shadowy smirk suggesting absolutely groundless faith in his own intellectual powers. There is something so utterly tasteless about the man. Look, for example, at the house he owns in Castleford - it appears to have no windows which may explain why he blinks so much when he goes outside. The point is, I now realise, that he is John Prescott's replacement. Prezza was employed by Blair and Brown to be so perfectly ridiculous that he made them look good. Ever since his departure, the government has been dangerously exposed. But now Balls has risen to such prominence, now he is routinely blamed for everything from bad schools to bad weather, he has become the new Prescott. Normal service has been resumed.

NOW LABOUR PLANS LAW TO BAR WHITE MEN FROM JOBS

Monday March 17,2008
By Macer Hall, Political Editor

WHITE men could be blocked from jobs under a Government equality drive spearheaded by Harriet Harman.

The Labour Deputy Leader and Equalities Minister is planning laws to promote women and ethnic minorities in the workplace.

Firms would be allowed to favour candidates for jobs or promotion on the grounds of race or gender.

Officials insist the move is “positive action” rather than discrimination and remain opposed to job quotas for women or ethnic minorities.

Tory MP Mark Pritchard said: “This is yet more political correctness from Harriet Harman, pandering to the rampant feminism still lurking in Labour. It is a counter-productive and patronising idea that can only breed resentment.”

A source close to Ms Harman said the move was designed to bring Britain’s employment law closer in line with EU practices.

The aim was to “address under-representation” in cases where candidates were “equally qualified”.

The source added: “This is not about positive discrimination, we don’t think that is the right way to do it.”

The move is likely to be outlined in a Government policy document to be published within the next two months.

Ministers hope to introduce a new Equalities Bill into Parliament this year.

The measure would apply only in cases where two or more equally-qualified candidates were after the same post.

You wouldn't see the French putting up with the crap meted out to the freeborn indigenous Southern tax-paying Englishman.

They cannot lock everyone up, or indeed anyone, unless we allow it to remain limited to a few courageous pensioners, who are shamefully unsupported by the indifferent vast majority.

Hit these cunts where they will pay immediate attention - in their pockets. Never mind deducting just the pension part of council tax, ditch the police precept if you are dissatisfied with the performance of those idle jobsworths, ignore all speeding tickets, and parking fines, and most of all withdraw your coerced support for the State Propaganda Unit, the BB-fuckinC.

Backwoodsman's ST link is worth a deeper look:

Sixty areas of Britain have become so dependent on state handouts that more than half of all adults are unemployed and on benefits, official figures have revealed.

In one part of Rochdale 76% of working-age adults are receiving out-of-work benefits. Other areas where benefits have become a way of life include parts of Manchester, Liverpool, London and Plymouth.

In Britain, one in five children – 2.2m – now live in households entirely dependent on state benefits, the highest proportion in Europe.

Nice to know the state cares so much.

Guido is an Irish man who lives in Ireland.

Why do you think he always uses the Irish economy as a beacon of prosperity?

Yes Ireland has a low tax economy, but its recent impressive growth came about due to the Irish being in the Euro. Ireland has also received billions in subsidy from the EU.

Yet Guido ( an Irishman in Ireland ) hates the EU and the Euro.

Furthermore Ireland has no NHS, no welfare state, and virtually no credible infrastructure. Its getting better, but with that nasty EU money.

Let me tell you a story about Ireland. ( I go quite often ).

My daughter was sick one night while in Ireland, we called a doc, and he met us at the local hospital at 1:00am. She had a virus, and he prescribed the appropriate medicine. He then wrote out his invoice £60 Euro. I flashed my NHS card, and he said thank you very much and we left with the 60 Eu in OUR pockets..

The next day our niece who lives in Ireland caught the same virus, again the doc was called late at night, same scenario unfolded, except her mother had to part with the 60 Euro.

Incidentally my niece also received an invoice when she was born, 1650 Euros.

So Guido keep on using Ireland as a beacon.

to say that Ireland 'has no welfare state' is not correct -it it actually has a fairly decent system of child allowances, health care, dole allowances, pensions etc
it just doesn't have the monumental size of the UK's
It also does not have (as badly) the social problems of the UK, as it doesn't have anything like the huge urban areas/sink estates of the UK. there is no angle to this -its just a fact, and a fairly obvious one at that.

Ireland does NOT have a welfare state.

It has bare minimum support for the unemployed, and there is no NHS, if you have an accident, you get a hospital bill, unless u have private health cover.

And yes inner city Dublin does have very real social problems; Ireland also has one of the worse alcohol, drug and gambling problems in the whole of the EU.

Guido always uses Ireland as beacon for his economic drivel, and that is what it is drivel. I lived in Ireland for a year, and couldn’t wait to return to the UK, it is a banana republic with little or no institutions.

- the amoutn I pay in taxes for the "free" NHS would buy me top of the range private medical insurance so I would not have to subsidise cretins such as you. You are welcome to what runs for a health service in this country and if the negligent stff don't get you, the MRSA and the Clostridium Difficile certainly will. Heard the latest - Muslim NHS medical staff refuse to follow hygiene guidelines as it involves scrubbing with alcohol-based lotion.

I reckon the whole work-force (there's an oxymoron for you) from that international 5-star shithole Stoke has abandoned the pubs, betting shops, wife-beating and all other approved ZaNuLab pastimes for the benefit classes to come here to support Gary-the-Cunt-Elsworth.
PikeysRUs have descended on us by the Transit Van load to explain to the people who support the feckless freeloading Northern cunts, just why it is such a good thing for all concerned. AND THEY FUCKING BELIEVE IT!!
Gary himself is starting to look almost intelligent amongst this illiterate, inumerate crowd of clingons on the arsehole of the North.
What time do the benefit offices open, or is the Giro just delivered by courier now?

