"Auschwitz Gimmick" Jibe Backfires

CCHQ put out a press release listing 26 Brown gimmicks including under the heading "Trips to Auschwitz"
What was announced: ‘Two pupils from every sixth form and college in the country will be able to visit Auschwitz and learn about the Holocaust thanks to £4.65 million of funding’ (DCSF press release, 4 February 2008)
In fact schools would have to find £100 to fund every sixth-former’s trip (Times, 4 February 2008)
Ed Balls pounced on it and press released:
"This is a truly disgraceful remark by David Cameron and he should apologise immediately for the offence he has caused. Anyone who has seen the horrors of Auschwitz at first hand knows what a life-changing experience it is. To call the announcement I made of £4.65 million to fund visits by school children over the next three years a 'gimmick' just beggars belief. In trying to make this issue into a matter of party politics, David Cameron has shown once again that he not only lacks judgement but also a basic sense of decency."
Aside from the fact that it is not a remark by Dave, but in the notes of a CCHQ briefing, there is obvious irony in Blinky criticising the Tories for "trying to make this into a matter of party politics" in a Labour Party press release.

The Tories now say that they support the educational Auschwitz trips and that they would fully fund them via the Lottery fund. Whatever the substance of the matter, somebody is going to get a bollocking for the original press release...

Perhaps the children should be sent to kossavo a Serbian country but ethnically cleansed by the albanian Muslims of it`s Serb people. With the help of the EU and Germany!

It is perfectly obvious from the press release what the Conservatives meant (i.e. it wasn't free). So who's trying to make the issue into a matter of party politics now, eh Blinky?

I thought the (v bad taste) joke was that the Government wanted to send two pupils from every sixth form to Auschwitz...

Still, Hitler was a national SOCIALIST......

Anonymous said...

Loking at this closely, surely the Tories mean the gimmick is the in not-quite-full funding of the trip, rather than the trip itself.

Come on. Rapid rebutal for Mr Balls.

I wonder why the most barbaric mass slaughter of people commited by the communist USSR (60 million) and communist China never take priotity in Labours socialist/communist brainwashing school system?

This merely confirms to me that Ed Balls is a shit-stirring hypocritical, turd.

The government's announcements should always be treated with suspicion; in this case the Tories are quite correct to point out that the government's 'promises' always turn out to be not-entirely-honest.

That Balls then effects mock indignation and accuses Cameron of playing politics by, er, making a party political issue out of it, smacks of humbug, not to mention sheer desperation.

Balls is a disgusting little cretin who deserves nothing but contempt and very public disgrace. And they say this ineffable little nerd is leadership material?

either fund the visits or don't fund them. the reason you did this was so you could claim an artificially higher number of visits to auschwitz.
then to accuse the opposition of a lack of decency when they are merely hi-lighting this fact is I believe, an offensive misuse of the memory of those who suffered so terribly at the hands of hitler in auschwitz aswell as in the other death camps.

I suppose if kids were taught British history and could read there would be no need to send them to see for themselves.

Sorry, this is bollocks.... why shouldn't the Auschwitz trip be included as an example of a gimmick.

The DCSF chose to make it the subject of a press release, and therefore to try to win brownie points on the back of the Holocaust.

Ed Balls display of synthetic anger is pathetic and I'm surprised Guido is giving it airtime.

Why don't they arrange trips to the battlefields where our own British troops gave their lives in both world wars, such as the Somme, Paschendale and the Normandy beaches.
of course its possible to visit Auschwitz for genuine reasons - but that is not NuLabour's way. Sending school children in recent years is a not very cleverly disguised political gimmick.

Id said...

The thing is that there was nothing offensive about the original briefing. It merely stated that, as usual, Nu-Liebour was promising more than it delivered - gimmicks, if you will.

It is the slimy, revolting, incompetent arseholes in Nu-Liebour who used the most offensive defence possible by accusing the Tories of anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, whatever the fuck helps the current (mis-)government of the day detract from a very reasonable criticism of their failure to deliver so much as a fucking bean by way of improvement to peoples' lives.

