The damning poll in the Sunday Times this morning reinforces Guido's view (expressed at some length here) that Darling is the fall guy for Brown and Balls. Darling will be blamed for their mess, Balls will be shuffled in to "resuscitate" the economy just before the election in the hope that it will by then be out of the worst and Balls will be in a position to succeed Brown whether Labour win or lose the general election.So they will need Darling to suffer meekly for another 2 years...

The last peasants revolt in this country more then ended in disaster. It also ended with its leader getting his head sliced in two by close members of the kings own bodyguard. Which were in those days his best mates.

Apart from Northern Ireland, the north-east of England is the part of Britain that gets most of it's income from the public purse. Even more per head than Scotland!
British taxpayers contribute over 75% to the income of the north-east so that smug, labour voting Geordies and Mackems can sit around in cushy offices doing fuck all all day for £20 to £50 grand a year.
The rest of them, too idle to even get a cushy public non-job, claim benefits to the equivalent of a gross wage of £20 grand or more.

Having such a large public sector here means that the private sector has to compete for half-educated semi-literate types (and they are the good ones)with the many thousands of public non-jobs offering reasonable pay for little work, final salary pension schemes (unfunded) and long holidays. It is no surprise that the Government of the North East employs a huge swathe of middle management on cushy terms, such that the private sector is like its acronym, G.O.N.E.. The brightest Geordies tend to leave the region, so the ones that are here either are too thick to hold down a job elsewhere or are careworn returnees who want an easier life. Most high-level professional positions in law, medicine and accounting are held by outsiders. However, Broon's divide and muddle tripartite banking regulation and the delay and dithering in deciding the Crock's future are to their discredit.
