Cameron "Gets It", Can He Do It?

This morning in Birmingham Brown eulogised to Labour's spring conference the utopia he is building, meanwhile Dave has given a more realistic speech to Taffy Tories in Wales.

His speech accepts that voters are going to demand more openness, transparency, honesty and control. As Guido predicted on Thursday, he has returned to his PMQs themes once again. The Cameroons believe there are political dividends to be had in aligning with the anti-politician mood, the call from the 2005 intake of Tory MPs advancing constituency recalls for bad MPs is part of that anti-political agenda.

Cameron's speech today said "I get it" loud and clear:
Public faith in our political institutions is draining away. According to MORI, the proportion of people trusting politicians to put the needs of the country before the needs of party halved between 1974 and 1999. Trust in Parliament fell from 54% in 1983 to 14% in 2000. Since then it’s got even worse. Our Parliament is scorned. Our parties are shrinking ... Let's be clear what they think of us: "you lie and you spin, you fiddle your expenses and you break your promises." To describe this disengagement and cynicism as a ‘mood’ is to underestimate both the depth and the intensity of the breakdown in relations between the government and the governed.
So Dave has identified the symptoms, does he know what has caused it?
To do that, we need to understand why this political breakdown has happened. A lot of it is to with behaviour. The behaviour of a minority of individual politicians, in all parties. Behaviour in the House of Commons.
Most of all he blames the government's culture of spin, the three thousand press officers and the cynicism of politicians who promise what can't ever be delivered, with the single-minded pursuit of favourable headlines rather than real results in mind. All of which is in the DNA of New Labour.

Anti-politics is the new politics. You have read it here almost daily for four years. Cameron's new politics shows promise, his post-bureaucratic agenda is about limiting the state and the unlimiting of society. Those of us who are anti-politics are the majority at election time, if Cameron can convince the non-voting majority that he will walk the walk as well as talk the talk he could win a landslide. We won't ever vote for the Labour Party, yet why should we vote for the Tories? We are the sceptical and cynical majority who see politicians as a problem, not a solution...

we need Gordon to stay clinging by his fingernails right up until the next election to inflict the maximun damage so Labour will never see the light of day again.

I feel voters may be coming round to a similar feeling that they had when they voted Margaret Thatcher into power.

People were so desperate after the Labour Government of 1974 - 1979 that they were willing to take the risk and vote for something revolutionary.

I hope Dave Cameron can walk the walk. There is a risk he may prove to be a big disappointment - but how many people will be willing to give him a chance anyway. I suspect a lot of people will after 2 more years of Labour in charge.

He has caught the mood and people out here in the real world are listening.

John from Spain said...

It is about time that one of our reveered politicians realised that the age of 'Spin' is over, and that even with Labours dumbing down of the education system there is a majority of the electorate that are now cynical about anything that comes out of the houses of parliament

Don't vote???

They'd settle for that --- continuing to be elected on a 10% turnout, however bad it would look. The only thing that will motivate them is the fear of NOT being elected, and losing the spoils of office.

Lets have true politics. Issue a ballot paper that includes a box that reads "I think that none of the above are fit for my vote". then watch the bastards squirm.

Guido bang on as usual. The first politician that says sorry, means it and then gets on with it will win. Cf the West Wing when Bartlett was just starting to run for the Presidency, what made Josh, Toby etc etc go with him was a small meeting when Bartlett admitted he had got something wrong to a farmer. Everyone sat up, and he went on to say he was hoping that being President would mean he could change his mistake. Everyone makes mistakes - why can't politicians learn from them

Cameron is a chameleon. He reflects what's going on around him. First every response of his was 'green' (hug a husky, watch a windmill), now he has latched on to the fact that few like politicians. He lacks substance.

He did not stick to his promise to get the Tories out of the EPP. Brown and Clegg have ratted on the referendum. Why should we believe any of them?

Ufnortunately the anti-politics majority still believe in a sate-run and state-funded education system, health service, pension system etc. People despise politicians but believe in a welfare state that is dependent on medling politicians. When the anti-politics majority becomes libertarian then we shall see some real change.

Answer is simple trust the people with political power not the politicians. More direct participation and a lot less focus group decision making. If the vote goes against what the politicians want then don't allow them to keep rebranding it and trying to flog it to us again. Crack down on official wrong doing. Prosecute rigorously and remove pensions from politicians, bureaucrats and public employees who lie, cheat or break the law.

