The whole Labour Party leadership campaign funding saga is turning into a farce, with the revelation that even Gordon Brown broke his own party's donation rules.

Guido has checked the Electoral Commission website, his campaign lists 21 donations amounting to £196,700 and 3 non-cash donations totaling £19,005, giving a total of £215,705 altogether.

Under the Labour Party's own rules he must pay 15% of the campaign funds raised into central party funds. Gordon, unlike all the other candidates, has not paid any funds over to the party according to the Electoral Commission. He should have paid £32,355. All the other candidates, including even Peter Hain, made their payments months ago. We know Gordon says he isn't an accountant, but does he have the minimal competence required of a party leader, to ensure his campaign follows the party's own rules? No wonder why he allows Wendy Alexander, Harriet Harman and Peter Hain to cling to office despite their breaking the rules, he is no different...

UPDATE : Dizzy has spotted something interesting. Remember Silverfish buying up websites like gordonbrownforbritain.com "speculatively"? Of course they all ended up, despite earlier denials, being used by Brown's campaign. Did Silverfish get properly paid or did they, as many believe, give it all as a benefit in kind? If the latter, where are the declarations to the Electoral Commission?

He should have £32.355

Surely that can't be right?

Back off Guido.

How dare you question my abilities and competence. I have a cunning plan. I will be announcing another 5 year plan on Monday.

Since 1979 we have MORE people in work, LOWEST inflation for 500 years, RECORD tractor production ratios and have WON every war whilst in power.

Excuse me whilst I extract another Bogey.

mmmmm Nice and chewey.

Who'd like a bet that this will be used as a perfect excuse to push through taxpayer funding for the (chosen) parties?

You have to hand it to blair, he may be a worthless cunt, but he was a pretty good judge of when the wheels would finally and irevocably come off the wagon !

Somebody's gotta take the rap and be thrown to the wolves over this fiasco and it sure as hell won't be Gordon. Hain is "Dead Man Walking" especially if the "Sundays" turn up any more "oversights"

backwoodsman said...

Oh, if there was NO leadership campaign, where did the £215,705 get spent ?
Has it been returned to the donors ? Surely it would be inapropriate to keep the money - has it been returned ?
Otherwise people might be tempted to put their name forward for elections, just as wheeze to collect unacountable donations, erm , like hain for example !

The announcement that Northern Rock is to be nationalised will be made this week. The taxpayers are stuck with this crock of shit. What a fucking mess Brown has made of it.

It's true, it's crap, and noone cares. People just aren't shocked by corruption in politics, it seems.

Brilliant. A 15% levy on fundraising. These Labour wankers are priceless, they even tax each other.

When the NuLab vermin take a day off from their corruption then that really will be news worth reporting.

Excuse me, but why doesn't HMQ take a stand and fire ministers who are 'misbehaving'? After all, it's HER government! I suspect people would support HMQ doing this!

Backwoodsman - that is a very good point :)!

Peter Hain is toast IMHO

Obviously,as Gordo will point out at PMQs next week,it's all the fault of the previous Tory government,he'll then go on to spout his list of NuLab "achievements" while baying idiots cheer as he does so.British politics, what a farce,is it any wonder the Taliban e.t.c. fight so hard to avoid "democracy"?

Hain statement delayed til 2.00-2.30. more covering up? or has Gordo made the call and its all over for the vile orange cunt

Hain has delayed his statement until 14:30. I wonder why...

Backwoodsman 12:14. Will Cameron ask "where's the money?" at PMQs.

Fat chance

why, when it is clear that Hain has broken the LAW, are the police not involved? The electoral commission do not decide what is lawful in this country, the courts do. The police must be involved ASAP

Treasury lines up new Rock boss

The Treasury has recruited the former boss of Lloyd's insurance market, Ron Sandler, to lead Northern Rock, should the troubled bank be nationalised.
A decision could be taken within days, says BBC business editor Robert Peston.

According to bankers close to the Rock, the Treasury has a fully developed plan to own and manage the bank, should a commercial solution be impossible.

Mr Sandler is widely regarded as having restored confidence in Lloyd's after its years in financial disarray.

The BBC has learned that Mr Sandler would become executive chairman of Northern Rock in the event that the troubled bank is fully nationalised.

The former boss of Lloyd's of London is well known to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and worked for the Treasury in developing the so-called stakeholder pension and investment products that were intended to help those on lower incomes save for retirement.