Promises, spin and deceit is all they can practice.

Balls, you are a cunt and your wife looks like she's got something else instead of one. Get a fucking grip and fuck off out of office along with the rest of the lying, stealing, corrupt bunch of Nu-Liebour fucktards.

Anyone who has seen the horrors of Auschwitz at first hand knows what a life-changing experience it is.

Anyone who has seen the horrors of Auschwitz first hand had their lives changed by being gassed, shot, starved, experimented on, fucked, worked or tortured, usually to death. A few saw it first-hand at liberation. Some saw it first hand by performing the above, which is presumably not what Balls had in mind.

Every other tourist, historian, memorializer, and even returnee sees it second hand. The event has stopped, although the location remains. Does pig-ignorant Blinky acutally think he has 'been' to Auschwitz just because he has visited the place?

He'll be wittering about seeing the horrors of the Crucifiction first hand next.

He is a deluded freak, as deluded as his master. If he honestly thinks there a difference between the earlier tattooing of a number on an arm, and his own government's proposals which explicitly follow the data collection methods developed by you-know-who, then he had better think again.

The racial profiling databases predicated on the school and NHS records of almost every child will mean that when we do get a fascist government again, it will have the tools the old debil could only dream of. Thanks a bunch, NuLab.

It is lucky that comment moderation is on. The man is a wanker and if he ever comes near me, I may choke the self-absorbed swine from the wrong end with a railway sleeper.

And so, with a scam policy followed by a few cynically chosen words, Balls exposes himself as one of the biggest shysters in the land.

Given the trick behind the funding of the Auschwitz trips, calculated to make sure that almost no-one actually went, does anyone even believe that Balls had the money available?

Then today's words from him are the icing on the cake, classic calculation, distraction and distortion.

Balls - rot in hell!

The logic behind the gimmick seems to be:

A: Most people disapprove of the Holocaust

B: Labour disapproves of the Holocaust

C: Therefore most people approve of Labour

Trouble is, a lot of Labour's efnick postal block-voters in rust-belt shit-holes probably think the Holocaust was a bit too lenient.

To paraphrase Mr Balls, "anyone who has seen the horrors of Britain under Labour at first hand knows what a life-changing experience it is."

Where else could one be jailed for thoughts not deeds, and for identifying the lies disseminated by an increasingly totalitarian government.

Criticism of immigration policy was denounced as racism: criticism of lies over the funding of school trips is now denounced as belittling one of the most tragic episodes of 20th century history.

Methinks Mr Balls betrays but his own lack of morals and decency.

The Tories have committed blasphemy and will have to repent, as those saintly figures Ed Balls and Denis MacShane have pointed out. I for one want ALL British children to be sent on these guilt trips to learn what European civilization is really about: utter, unspeakable horribleness towards poor persecuted minorities. The trips should be yearly, in fact, and should start in primary school. Better still, while children are still in the womb. Anyone who disagrees is a nazi -- just ask Ed and Den.

Katyn Forest is a wooded area near Gneizdovo village, a short distance from Smolensk in Communist Russia where, in 1940 on Stalin's orders, the NKVD shot and buried over 4000 Polish service personnel that had been taken prisoner when the Communist Soviet Union invaded Poland in September 1939 in WW2 in support of the Nazis.

So nasty in fact that no visit to the camp now, could possibly convey the true or even partial truth of it.

It helped if you could speak German and could do something of use for the Germans. He was in fact personally treated relatively well. Because he spent his time making Nazi jewellery. Very possibly out of his own dead families gold teeth.

hilarious apology from Mail on Sunday to Tory MP!
MAIL ON SUNDAY WITHDRAWS ALLEGATION OF IMPROPRIETY

I am pleased to be able to confirm that the Mail on Sunday has accepted that I have not abused an allowance available to MPs to purchase the second home they must have to enable them to live both in or near their constituencies and in London.

An article in last week's paper (10th Feb) claimed that i had used this allowance to fund the purchase of a terraced property in Worcester that I then let out. this allegation was completely without foundation and the newspaper has today (17th Feb) published the following letter from me, setting the record straight:

"Regarding your article "Revealed: 'MPs' buy-to-let scheme funded by the taxpayer'", at no stage have I let out any property on which I have claimed Additional Costs Allowance. I bought a flat in Kennington eight years ago, and I still live in it.