Any politician who wants to change the status quo has got to be brave, very brave. The entire left-wing media are just waiting for Cameron to step out of the regimented, comfortable neo liberal consensus. As soon as he does, the snipers will start - Polly bloody Toynbee (prat!), McGuire, Portillo.

The thing he's got to get across is Toynbee, Portillo, McGuire, et al are the past, the failed past and he's the new kid on the block with new ideas. And he must NOT back down!!

Thanks, Guido. You may think of yourself as sceptical and cynical, but maybe it is the spirit of the original Cynic, Diogenes, going out with his lantern to find an honest man. Far from sure that Dave is the one, but at least there is a faint glimmer of hope in the deepening gloom of the last decade.

Ah, Dave 'just about to be reprimanded for not declaring expenses' Cameron decides to go on the attack.

Yep, that's Dave. Just as bad as the rest of them. I wouldn't mind the sleeze so much if he had a decent principled policy - just one would be a start - but he's just a 'say anything, do anything for a vote' will-o-the-wisp.

The decline in respect for MP’s has completely coincided with the rise in the political power of TV News. The broadcasters have systematically ridiculed the elected politician year in year out for 20 years or more. But there is no Register of Interests for the staff of TV and radio news departments - why not? What bungs are they getting? What freebies are they getting? What professional standards do they have to comply with? Who bloody elected them?

They have a de facto veto on what Cameron can say. It is a democratic outrage.

They are the reason we have had Blair and now this idiot Brown for so long and cannot get rid of them.

We have a mechanism for getting rid of politicians - it is called election time, but we have no mechanism for getting rid of politically biassed and corrupted commentators, presenters, correspondents. They have appointed themselves to the most influential medium and we have no say who they are - it is an absolutely crazy situation.

TV News needs reforming to put power back where it belongs - with people we elect and can sack, and not the arrogant out of control TV superstars. Reform the TV and radio people while you are reforming the way MPs behave. The whole system is a democratic mess.

Yup.

Use IT for referenda on anything important - including policy decisions on law/health/education etc.

Abolish parties and make elected MP's solely responsible for representing their individaul constituents - worth about £50 grand a year max.

Weight voting - everyone has a vote but people who are net recipients from the state (state employees or benefit junkies) have votes devalued compared to net contributors.

thick as thieves said...

but aren't we encouraging their disgraceful behaviour by not voting. then they just have to play the marginals game and it allows joker kingmakers like ashcroft to pop up.
if the premise is the government wins the best answer is not to give in but to vote out every sitting MP and councillor in every local and general election. serving only one term would deny these thieving cunts the time and opportunity to steal from us. not voting is what they want. admittedly the very low turnouts are making them look like cunts which is probably why they are planning on lowering the voting age to boost those low numbers.
the government may always win. the question is by how much. we need to make these fuckers sweat and not let them off the hook by not voting.

You CANNOT be for AND against something at the same time. Its all about tough choices, that is the point. That is your job. Make a tough decision and represent that view to the electorate.

These tossers are all 'anti nuclear' CND in the constituency and then vote for it in cabinet.

Well make the case for it you bastards.. And if you vote for it stand by that decision otherwise you are just a spineless, lying, two faced, contradictiory, hypocrite, fraudster..

"Of course this Post Office should stay open Granny, but we don't have the money. It's £150 million you know. You wouldn't want us to waste that kind of money."

"Northern Rock 100 Billion. Isn't that 100 years worth of subsidy ?"

"Ahh, well that's not real money"

"Iraq, Afganistan £3.1bn up to 2005 alone .. 300 years more of subsidy ?"

"Well that's not real money either, we just print it, its not taxes."

" Isn't that causing all this Inflation you are trying to stop?"

"No. Well anyway Granny, I fully support your Post Office"

" so it remains open ?"

"If I can do anything I will"

"You could just say .. stay open and it would. You are a sort of Home secretary aren't you?"

" Yes, I will give you every support"

" so .. Its staying open then ?"

" As I said every support short of actual help."

Then fucking well open it.. you only have to say so and it's done..
Or if you think its a waste of money then just say so

COME CLEAN. SHOUT OUT FROM YOUR OWN QUIVERING LIPS ' IT IS A WASTE OF PUBLIC MONEY AND I WON'T SUPPORT IT'.

Yes Guido; but simply not voting is not the answer. The only way as I see things is to get involved not run away.

This does not mean just putting your X next to a Conservative candidate and hoping for the best.