Last night I watched Caligula - an excellent performance from Malcolm McDowell et al. Then, I was struck by the similarities between him and our very own Snotgobbler Ceaser. Both treat the public and Senate / Parliament with contempt, both are morally depraved, both are financially incompetent, both believe themselves to be divine. I could go on but I think you get the drift.
The question is, who is our own Snotgobbler's Incitatus?

Anonymous said...

Could the delay be because Hain has threatened to bring others down with him if he is fired? This would cause the bogeymeister to have one of his famous long dithering thinks.

The 15 per cent troubles me. So 15 per cent of monies raised will go to Labour. THAT'S money laundering! Labour is receiving money from a third party. ie Mr Smith gives money to Hazel Blears who gives it to Labour. Mr Smith is down on the lists as a Hazel supporter, not a Labour supporter, but his money has gone to the party. How is this not money laundering?

Rob said...

Northern cRock should be in Administration not nationalisation.

NR didn't have many depositors, so it would be much cheaper.

The shareholders should get nothing! This farce has gone on far too long.

potty tawnbee said...

This would never have happened if all political parties were state funded.

I blame Lord Ashcroft.

Yak40 said...

So if the Rock is nationalised will shareholders get compensated or will it be like Railtrack - a nationalisation like Stalin's grab of Russian railways or similarly like nationalisations by any third world tinpot dictator ?

Labour came to power promising to be "purer than pure". In a way they are achieving this, distilling and purifying sleaze and turning it into an art form. Impurities are quickly discarded lest they dilute the mix - where are the likes of Frank Field now, Gordon? He isn't sleazy. He isn't in the cabinet either. Spot the connection.

Hain - " I will get on with cabinet jobs" 5 and half hours of prevarication and putting off his expected statement to say basically "I've done nothing wrong and have apologised" so **** off.

Yet another Labour Minister who feels that they are above the rules that govern the "proles"

Anonymous said...

So comical to see him doing his statement from what seemed to be a park...

Thats probably the reason there was such a delay, Gordo wouldn't let him use any of the NuLab facilities... or maybe Gordo et al are in the bunker and cannot be reached...

Gareth said...

Shouldn't Hain have been making statements to the House about this, rather then the media?

Any contribution to Labour from Jon Cruddas (should be around £21k) has yet to appear as well.

Good point,Hain not only knows "where the bodies are buried" but also who's body has been buried in who else's.

Oh good.
He's staying. The danger was that he'd go and all the fuss and recriminations would allow this bunch of mendacious twats to claim to have cleared up the mess... one bad apple... nothing more to see.... vote for strongman Gordon... and all the rest of the spinners shit.

Not now.
The MSM are gonna be pissed, they've been denied their scalp, it ain't just gonna be the political blogs doing the digging from now on. Not that Gordon had much option - if one goes, the dam's liable to crumble and wash away others too, and besides, NuLab are such a talentless bunch of arseholes, there aren't any credible replacements.

Sorry Peter - not good enough. You'll have to do better if you want to stay in office.

I hate all of them.

Does this slimey bastard have no shame?

"I make no apology for being a committed candidate in Labour's deputy leadership campaign or for raising the funds necessary to run a modern campaign"

The man makes me almost physically ill.

Great for Gordo that he expresses his full confidence in the twat - speaks volumes does that.

Because then it might blow up in their faces. They will want the police to do it all on their own, as opposed to being caught calling the coppers on their political opponents. That said, even if the police did take some steps, I wonder if anything would happen since they seem to be an extension of the fucking Labour party these days.

How did Gordo blow the huge donations he got for a leadership contest that never happened. Was Mel Brooks ,the comic author of The Producers, his inspiration?

Can fellow Scot, Lord Alexander (sandy to his fellow nobs) Leitch expect a substantial refund?.

Oh, well spotted Guido.

I am boggling slightly at the thought that Oor Anointed King *had* a leadership campaign in the first place. What does all that money go to do in a competition where there's no...competition?

"Och, ye bunch o' fuckin' eejits, how many times have I got tae tell ye, it's 'do as I say, nae do as I do!' Alexander, grab the brush! Harman, lift the carpet! Hain... bend over."

Guido,

You say that "All the other candidates, including even Peter Hain, made their payments months ago."

This raises an interesting question - how much did he pay? Either Hain paid about 12,000 - on his earlier claims of having raised 80,000, or he paid about 27,000 - on the 180,000 he actually raised.

Either amount suggests interesting lines of investigation to pursue. If he paid 27,000, then it shoots down in flames Hain's claims to forgetting the donations, if he paid 12,000, then someone needs to push the Labour Treasurer into demanding a cheque for 15,000 from Hain.
