Time To Wave Goodbye Mr Speaker

The resignation of the Speaker's spin doctor over the "mis-briefing" of the £4,000 in taxi expenses for Mrs Speaker caps a bad week for Speaker Martin.

The charge-sheet is getting longer and the voices getting louder, if he had any sense he would stand down before a way is found to push him out. That he was involved in efforts to hide MP's expenses from Freedom of Information requests shows he is clearly the wrong person to lead parliament into a more open and transparent future. The revelation that the Speaker claims mortgage subsidy allowance for a property without a mortgage when he already lives in a grand manner at the public expense is a fiddle too far. This is an abuse fo the system which Martin has been using to featherbed his lifestyle and subsidise even his family's lifestyle. Time to say "goodbye" Mr Speaker...

I'm sure that Gorbals would not have been even considered for ANY 'governmental' job by Clem Attlee who at least had the guts to say to an ex-Minister why he was being fired:- 'Not up to the job'. A fitting quote to affix to Gorbals' tenure in the Chair. Replacements:- Alan Hazlehurst OR Gwyneth Dunwoody! Ming Campbell would have everybody snoozing in the aisles, and he could kark it in the Chair- would anybody notice?

Now is the time to say goodbye.
(Goodbye)

(Yield it, yield it)
Now is the time to wend our way-eee
Until we meet again-eee
Some sunny day.

Goodbye, goodbye, we're leaving you, skiddlydye.

Goodbye, goodbye, we're leaving you, skiddlydum.
Goodbye, we wish a fond goodbye, la-la-ta-ta-ta.

We leave this mortal coil on which we strut and fret our weary ways, as Shakespeare put it, God bless him. What a wonderful old chap Shakespeare was, bald but sexy.

Take that rhythm away with its wonderful melodies.
Oh, goodbye they say.

Goodbye, goodbye, we're leaving you goodbye,
Goodbye, we wish you all …. a fond …goodbye..

Too right we're putting out stories except for one thing - we're not making them up.

Advice - get back to your box on wheels and to your chairmanship (as of last month) of the Inelligence and Security Committee.

Re the Herald story.....
The £3.5m fraud, the £250,000 flat... and the deputy presiding officer. A senior Labour MSP helped her crooked son cash in on a lucrative Holyrood flat he bought months after defrauding his employers of £3.7million.

Deputy presiding officer Trish Godman purchased her son Gary Mulgrew's Edinburgh apartment for £250,000 in late 2006, after he had been extradited to Texas.

But Mulgrew, who was last week jailed for his part in an international fraud, had initially bought the property in full, without the need for a mortgage, shortly after embezzling millions of pounds in the Enron-linked scandal.

The revelation comes after Mulgrew and two other bankers, dubbed the NatWest Three, were each sentenced in a Houston courtroom on Friday to 37 months.

The trio of bankers had defrauded their former employers, NatWest, by persuading the firm to sell an Enron-related venture at a knock-down price of $1m.

They then left Natwest, bought a stake in the enterprise that had been sold, and offloaded it for $20million.

Mulgrew, 46, and his fellow fraudsters received around £3.7million between them, in mid 2000, cash they used to invest in businesses and property.

The Sunday Herald can reveal that one of Mulgrew's post-fraud investments was a flat at Holyrood Road in Edinburgh, yards from the Scottish Parliament.

Documents from Registers of Scotland show the Scot bought the property in mid 2001, months after receiving the proceeds from the dodgy deal. He paid £245,000 in full for the apartment, without requiring a mortgage.

The only standard security Mulgrew took out on the flat was two years later, in September 2003, which was after he had been charged by US prosecutors.

In November 2006, at a time when Mulgrew had been extradited to Texas on fraud charges, Trish Godman and her husband, former Labour MP Norman Godman, bought the property for £250,000.

Days later, in documents submitted at Houston's federal court, US prosecutors accused Mulgrew of trying to hide his wealth by transferring cash to his siblings, such as giving his brother $60,000 to buy a house in Australia.

The Godmans' purchase of their son's property came at a critical point for Mulgrew, as months before the sale he had to pay bail of $200,000 and was facing huge legal costs.

Earlier reports indicated that Mulgrew sold his £250,000 of shares in Celtic Football Club to get bail. He and his fellow fraudsters later pleaded guilty in 2007 to one count of wire fraud, a plea bargain the judge accepted on Friday.

Godman's role in helping her son financially is controversial due to the senior role she occupies at Holyrood.

As well as being the Labour MSP for West Renfrewshire, Godman is one of the Parliament's deputy presiding officers. She chairs debates and acts as an ambassador for Holyrood.

It has been claimed in earlier newspaper reports that Mulgrew had agreements to rent out his Holyrood apartment to his mother for £1000 but the Sunday Herald has no evidence to back up that claim.

Between 1999 and 2005, Godman was revealed to have been the biggest MSP claimant of hotel costs, claiming £23,000 despite living in Glasgow. She has not made any claims for hotels since purchasing the flat.