It means parting with your £15 joining the Conservative Party and forcing the bastards to listen. If they still dont bang the bloody table very hard until they do. If that don't work then there is aways lets hope, PEACEFULLY hitting the streets in numbers that even the BBC can not ignore. Because they will try extremely hard to. Of that you can be very well assured.

Left wing protest organizations have been controlled on both sides of the Atlantic for many decades, by the ruling class. Which is why they have all suddenly gone AWOL, when the real fascists are in the driving seat.

ANTI-FASCIST LEAGUE my ass. These people don't even know what fascism is, for gods sake.

The people are left with nothing to protect their interests. They did in reality never have anything that did, in the first place. Except the Conservative Party and thats not been much better then the rest, to say the least.

However in the age of the internet we do not now need corruptible or corrupted large covertly funded bodies like The Labour Party Trades Unions and Student Groups to organize us.

For how much longer this situation will be tolerated by the Ruling class is anyones guess. So there is no time like the present.

But taking your ball home and crying to mummy will not help anything. This has been happening for many years now and look where it has now got us?

Politicians are lying because they know that they are no longer running anything but the ever smaller details. They are doing as the are told by the New World Order. In the guise of the EU and the UN.

This is not conspiracy theory, it is an every day fact of life.

The in your face truth is our politicians are tied like greedy overfed pigs waiting for their next set of orders.

The only thing they understand is civil disorder. Tax strikes, extremely large but peaceful protests. Rotten eggs. Very rude words shouted in their ear. They understand this but it will not make the slightest bit of difference, while the population is still politically racially and religiously divided from top to bottom.

Our problem however is not our politicians individual or otherwise.

Our problem is OUR MEDIA which long since completely sold out to the New World Order. Every single one of them without any exceptions whatsoever.

We may have a free enough press in law, but whats the law got to do with it? What we do not have and have not for at least 94 years is free newspaper, broadcast EDITORS or even owners.

We have left, right and middle politics everywhere and more then enough of all 3 in the MSM.

What we do not have is libertarian politics anywhere outside the internet and absolutely no LIBERTARIAN MSM in any shape or form whatsoever.

Even some people that describe themselves as libertarians such as Dave and Boris dont seem to know what one is anymore.

This country is based on libertarian thinking. It is the bed rock of our once free liberal nation. It is what many of our grandfathers died in wars to protect.

We cant even smoke in any of our pubs and PRIVATE clubs of all things. It is indeed more free in so called communist China then here in an every increasing amount of cases.

It is the MEDIA headed up by the most evil institution under gods Sun/son the BBC that is our judge jury and prison guards.

Our anger resentment and hatred should be directed not at our now useless parliament and the pathetic bunch of no bodies that currently sit on its benches.

It should be directed at the FUCKING BBC ASAP.

For plainly being not fit for purpose, full of fascist establishment New World Order EU, and UN bullshit, of the highest fucking order.

We need a completely new movement (politicians, lawyers, social workers and their ilk BANNED) The trick is to catch the public mood and run with it, call it something like the Liberty Party with built in referendums and really listen to the people.

See

http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/templates/search/document.cfm/20660

Why isn't CCSB part of the Tory Party? Who controls it? Is it a party within a party? Why is this mechanism being used? Why aren't CCSB figures being reflected in the Tory party accounts? What is the tax status of CCSB since presumably it does not obtain the exemption from taxation of donation income/VAT available to political parties?

tory boys never grow up said...

Talking about bits of the Tory Party which don't belong to the Tory Party for donation reporting or accounting purposes it is also worth remembering that the Tory Party conference (and its dinners/balls) also fall into this category. Tory Conference is run by a separate comany and hence all the corporate sponsorship of conference (that is reported by the other parties as donations) does not get reported to the Electoral Commission - eventhough it often gets reproted as donations to the Tories in the accounts of the donor. This would of course be very useful if the donors were foreigners who are not permitted to make direct donations to a political party.

Oh well I'm sure transparency Dave is now going to make everything transparent.

Anti,

Surely whether Cameron "gets it" or not is not in dispute. Simply by acknowledging that "it" exists he must. The crucial question therefore is whether he can and will act to fix it.

Personally, I think the mere fact that he's the first pol to publicly say, ",look! There's a bloody great elephant over there by the sideboard," indicates at least some willingness to make changes, even if only for party political benefit. The real question is: Can he force the changes past the entrenched herd of swine?

In this I think he has one advantage: a strong cohort of young, new MPs untainted by the past - see the recall idea. Assuming he wins the next election, that band will grow.