"The small terraced property in Worcester you listed against my name is fully and properly declared in the Register of Members' Interests. I purchased it some eighteen years ago and lived in it prior to my election to Parliament. I am still paying off the mortgage entirely out of my own resources. Any suggestion that I have misused taxpayers' money is both offensive and wrong."

Its clearly taboo to call an obvious gimmick a gimmick.

"The holocaust" version of history (the term wasn't widely used till the 1970's) is a version that regards the suffering of one group as pre-eminent to the neglect of all the others.

There were several years of concentration camps before the Nazis started murdering jews purely because they were jewish, and more Soviet civilians died than did jews. To my mind to have 'the Holocaust' take on the Nazis crimes is to buy into the same racist delineation that the Nazis themselves made.

And a political lobby group isn't necessarily the best judge of history or how our children should study it. But saying that's taboo of course...

Splashitallover said...

Guido, come on. This is the Tories being a bunch of wankers. They tried to make capital out of the Holocaust. They struck out.

Special pleading. If children are to be sent anywhere we should consider the Jersey War Tunnels.

The museum uses the cold tunnels to tell the story of the war and what it means to be an occupied territory. It covers all groups - the islanders, the people deported, the slave labour imported, and the occupiers. Thanks especially to the dedicated work of the late Joe Miere, it does so in a detailed way, reclaiming every individual name possible from history.

The Occupation of the Channel Islands is a chilling story because it does not duck the issue of collaboration but faces the charge that whilst some people were beaten in to submission, others required very much less coercion to sell-out their countrymen as a means of settling petty scores.

The exact methods of increasing control are examined, and how they were used for PR effect within Germany. The Channel Islands were used to suggest that British people were willing to capitulate and to deceive the German people in to thinking that the occupation was further advanced than it actually was.

The museum is particularly relevant to children because it contains records and memorials to the teenagers who died trying to escape, or defied the authorities and were punished for it. It takes a minimum of three hours to go through the tunnels, where the weight of the rock and earth embody the weight of the malignant state.

Important though Auschwitz is, it is not necessarily the right place to begin to teach British children about their modern history.

The Jersey War Tunnels, however, show the story of what can happen to the ordinary subjects of Her Majesty - very ordinary most of them: farmers, fishermen, shopkepers, school children - under the heel of a foreign force.

He does not know the meaning of integrity and decency except as useful weaknesses in his opponents. He is capable of ANYTHING to further his own advance to total power.

This dark and sinister individual is currently playing the role of Martin Bormann to Führer Brown - but in actual fact is just using him and waiting for his opportunity.

He has the mindset of a totalitarian and should be kept away from any political power at all costs, as he will misuse it for his own personal purposes.

This person is not a democrat and is very, very dangerous. You have been warned.

I wonder how many books £4.65million buys?

And an even more shocking question - I wonder how many books £4.65million buys - that is about a period of history that doesn't involve Stalin and the Nazis.

I can't help feeling that something is going wrong with the teaching of history, since supposedly it is meant to teach people the errors of the past - yet here we have a petite bourgeouis government with weird racial poliicies and principles, a creed based on health and fitness driven by doctors, a policy of actively villifying and marginalising the mentally ill and it all being funded by a few wealthy industrialists - one wonders if the trips to Auschwitz are some kind of training exercise?

The way that anything that the Conservatives say against the government is either a "gimmick" or "political opportunism" is getting a bit of a bore.

If the Conservatives found that Broon or Darling had transferred most of the UK currency reserves (if we have any) into his personal numbered Swiss bank account then Labour would accuse them of political opportunism.

They don't seem to understand the purpose of an opposition party in government.

Second thoughts, it would be too complicated for Darling to manage.

No doubt the kids will be told (repeatedly) that the EU is the real and only protector against a return of evil.