There is no suggestion that Godman did anything illegal but the affair is embarrassing for Scottish Labour as the party has made seizing the assets of criminals a top law and order priority.

In 2002, the Labour-led Scottish Executive passed the Proceeds of Crime Act, which drew up new powers of confiscation, civil recovery and taxation.

Godman did not return calls yesterday.

SNP MSP Alex Neil said: "Labour has got to clean up its act - it's one story after another. This is not just damaging Labour, but politics in general."

They just decided to lie themselves. Yeah. Right. Of course they did.

And as for Mrs S., well, Labour trolls are claiming it was a few bottles of perfume and a few miniatures of Scotch. But was it? Or was it carrier bags full? Or unopened boxes of the stuff?

I think this could have repercussions for other staff at the airline. Depending on the provenance of the stuff found at the house. (IE., 'left over' from a flight or boxes from a warehouse, for example.)

Of course there could be perfectly innocent explanations for both sets of charges against Mrs S.

I guess the reason that MPs are allowed to claim allowances for second homes on which there is no mortgage or rent to keep up, is because if the allowance was only permissible if covering actual outgoings then MPs would buy second homes with mortgages instead of owning anything outright, even if they had the capital to do so.

It's a shame that we can't trust 650 of supposedly our finest citizen-lawmakers to keep the interests of taxpayers first in their minds, and do all that's reasonably possible to minimise their expenses. Instead there are too many MPs who try to take us for all we're worth.

ANDREW MARR: I asked David Davis, I'll ask you. Michael Martin, is his speakership drawing unpeacefully to a close?

MARGARET BECKETT: I think it's really, I will confess Andrew that I don't fully understand this story that has appeared this morning. What, however, I do understand, and what is very clear, is that there has been a whole string of nasty little stories about and around Michael Martin.

Somebody is out to get him, whether they are, whether what they say is valid or is just somebody being out to get him I can't judge. There's a huge amount of paper on it in today's Sunday papers. There doesn't seem to me to be an enormous amount of content as opposed to comment.

ANDREW MARR: All right. Margaret Beckett, thank you very, very much indeed for coming in to join us.

When in the Cabinet and living at Admiralty Arch in a grace and favour flat, wasn't Beckett also claiming "Additional Costs Allowance" - for her property in Derbyshire (mortgage paid off years ago)? Believe she also owned a flat in London which was rented out - presumably for loads of cash. So what were her "additional costs"?

As for Blunkett, he was the man using public money to enable his then mistress to take the train for their weekend meetings - and said he thought he was entitled to it because they were "in a relationship"! Ignoring the fact that this particular allowance is for an MP's wife, not for someone else's wife he happened to be carrying on with.

And we're surprised these people are defending Michael Martin?

FROM THE SITE WITH THE GAELIC NAME ABOVE: 6.34pm

Last year, the Speaker hosted six dinners in state rooms at a cost of £10,869.33 and spent a further £44,216 on entertainment.

Mr Granatt, a partner at the Luther Pendragon PR agency, said he was stepping down as media adviser to the House of Commons Commission, the management committee that Mr Martin chairs.

He claimed, however, that Mr Martin was not to blame personally over the issue.

Mr Granatt said yesterday: "I have stepped down from my post for ethical reasons, because I misled a journalist unwittingly. It is core to the ethical code by which I and my company operate that I tell the truth, and that I am given the truth to tell.

"However, I learned on Friday that I had been led to mislead journalists over material facts in a story concerning the Speaker's household and the use of taxis. I have expressed my regrets to the journalist who brought this to my attention, and I offer them to anyone else who was similarly misled. I wish to make it clear that this arose through no fault of Mr Speaker."

Members from all sides feel that Mr Martin has failed to get a grip on the recent scandal over House of Commons expenses. Many MPs actively want him to step down.

having watched this story unfold and tread its weary way through the publics mind , spinning it as being a breech of the guidlelines (which quite a few of the older mps are supposed to do) rather than unlawful, and becketts gaff, that she didnt know about it and therefore we should deduce that its nasty campaign to oust him.

the red despot spotter is mindful of his most annoying speakers episodes over the last few years.
given as one anon mp said he was the worst speaker for 600yrs this is not just about expenses fiddles but somthing more to do with the esteem with which mps think he is doing the job.

i cannot recall of a speaker being villified as much, so i take this as guide that within the house there is a feeling that he is not doing the job as it should be.

of course he did shout at browns spad last year for erm shouting , next to his chair . but what galls the most in the publics eye during direct questions , despite protestations , he said "the prime minister will answer in his own way" !!

this practice has been going on for quite some time , of course under blair you got an answer that at least attempted to answer the honourable question posed and therefore some aspect of honour in our adviscerial form of goverment was maintained .

you can pictuure mr cameron asking six serious questions about the economy and gordon responding with "parsnips mr speaker parsnips" and him not saying a word about the pms responses.

this slight of hand , wether due to mr speakers metal fabrication background or somthing more to do with deft labour fraternalism in a time of trouble , is the matter .