Will he make use of this and keep his promises? Only time will tell.

kinglear......west wing isn't real, dear. It's made up. A bit like Prime Minister's Questions or the falling crime figures. It's no good comparing the made up events that haven't really happened with real life. It just doesn't work. Try to get some sleep and stay off the wine.

Anon @ 12.35, and killemall @1.26, I think you guys are onto something here.
If "none of the above" appeared on every ballot paper, and received a majority, it would trigger a re-run in 30 days, no previous candidates being allowed to stand, except of course NOTA. It would be costly, but it would concentrate the fuckers' minds most wondrously, and clear a lot of (read most of them) dross off the party lists. Together with a few previously mentioned items, like minimum residency periods for candidature, NO parachuting from Party HQs, and we might make a start at restoring some semblance of democracy.
The African in the fuel store is of course that no cunt who has already been elected is going to support such a scheme any more than PR.
Perhaps if it was put in a manifesto, they couldn't welsh on it - yeah, right - I hadn't thought that one through.

What can we do with these shits?

TERM LIMITS!!!!! Ban the bastards from making a living out of us. No more than 3 parliaments (4 for Cabinet only) & NO promotion to the Lords/EU/Quango. Would clear out all the professional (sic) politicos who see a life troughing on the public tit as a SPAD, MP, MEP etc as a career.£100,000 election deposit placed with independent anti-sleaze monitor - forfeited if found guilty of new offense of "breaching public trust". Then pay them well - £250k - no expenses - to get the best to play.

Perhaps rather than resorting to the language of pigs (although that is probably unfair pigs) you should try and answer the questions I raised - or try and explain why they are not legitimate questions. Since when have two wrongs made a right?

anon 10.42,
common purpose refers to the transformational government project gordon brown is forcing through.
transformational government means the consolidation of power of the political classes over the voter.
anyone who uses the phrases common purpose and transformational government cannot be trusted by the electorate.
when you hear those terms think silver bullet and wall.

not voting is giving up to socialism.

Why do you think the socialists are able to affect our lives with out anyone seeming to vote them in? Its because they work on the idea of winner by default. Remove this concept through None of the Above and Libertarianism might have a chance!

If Dave put this option in his manifesto, Britain might have a future!

This stance shows total contempt for the electorate

Does Cambo honesty think we don’t know about Conway, the Wintertons, and Gideons funding attics?

This will be a disastrous idea, every time he tries to peddle it, he will be reminded about the above, in every interview given.

More contemptuous were Cambos comments at PMQ’s this week. He actually dismissed PMQ as a none event saying “””No one watches it anyway”””. Millions of people watch and listen to PMQs and every newspaper in the country has a comment to make on it.

Just because his last 3-4 performances have been abysmal, he tossed the whole event aside. Arrogance of the highest order.

Cambo is beginning to show his true colours, namely, a contemptuous over confident arrogance public school boy

While we all sincerely value your input I should like to point out a few small items.

We have found it best when trolling not to mention PMQ's as the PM is so bloody awful at it. I know he has got better and doesn't look like crying anymore but he is still bad..

Also as suggested earlier when we mention Conway we get back HAIN HARMAN ABRAHAMS ALEXANDER BROWN LEVY BLAIR...and on and on it goes. It is not a good point scorer for us.

However I am sure you will get the hang of it soon..

Also if I might trouble you to look at our finances. There are around 200 blogg commentators working in this office alone and we keep reading how little money the party has. Please could you Email out a reassurance that our wages will be paid.

Many Thanks

i agree more so in that david cameron is our only hope at having both democracy and our country back. see j redwoods class act blogg.

the moment spin was mastered domacracy was doomed , no need to make the case for anything, just fill everyones heads with either ,jordans tits, clarkson pissed drivng a car really fast, david beckham sat in a gold chair. It was all DA MIX , with DJ "snot goebels" brown .

But hey whats this some people want a referendum, some people want a say .

Labour pannick shit shit its not working , get more human rights shit going yeah "the little children" we need more emotive minority spin to fend this uprising off , then we can shift over to europe superstate without even a mumur.

whilst members of my family were taking topedos in the med and ecorting atlantic transports , they were fighting for me (the liitle children of then) to have the freedoms which we are granted under our british system . do you get it gordon they were fighting for there rights to be asked to be governed fairly and freely in way that builds a society.

you your party and your trolls wish to ake that right away from me and many other people of these isles , no need for me to make my mind up , nanny gordo knows best !

youve corrupted it all , the very instance you forced planning apps for your friends on our lands/countryside , wanted to fill our skies with more toxic air flights, allowed our seas to be fished to death . and the worse one is filled our heads with the sort of utter crap that dumbed us down to make your party look the glorious.

you didnt think we would dis agree , but somewhere in the british phsyce is somthing that stands for good in this country, not spin , not corruption . but somthing that demands the quality of governance that you ,your party or the EU are unable to raise your game to.

