The view of Guido's readers is clear, Derek Conway's financial arrangements are unacceptable. If Cameron does nothing, it is a case of accepting politics as usual. Fiddling thousands of pounds off the taxpayers to finance your son's education is not acceptable. Lawmakers can not be law breakers.

Cameron has the power to withdraw the whip from Conway, his constituency party have the power to withdraw their support for him as a candidate. What is it to be?

Incidentally, do you think we will see articles from Sir Michael White et al explaining that it is a trivial amount of money? Will we see those who have been writing apologia on behalf of Hain, Harman, Johnson and Wendy Alexander doing the same for Derek Conway? Don't hold your breath...

Absolutely Guido!

Were these various pounds mentioned on expenses, and to whom were they justified?

Who checked the job done by his son?

Who audited the outlay?

Who submitted the tax returns?

Who payed the tax?

Why do people like me get furious when we remember John Major mucking about in the same way?

It's bad enough knowing about the sleaze in Gordon Brown's lot, but this just breaks the fantasy doesn't it!

We'll never get rid of the Unpublic Scroungers if we tolerate such awful behaviour.

bad news, folks...
The Police aren't interested.
MPs pay and expenses come under parliamentary privilege, and are subject to the doctrine of “exclusive cognisance”, which in a nutshell means...

if an MP wants to rob and fiddle his allowances and expenses, there is not a plod or a court in the land that can do anything about it….

Let's pull no punches. What we saw today was the House of Commons conniving in a smash-and-grab committed by one of its own Members...

There must be mileage now in someone setting up a National Anti-Sleaze Party to contest every seat at the next election…

WTF happened to Bell?

Cameron has to sack him.

That Iain Dale is being very silent on this one. He really ought to express his views, lest one think he was a slimy little hypocrite. Could it be because Conway is another of David Davis' cronies?

He should have sacked him after Conway made his apology to the house this afternoon. That would have given Cameron the moral highground.

Cant decide between Mancester city centre with gangland protection rackets, the high chance of being shot or stabbed or just jumped by a gang and kicked to fuck, or alternatively I could chance a gallon or two in the private members bar at Westminster. Ben Brogan, Political Editor of the Daily Mail, gets it right over at his blog:

"I defy anyone reading this report not to conclude that Mr Conway is guilty of behaviour that is incompatible with being an MP. MPs frequently complain when we report critically their habit of voting themselves pay rises and extra allowances. Yet here we have an example of MPs standing by when one of their number pulls a fast one on the taxpayer. I have reason to believe that the revelations about Mr Conway are about to get worse, which will then leave Mr Cameron facing some difficult choices."

The next time David Cameron rises at PMQs to attack sleaze within the Government Labour MPs will only have to shout 'Derek Conway' back at him to blunt his attack. Unlike Brown Mr Cameron did not dither. He needed just a few hours to decide what to do about Mr Conway. He was decisive but decisively wrong.

bebopper said...

He should do the decent thing or Cameron should withdraw the whip. I've said as much on Iain's blog.
Iain's embarrassed because Conway is a friend. Conway is also a friend of David Davis.
Conway shouldn't take advantage of his friends' loyalty. He should go, before Cameron has to do the necessary.

Today is probably the last day of grace remaining for Cameron.

Withdraw the whip from Conway and signal a fresh start in politics.

The population want shock waves to be felt among the political class. Here is a chance to send one and begin to change the political culture towards 'honesty being the only policy'.

To be a leader needs balls, and not of the 'Ed' kind...i.e. spin is not enough.

You've talked the talk, Dave, now walk the walk.

Today - do it. Never mind the complaints from MPs. They will quieten down when they see that honesty is a vote winner.

Whisper in the ear said...

Barclay bare said:

"Conway should not have done it, but let's not pretend it is the same as Hain.

Sorry, but that's not good enough.

It is for people on the left to make excuses for dishonesty, and to play down the breaking of the trust we voters put in the people who frame our laws.

In a way, it is a shame that Conway will end up being the first sacrifice along the road to honest politics, but you have to start somewhere, and the sooner the better.

Those MPs who are doing a similar thing but manage to keep out of the spotlight should consider desisting immediately, and even perhaps come forward of their own volition to 'sort things out'.

Honesty. It is expected of the people by the law. The people expect it of the lawmakers. It's time to sort it out.

Cameron will be left far stronger in the eyes of the electorate if he acts decisively today.

If he doesn't... then he does not deserve to be prime minister.
