A contrary view is that it would be a far bigger scandal for Northern Crock to do nothing if people default on their mortgage.
As a stakeholder in this business (albeit an unwilling one), I would prefer a policy of snatch-backs.
The action in the Minnikin matter is likely to have started some time ago.
What will be interesting in the coming months is whether a hard line policy is maintained in the event of a default or whether Zanu Labour interests in preserving the sunny north east as a land of socialist milk and honey and where potential voters are to treated with kid gloves.
I can see the argument now for a softly softly approach....not a good time to repossess..blah blah, falling house prices blah blah....better let them live there foc than have to board them up blah blah.
It will also be interesting to see if the policy on repossessions is applied consistently across the country.

A "prudent" bank only advances 90% of valuation as a maximum and 3-4 times income subject to proof(Never touch over 100% and never never never allow a customer to self certificate income particularly when the property market is at the top.)It's a well known fact that if you allow the "salesmen" in the organisation to manage your book you will get spectacular growth for 2/3 years but also an equally spectacular write off rate. Rich jon et al of your ilk, none of us knows the circumstances of Mr. Minnikin's repossession, other than that he (and perhaps his family) are being thrown out of their home for defaulting on their mortgage.
There are umpteen everyday reasons why this might have happened without it being foreseeable or being anyone's 'fault' e.g. family breakdown, illness, death of a partner etc. Sure, you might be able to take out insurance, if you are eligible, but very often such policies are worthless - the first thing the c*nts do is go through your medical files looking for any excuse not to pay out, which is why many people, sensibly, don't waste their money on such a dodgy bet.
At the end of the day, while repossessions are a necessary part of life, it ill behoves us as a society that an arrogant shit such as yourself should be so disparaging of a family that you know nothing about at this time of personal tragedy.

Northern Rock will most probably hasten the approaching serious house price crash. They're going to start running down their mortgage business to start paying back the taxpayer. They will do this by upping their interest rates.
Approx 20% of the mortgage supply market will disappearing in the very near future - this has been Northern Rock's share. Not only will there be 20% less mortgages to go round, the other banks now have less competition and can increase the IRs they are demanding.
As the mortgage market collapses, prices will collapse as demand is a function of mortgage availability.

I had a Northern Crock mortgage for close on twenty years and during that time I was threatened with repossession twice due to redundancy and ill health. They added thousands in 'mortgage arrears admin fees'. At one point they charged me £150 per month for being 1 month behind in my payments. I like to think their current problem stem from the curse I placed on them a few years ago. But in reality I now know they're just greedy northern shits who deserve everything they're going to get. Trouble is, silly taxpaying sods like me will pick up the bill at the end.
Had Darling and co. had any sense, they have suspended all applications for repo for a period of one month for "review" as a good PR stunt.

The world has changed for repossessions since nationalisation.
When Northern Rock was private it could repossess houses simply because the borrowers hadn't paid their mortgage.
Public bodies such as the Police, the Department of Transport and now Northern Rock can't take your house off you without complying with the Human Rights Act. Public authories have to show respect for a person's home. That is why councils have lengthy policies for when they may and may not evict council tenants.