mr speaker should be rounding on gordon like "a public lion" defending the ability of the house to debate for the benefit and service of the public.

it is clear he has little intention of upping the game when it is needed , as more of his parties deceptions are discovered . if mrs becket wishs to call this a "nasty campaign" she is entitled to do so , if mrs beckett wishes to let the house degenerate into , a childrens tea party , she will not be getting my vote.

a few weeks (longer if some tory mps are heeded) ago mr speaker was gently asked to consider standing down , no fuss , cheers alround , well done old chap etc etc . he declined . unfortuantely he did not realise what new times were emerging and is now caught in a trap of his owns parties abilities to up hold parlimentary standards. a call for for him to go is more about the service to the public and to debate , he is a bigger fool than i thought he thinks he will get off lightly trying to evade the nations requirements of parliment.

but he can always answer in his own way, "parsnips i say parsnips"

Her reward for such incompetence? Blair makes this useless bag carrying hag his Foreign Secretary. And she was shit at that job too, so what does Brown do? He puts her in charge of his Intelligence and Security Committee! So much for the terrorist threat..You couldn't make this shit up! We are surely being run by thieves and vagabonds.

It should be becoming a tad clearer why pigs go into politics. Of course it's not much different in other countries...and they all pale into insignificance when compared with the EU bureaucracy. The only difference is that our home-grown trough-snouters were empowered by a crassly stupid electorate while the EUSSR saddlebacks simply appointed each other.

I would say to those calling martin a useless cunt, he's not half as bad as beckett was during her time at Defra. She set new lows in an area where nulab has always prided themselves, pissing on the countryside.

John Spellar - Labour MP and full-time stupid cunt - was on Radio4 this morning trying to defend Pigsy Martins.

"Snobbery blah blah, no lawbreaking blah blah, I blame the press blah blah...."

These people are without shame. They think they are entitled to mountains of loot, yet half of them couldn't earn half as much in the competitive economy.

If Greedy Martins or Prick Spellar worked for Sainsbury's, does anyone believe they would be put in charge of a store?

And they do fuck-all in terms of national politics. Does Martins insist that the Executive is accountable to the legislature? Does Spellar give a shit if he does?

Your average MP does mainly case work - which is fair enough - and their salaries should therefore be benchmarked against salaries at the Citizens' Advice Bureau. End of!

listening to the same old list of Labour defenders, I am now thinking they have all been gorging themselves on the public purse for so long that they honestly don't believe they are doing anything wrong. They are utterly without morals and too thick to realise it.

What a fucking surprise Gory backs his mate up

What about the Observer's story that Dept of Health officials have made an average of 2 changes to Wikipedia per day from government computers?

I see that NuLab's little helpers, Brown's Broadcasting Corporation (previously know as Bliar'sBC) is putting out v strong support for little piggy Martin. No surprise there then. According to Nicola Clegg (LD leader in case you don't know who I mean) will not comment on what he says is a witch-hunt. Ha Ha How does it go?

Boil and bubble, toil and trouble....

You can hear the grunting and squealing and the scrape of trotters to get to the trough as fast as possible now.

New Labour is finished, but the pigs are going to stuff their fucking faces before they are put out to pasture - alas, slaughtering them is not on the agenda.

As a taxpayer, I want someone, anyone to go after the dishonourable gentlemen (and ladies) for every penny the fat, thieving, piggy, politico bastards have stolen from us.

I want my money back.

From what I could hear on the radio this morning, I gather the spin from Martin's Leftist chums is that this is all a conspiracy by Tory toffs who despise him because he used to be a sheet metal worker.

So I thought I would take a few minutes break from work to state that I, as a skilled and experienced sheet metal worker, think that the Speaker is a greedy, corrupt, partisan cunt. And if he does get fired, he needn't bother applying for a job here. I wouldn't trust him to fold a 90 degree angle in a sheet of 20 gauge without cocking it up.

Yes, George Foulkes has joined the list of usual suspect who have been stauchly defending this speaker. We had the misfortune of having him as our constituency MP until the last election and I exchanged correspondence with him on many occasions over topics as diverse as GM crops and Tony Blair's lies, evasions and manipulations of the truth in the run up to the war on Iraq. In every case George faithfully parotted the party line, never once answering a line of question and proving himself to be a servant of the Labour Party before a servant of the people of these Isles.

Wasn't George Foulkes the MP who backed up Thomas "Dunblane Massacre" Hamilton's efforts to get a gun licence? Great judgement there, too.

So the Rocky Horror show regect Margeret Becket thinks the thieving of gorballs mick and his greedy wife is just a nasty little story, which just about sums New Labour up, nose and trotters in the trough slobber all you can and the moment any thing appears to threaten the gravy train up with the smoke screen. As for Gorballs doing a good job that ranks with Hitler being given the Nobel peace prize. Wake up Beckett, open the caravan door and smell the coffee your collective greed is all being exposed