Shorter life expectancy than where? Swaziland? No. Russia? No. Greenland? No. Turkey? No. Croatia? No. Portugal? Still no.

The UK? The USA? Yes by a "whopping" 0.8 and 0.1 of a year respectively, according to the CIA Factbook.

Ireland ranks 32nd in world wide life expectancy with 77.9 years. Not too shabby though, eh, considering the world average is only 65.82 years.

Got any more fascinating statistics about Ireland? Shortest people in Europe? Likeliest to smell of wee? Greatest eaters of moss?

Yes I have silass

Inflation in Gudio’s utopian Ireland is running at 2.5 per cent; inflation has risen steadily and last year reached 4 per cent, inflationary pressure are back and Irelands inflation is set to break 3% very soon. House price inflation is still rampant

The past 12 months have seen pay squeezes across the board in Ireland. In the past 2 years Irish cops, nurses and public servants have all been out on strike.

There is already a plastic bag tax and bin tax, and car tax and insurance in Ireland is unbelievably high ( I know I did live there ).

One of the most popular programmes on Eire TV was called “Rip off Republic” , its like our watch dog. Prices of goods and services in Ireland would make your eyes water the programme tried, but failed to turn the tide of high prices.

All of this and Guido tries to convince you idiots that Ireland is an economic utopia. Horse Shit.

In fact the credit crunch will hit Ireland like a sledge hammer, as it economic boom has been solely fuelled by US investment, DELL, ORACLE, HP, DHL, Microsoft, US Banks. All these companies only based in Ireland in the past 10 years.

*We are witnessing the slow death of Neo-Keynsian orthodoxy. An increase in the money supply is inflation. We need to return our currencies worldwide to a gold standard peg.

*Until we do this we are going to experience a hyper-inflationary catastrophe that will create the 'Hitlers' of the twenty-first century.

*Who will the elites blame next? The workers and trade unions? No they are broken and powerless. And workers ask for more money because the consequence of devaluing money is a rise in prices.

*Anyone else? Maybe the Arabs. But no, in reality there's just the elite left. Who will you blame?

*Moneterism was a failure; we can't do that crap again. Solutions? Gold standard, powerful industry, savings and investment. There are no alternatives; this is classical economic theory.

*When Hayek asked Keynes if he was worried that some of his diciples were getting carried away with his ideas, Keynes turned to him and said, don't worry I'll tell everyone that it was only meant as a special measure in special circumstances. He'd tell everyone to think something different soon enough. Very shortly after this, Keynes was dead.

It has to be said that Ireland is as fucked as we are and for the same reasons - rampant money supply growth. So are

Spain,
Australia,
New Zealand,
Holland,
Croatia,
Bulgaria,
the Baltic states,
and Russia

Creating debt out of thin air and then selling it as real money. Some would call that a confidence trick, but Keynsians think it's a great way to run an economy.

very good Silas, that made me laugh - I wish I had more time on my hands to dig out some facts to disprove that anonymous fucking idiot.

Ireland is expensive though, and it will suffer badly in the recession we're due - but it is not as fucked as the UK because it has'nt had broon raping it senseless for the last 10 years.
it will recover quicker.

private health insurance is not excessively expensive and I would rather pay for that then spunk good money after bad on the uselessly inefficient NHS. its a fucking black hole.

anonymong - no one says Ireland is some utopia - we merely highlight some better ways of doing things - like education, corporate tax rates, and lack of huge NHS/welfare mong bill.

FFS STOP TAKING THE WELFARE STATE FOR GRANTED!!!

Some of us HAVE suffered under this 'system' under ZaNuLabour and know that it stifles self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

I am sick and tired of having those who 'provide' me with benefits treat me like a brain-dead ZaNuLabour twonk. I WANT TO WORK!!! I WANT TO EARN MY OWN CASH!!

The trouble is that we've had God knows how many 'welfare reform ministers' since Frank Field (the ONLY decent one) take our taxes, talk shite and do FUCK ALL!!!

So please stop celebrating this shower of shite that passes as a 'Labour Government' and wake up and smell the coffee!!!

I want to work. I do NOT want dependency.

I want a hand up, NOT A HAND OUT!!!

Elsby, you are an unquestioning,
Labour supporting tossflap of the highest order.

Now fuck off and join Gay Gordo on his rocking horse.

Agreed. Singapore and Hong Kong are more to my liking. Their tax rates are even lower and their economies even more deregulated.

"See scratch the surface, and the Tories and their supporters are still NASTY NASTY NASTY"

Why are we nasty for wanting to pay for our own healthcare? why is it not nasty to force other people to pay for your healthcare (which is what the NHS is about)? I don't want your money and I'd appreciate it if you would leave mine alone.

"*Moneterism was a failure; we can't do that crap again. Solutions? Gold standard, powerful industry, savings and investment. There are no alternatives; this is classical economic theory."

Monetarism was successful when it was tried properly in the early-mid 80s but Lawson cocked things up by changing the money supply measurements resulting in boom and bust. Agreed though that the best solution is gold standard etc. The time has come for the economics of Von Mises, Hayek and Rothbard.

Steady on shotgun - you miss the point of my post. Of course it is votes, but if you were a Labour candidate here, you could turn a Geordie out on to the street, shag his missus, poison his whippet and spit in his pint and he would still vote for you - at worst he would abstain. My point is that £110Bn of our money has been put at risk to prop up some jobs that will be lost anytime soon. the tragedy is that when the jobs are lost NuLabour will blame EU regulations and global financial meltdown (the latter with soem justification) and the local population will be even more firmly latched onto the public sector teat.