I guess it is just more of the usual mindbending indoctrination. Make sure easily influenced kids support the EU. It has been going on for years now. March of the Brain-Dead.

As a mother of two teenagers, I don't go for this "they must see Aushwitz to understand" nonsense. It is a gimmick.

And why do schoolkids need to have Nazi Germany in their syllabus for year after year till they're so bored with it that they become numb?

Don't waste money ferrying them across Europe. Use the education system to teach kids to think for themselves - now that IS a revolutionary idea in today's schools.

Charges of "opportunism" would get nowhere if the BBC did not repeat it with delight and solemn face, along with all Labour's slogans against the Tories.

The BBC are distorting all politics; when will people not bloody well wake up to what they are doing?

mb @ 12:30 what you fail to realise is that Nu-Liebour truly believe - not just think, not just plain belief but deep down, through to their bones BELIEVE - that they are right in everything they do and that therefore anyone who disagrees with them or highlights their failings/incompetence/corruption/deceit (choose those you think appropriate to a particular example)is guilty of "politcal opportunism".

There IS and can be only one approach and it is theirs. Anyone else is either sadly deluded/politically incorrect/failing to realise that politics is dead and Nu-Liebour are the one-party government for the rest of all time.

Guardian article this morning:
Government wants personal details of every traveller: Phone numbers and credit card data to be collected under expanded EU plan

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/feb/23/uksecurity.terrorismandtravel

Well, the legislation is just about in place for the Police State.

Is there anyone who will take an effective lead to stop this? Many would follow such a person. History will condemn this generation of soft, effete careerists allowing this to happen in front of our very noses.

I heard that stupid Polish fuck Macshane on the radio this morning. The cack brained retard does not even know how to pronounce the word Auschwitz, much less say anything of any interest on the subject. He's just a bladder on a stick filled with Grim Gordon's fart gas. And if you're reading this Denis you fucking imbecile, it's pronounced Auschwitz with a "sh", not Auss-witz. Got that shit for brains?

I also heard that fuckwitted weasel McNulty. The daft cunt hasn't got the brains of a squashed hedgehog. Apparently the half million innocent people on the DNA database should be happy, because it will protect them from false accusations, therefore there are no plans to extend these benefits to the other fifty million innocent people in the UK. It's tragic that they shut down the mental hospitals, this dimwitted fuck could have had a useful life basket weaving instead of trying to make sense of the papers with big words in that red box they keep giving him to take home every night.

anon 12.29,
it was the labour party and ed balls who politicised and personalised the issue. try and keep up.

anon 4.32,
you are quite correct ofcourse.
tony mcnulty is a complete spastic.
I'm not sure whether denis macshane is an even bigger spastic because he is so very mentally retarded but mcnulty is such a useless and pompous oaf of a cunt that I would say on balance he is a slightly bigger spastic than macshane.
it could even be possible that tony mcnulty maybe one of the biggest spastics in england.
well done tony!
you wanker.

Obviously such trips are to show the school children EXACTLY which direction the UK is heading under New Labour, what with CCTV surveillance, ID cards, and stealing DNA and fingerprints, and the deliberate loss of your private data, there's only one way it's all going to end up, all thanks to New Labour and their Commie friends in Europe.

Any one of the comment makers in this thread could have shown CCO how to make an effective response to the ridiculous attacks by Balls and the media. So the real problem for the Tories is that they have no ability to make effective, rapid responses to obviously crass criticism.....they are indeed in trouble.

As for the Balls policy, it's a gimmick all right. I teach history in a state school and I've not heard much about this wonderful new fund. Even if I had, what on earth use is it to send just two pupils to Auschwitz?? Everything this idiot says has party political gimmick written all over it, and I can't wait for him to leave Schools and go back to the Treasury. won;t be long now I guess...

Oh, balls to Balls and his deranged ideas and half-baked notions!

Every sane person in the country can see that this is a gimmick. I'm Jewish - and not only do I think it's a gimmick - but an offensive gimmick. It's pretty sick of Balls to use Auschwitz in this manipulative way. If the British people are taken in by this crap then there really is no hope for the country. But I sincerely don't think the vast majority will be.
