Charity Commission Warns Ken Backing "Charities"
The Charity Commission has rapped a dozen Muslim charities for supporting Ken Livingstone's bid to be re-elected as Mayor of London. They wrote a letter which was posted on the Guardian's CiF a few weeks back (3 January).
It read: “We the undersigned believe that it is in the best interest of the Muslim communities of London, and indeed all Londoners, to back Mr Livingstone in this year’s mayoral elections.” The Commission received several complaints that the letter breached charity law, which forbids charities from supporting political candidates or parties.The Commission says: “We have written to the charities involved to advise them on the type of political activity a charity can be involved in.”
Frankly Guido is surprised that Muslims are so keen to back someone so keen on alcohol*...

The editor of the New Statesman (and producer of tonight's 'Dispatches') is now changing his tune from presenting an 'it's up to you if you vote for him' type prog to a 'throw him out ASAP' piece in the ES, and calling on NuLab to disown him.
Taken long enough for the scales to fall from his eyes, dontcha think? The rest of us have always known he was a nasty little shit.

A rap on the knuckles is not good enough, if they had been Anglo-Saxon charities they would have been crucified unless of course they were supporting a pro-governmental line like anti-hunt legislation.
I wonder how much of Londoners' Council and Ken's Pension Fund Top-up Taxes make their way into donations to Muslim "charities". I wouldn't be surprised if electoral bribery in the guise of cultural development is something that Ken's been up to for years.

I thought all these charities were meant to refrain totally from any political activity or else lose their charitable status? Oops silly me - that is Independant schools that have to jump through hoops, not honest, hard working Muslim charities!
Yes. These charities are very rarely charities in the commonly understood way. They are not the mechanisms for good works, sourced from rattling tins outside Marks and spencers.
These are little more then Quangos, most of them derive their funds entirely from the public purse.

When I was a student, I used to live in those northern inner cities which had seen vast tracts of old housing bought up by muslim groups and rented out to students.
We used to have to pay our rent directly to a muslim charity which neatly allowed them to avoid income tax, because the money was a 'charitable donation'.
Often charming, but what a bunch of rule benders and cheaters.
Am told Ken is quite a nice guy when sober, but as a crime report at Holloway (NH) confirms, a gobby, tyrant when he has a drink within him. Then again, many of us are mouthy when pissed...

I live in a part of London with a big Hindu community, good and bad like the rest of us, but they don't seem to find it necessary to have everything they do funded by the Govt/Mayor/Local Authority.

Dougal - maybe the Hindus aren't so easily bought, like Leninslime's other backers. In any event I'm afraid that it is simply in the Muslim tradition to cheat or worse electorally.
We are the mugs to let one group of people drive a coach and horses through lax charity regulations, while stamping on others.

I couldn't answer that one; I haven't noticed any Sikh charities being involved in any funny goings on either... I suppose it must be something to do with the kind of books they read.
Some religions seem to feel the need to influence politicians a lot more than others do. I'd suggest that all the Abrahamic religions should be treated with extreme caution; they all seem to be obsessed with trying to influence the political process to bring it into line with their weird moralities. Maybe things would be better if they were all stoned.

mint, I don't know that one, but I do know a survey was carried out last year and 17% of mps admitted to being alcohol dependent. alcohol and drug tests should be mandatory before voting. no more crafty joints for jacqui and co. is there anybody on the frontbench who didn't used to be a pothead?

I've always thought that Boris is a complete twit. Likeable and well bred and very genuine, but a twit nonetheless. Sort of a cross between hugh grant, fozzy bear and bertie wooster.
Ken must be livid at the thought of losing to him. In years to come people will assess their love of psephology by asking "Did you stay up for Ken?"

This is perfectly true. I have spent a lot of time in Nepal (population mostly Hindu, some Bhuddist) and they are wonderfully honest people, bar the odd rotten egg you'll find anywhere. They are also hard working and thoroughly decent folk with high moral standards yet an easygoing take on life.
It certainly taught me not to tar all "asians" with the same brush.

Stories about Ken on the piss have been knocking around for years and anyone who read the stories about the party bust up a few years ago should have been aware. It was also fairly obvious he'd had a skinful before the concentration camp guard incident.
Still there was enough there to remind us all what an obnoxious self serving shit Livingstone is particularly about the way he co-opts GLA employees to help him get re-elected
Hopefully this will help to get him removed at the election
