Vaz - Brown Wants "Employment Apartheid"
Keith Vaz, a former minister and now chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, is not at all happy with Brown's"British Jobs for British Workers" slogan. In no uncertain terms last night he told the Commons:
There has also been talk recently of the importance of British jobs for British people. I worry about that statement. It lacks credible arguments, and some have suggested that it appears to amount to little more than employment apartheid. It assumes that foreign workers are somehow stealing jobs from United Kingdom workers, an idea for which there is absolutely no evidence. It also raises the question: how do we ensure that jobs are going to British people and what do we classify as British? If someone has another citizenship but they have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, they have a right to work.
Hopes are falsely raised whenever "British jobs" are mentioned. Every position that is filled will require justification and an account kept of how many British jobs there are. The fact is that, in this country, over the past century, we have entered into many agreements with European and Commonwealth countries, which means that we are obligated under treaties, rightly, to give jobs to people who are not British, based on merit... There are Indian and other citizens who came to this country to work hard and to help our economy, and they have been treated very badly.
Guido's father and grandparents came from India in the fifties*, it seems that if Brown had been in charge, they would have been made unwelcome and denied employment. Think what might have been the resulting loss to the future of political commentary...

Let's not get Brown's rhetoric mixed up with policy. As for Vaz, he says there is no evidence, yet the simple fact that non-Brits are employed is evidence, isn't it?

A reference to where Vaz said or wrote this would be handy Guido. I do not know what Brown is playing at exactly. But to put a more positive spin on it than you have - as you literally hate him we'd expect no different - he is trying to reclaim and redefine Britishness.
He is clearly not using the word as Griffin etc have done. And with an inclusive definition of the word it is clearly utterly different in meaning. Might not be as clear on the streets of Barking as it is to me and thee but what is your excuse for pretending he means the same as Griffin? He doesn't and you are clever enough by far to know that.
Brown has also not used it exclusively. He has not said ALL British jobs etc, however he is defining these British workers. Hoping that SOME British jobs at least are filled by British workers and training our kids up accordingly does not seem like a big problematic.
Like yourself I am considerably Irish. This is entirely accidental on my part but quite welcome.
It was noticeable that a YouGov probe in the subject of Britishness recently did not include we Irish on the same level as Welsh and Scottish.

I love Vaz's notion that folk sit around thinking "I really want to go and help the British economy". When I went off to Germany in the 70s I think my motives were rather more selfish, perhaps the current wave of immigrants are better people.
If there's no evidence of foreign people taking Brit jobs as Vaz says, let's see who runs and works in all these "hand car washes" that have sprung up all over the place from nowhere, and priced out the Brit car washes.
Let's see who now works in catering, or cleaning in hotels, or working in the commons. Well we could, but the lazy immigration department doesn't want to do the raids.
You can find plenty of other examples if you can be bothered to look. But these are politicians - they are blind to everything apart from their fat pay-packets and even fatter protected pensions.
Vaz should be congratulated. He is pointing out that the shallow and illogical statement made by Brown, is politically bankrupt and is taken from the BNP and National Front in a vain attempt to convince English people (NOT 'British') to vote Labour and not BNP/Nat.Front.
Cameron should really concentrate on this. He registered a 'hit' yesterday. It should be thrown at Brown constantly...lets face it the Labour Party would not let the Conservative Party off the hook!

Brown is a globaliser and a neocon. The slogan "British jobs for British workers" is just more hot air from him solely designed to try to stop increasing numbers of white working and lower-middle class former Labour voters turning to the BNP. Obviously I saw your potential from the first but I've always found it difficult to convince other people.
Please bare with me because it seems some need a simple lesson in traditional economics.
Wages and conditions for the working man/woman are not improved by politicians however much they may have brainwashed the stupid into thinking so.
They are improved usually way before a politician has even stopped wanking himself off in the morning. By the fundamental logic of the market.
Put as simply as my rapidly over worked aging mind can muster.
When workers are in short supply you would be shocked just how quickly W&C are improved. Sometimes without the worker having to even ask. Skilled workers even quicker then that. In fact almost instantly.
When they are not in short supply, all the strikes protest marches and general bullshit will make virtually no difference. In reality it only results in unemployment, vast amounts claiming sickness on benefits or the boss getting back at the workers some other way.
Immigration is the key not socialist politics. There are many benefits from immigration but very few of them for the common working man. Some of which are starting to work this out. A bit FAR FAR to late. But better late then never.
The people that simply love immigration are small business men like myself, politicians that pamper for the immigrate vote, national and muti-national corporations, government tax revenue and the mega rich power brokers that finance our whole political and banking systems.
Socialism as we have it today does not represent the poor it does not now and it never has in the past. It not only suits dictators it was designed by them and those with agendas so potentially evil and vindictive they could not possibly tell anyone normal what they are.
You may believe that restricting immigration is in itself inflationary but you would be completely wrong. Its just that it is inflationary under our current way of running things.
Inflation is a function of to much money chasing to few goods. Stop printing too much money and get rid of most of the welfare state and not only could we have open borders we would still be paying no more then £40,000 for a 5 bedroom house.
We the people can make this country the paradise it should have been a long time ago by now, and more quickly then many could possibly imagine.
Only problem is our politicians and ruling elites simply refuse to even let us have a fare go at it.

No evidence of foreigners stealing jobs from UK workers ! There is plenty of evidence in the IT sector. A couple of years ago over 60,000 were 'on the bench' as Tony B'Liar stood in the House of Commons and lied claming that there was a shortage of people and the home office were issuing work permits like there was no tomorrow.