David Cameron is our last hope , because you and clegg words are useless proven failiure , i suspect mr cameron would hounour his and be as keen for others to honour theres.

there is no law, no bill of rights that will surpass that as the best a nation can be.

i will give mr cameron the chance , because my vote is worth somthing beyond being a conservative , somthing for ten years and more ntoicably in the last 12 months you have failed to grasp.

call that election if you dare !!
assuming that is you belive in democracy.

You seem to be in error, !tory boys never grow up"

There was no poster called "Foul Mouthed" at 1.08pm. There was, however, myself posting at that time.

And I invited you to fuck off, as I considered you to be a Labour Troll.

By whining in your response to my post: "Daddy! Daddy! That nasty man used swearage at me!" You have revealed yourself to be nothing more than a Labour Troll.

I could repeat my invitation to you to depart, but, frankly, that would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Or, as in the style of your Labour MPs (see various examples like Speaker Martin, the Watson clan, etc., etc.,) like shooting pigs in a sty.

You really are not helping your own cause. So please be my guest and continue to show yourself up as a Labour Troll. Oink! Oink! Run along now, porcinic one! I can hear the sound of the Swineherd trying his new hog call and the rattle of the stick in the swill bucket.

The main battleground at the next election will be the best use of tax payers’ money to fund public services. If David Cameron is a true conservative (note the small ‘c’) then his objective should be to ensure politicians concentrate on long-term strategic planning, which is what is currently missing from Government. Gordon Brown’s approach to interest rates was, ironically, the correct one and should be applied across all the spending departments: provide the professionals with clear goals - in the case of the Bank, keeping inflation below 2% - and let them get on with it. Ministers, who are essentially amateurs, should act as non-executive board members, providing strategic guidance and asking the tough questions, as opposed to being involved in day-to-day management. The job of MPs is then to scrutinise the Government’s strategic direction.

It will involve hiring professional business managers to run the spending departments. Because fewer politicians will be required, the funding for this can come from halving the number of Ministers and in a reduction by a third in the number of MPs. It will also have the beneficial effect of removing snouts from the trough, which will help re-build confidence in politics.

I hope Cameron has the necessary courage.

The non voting, no represented are by far the biggest section of the potential electorate. Include the minor parties adherents and the governing party would rarely have been elected by 1 in 3 people.
Two cheers for democracy

The original post was about Dave being in favour of transparency - so what is my "smokescreen" meant to be covering?

Oh come on Guido, you don't actually believe what you are writing do you?

Cameron proposed state funding of political parties in 2006 to completely insulate the political class from the people.

No-one on the side of the public would do such a thing.

Just when people are demanding real change to save us from the big state, we have an opposition leader who senses the change but proposes to actually make things worse for us, and easier for them!

M person of no fixed political abode said...

The fact that you are nowt but a Labour troll, old chap.

You seem amazingly silent on Hain, Wendy Alexander, the Scottish Industry Forum, the Newcastle problem, etc.

Yet you have a great deal to say about David Cameron.

Your attitude reminds me of the story of a couple of actor who enjoyed a long liquid lunch before a performance on stage.

When he staggered on stage a member of the audience said: "Get off! You are drunk!"

The actor swayed for several seconds before retorting: "If you think I'm drunk, just wait until you see the Duke of Buckingham!"

It is no defence to say: "We might be bad, but we bet the other lot are much more bad than us."

Chad said...

LoL. Come on Guido, your sock puppets can do better than that as you seek to convince us that the architect of state funding is on our side! rotfl.

Bla Bla Bla
1. Read the book "The Triumph of the Political Class" by by Peter Osborne to understand how corrupt and stuffed politics, the judiciary, the media and we are.
2. Visit http://www.mises.org/, to understand what an abortion our economy and politics are, why Socialism is insane, and why Libertarianism is sane and NOT new age. Understand that English Corporation Law must end corporate get-outs for externalisation and other criminal behaviours.
3. Get a grip and realise that we must defend our English cultural identity and England with fierce determination or else!
4. Chuck out the parasites and build a sane country.

Obviously the EU is a complete anathema, for any sane country.
