Mendelsohn Goes Missing

Jon Mendelsohn has gone to ground and is not answering questions from the media.

He released a statement claiming that when he learnt from Peter Watt that Abrahams was behind a string of proxy donations he was "unhappy with the arrangement... very concerned that these arrangements did not meet the strict transparency test that I wished to see in place... I did not discuss this with the officers of the national executive committee or party leadership... I decided to tell Mr Abrahams that his method of contribution was unacceptable."

He sticks to the party line that Peter Watt the General Secretary thought it was legally correct. So despite his suspicions he still kept schtum, told no one and intended to put a stop to it. Do you believe this highly successful spin doctor is telling the truth?
  • Why didn't Mendelsohn immediately inform the Electoral Commission?
  • Why given that he told Peter Watt of his concerns, didn't he also report his concerns immediately to the NEC or his party leader, Gordon Brown?
  • On appointment as Director of General Election Resources, it was stated that he would report to Douglas Alexander, the General Election Co-ordinator. So why did he report this to Peter Watt instead?
  • In the letter to Abrahams he refers to "the priorities that we are assigning to our resources", isn't that actually a softening up phrase for a bid for more money?
It all just doesn't ring true. It smells like he is trying to protect his political superiors. At least in this case we have clear evidence of wrong doing and the police won't have difficulty proving a crime was committed. Gordon Brown has already told us it was unlawful.

I'm reliably informed that Mr Mendelsohn is currently sitting with his ill-gotten gains in Fingel's Cave. This is somewhere on the west coast of Scotland.

When times are good people will overlook or even forgive such matters.

With the forthcoming economic downturn - for which Mr Brown has left us woefully unprepared - will come a much closer scrutiny of our governing classes.

Ordinary people are rightly asking what the hell is happening on this and on a wide range of issues.

Bad luck Mr Brown.

The only credible explanation for the way Abrahams gave his money to Labour and the way that they have tried and failed miserably to cover things up, Brown and his cronies are absolute amateurs compared to Blair and Levy, is that the money was a BUNG for services rendered, including the reversal of the planning at Durham Green and who knows what else when Blair was a local MP.

At least one criminal act has been admitted - the matter should be investigated by the police.

Notwithstanding the incompetence of the Labour party and sheer second-rate nature of all this, it also all appears too much for the media to handle - facts muddled and naivety all round.

Look at the comment the Beeboids choose to lead off the reaction to Robinson's latest attempt to catch up with this story:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/nickrobinson/2007/11/someone_else_di.html

"I'm no longer interest in this topic, Nick. ... Look hard enough and you can find trouble anywhere. ... I think, you're barking up the wrong tree. The Prime Minister's cool focus should be a big enough hint he's brushing this aside and moving on to more constructive affairs. ... For gods sake man, find something worthy of attention."

Odd that it took a whole hour form someone to respond. But I'm "sure" that was the first response and so deserves its place at No.1. The Beeboids wouldn't try to give it undue prominence, would they?

(Is any part of the BBC less accountable than the comment moderation? A black art indeed.)

Oh, it just gets better and better:

http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page13861.asp

"The Prime Minister took questions from local, national and international journalists today in his regular press conference. Areas covered included the EU Africa summit, Iraq, capital gains tax and the Middle East."

True. But I'm sure there were at least a couple of questions about something else. Anyone remember?

"Film versions of the press conference are usually posted on the PM's site but will not be included this month due to issues of content and the Civil Service Code. The transcript has been edited for the same reason."

Expecting this all to become sub-judice soon, by any chance?

vince cable gets best soundbite of the year (close second is camerons he should get in his car and go to buckingham palace).

guardian finding a few odd things with northern rock trust fund ,(most of which is in an offshore fund called granite) wonder what they could be??? mmmm funny beneficiaries that dont get any money ??

gordons main johna point score came from , not answering where the the 25bn lent by the Bank of England is comming from , gordo said a facility , but didnt say from where.

primary school ed going to wall , the red despot spotter is also concerned about the two commitiees and nu liebours internal enquiry , much better to let the her majesties constabulary have a look.

hulnes go a ben bradshaw was quite excellent although we had forgot about ex prisoner loan , none the less bradshaw as far as i know hasnt issued a writ , so honours were sold for money then ben eh??
just astonished that hulne can dish it out , liked the donating via people who werent aware they had done so , very sleazy/ sneaky.

overall red despot spotter view is that gordo did the useual we are setting up a committee to make sure it never happens again line, the defect of this is obvious. but his party have lied , may have now breeeched a number of laws , and there may be more to come on the reasons why abrahams wished to remain anynonymous ,

it just gets more interesting onto what has been going on behind the spin.

oh by the way Mr Vaz dont worry we have the information we needed.

not long now gordon before your lies are exposed. you should never decieve the british public .

Now I have stopped yelping with giddy delight as the Abrahams saga unfolds (the Abrahams/Paxman train wreck being the undisputed highlight), I am starting to worry that despite the obvious entertainment value, we really don't have a smoking gun. And before you all start with your 'yeah buts'...consider this:

1. David 'nutjob' Abrahams is obviously a sociopath and a sycophant. NuLab tolerated him for his money and nothing more. They will happily throw him to the wolves to save their necks and he is so thoroughly odious that the public (sadly) may be happy simply to see him discredited and charged with false accounting or similar. NuLab will brief that they were victims of Abrahams' deception.

2. Ignorance is no defense in law but unless there is proven intent on the part of Harman, Mendelsohn, Benn, Broon etc (and any e mails/notes/memos will be deleted by now) proceedings are unlikely. Cash for Honours taught us that.

3. The dead tree press and the BBC have completely lost their bottle - a scan of the main web sites today shows that already they are distracted by Britney's new baby and the bird from Catatonia. Without the good old days of a media frenzy, NuLab do as they please.

4. Dave Cameron - whatever anyone says to the contrary, he pulled his punches at PMQs. We all know why; if Lord Ashcroft of Belize has ever done anything remotely dodgy (almost certain), Dave will get it in the neck from every direction of he goes in for the kill now - he is playing a long game, hoping Gordo will self destruct.

5. Gordo's resolve - he is flawed it goes without saying but he isn't stupid. If he allows his leadership to fall apart - he is gone never to return. He will do anything to cling on - including burning Harman, Dromey, Mendelsohn and even little Dougie if necessary. He doesn't need or want to be liked like Blair did, so he won't care that he looks like an arse.

So, give it a month and I am sorry to say - the NuLab top table will look much the same as it does now.

Lets have a reality check guys. We are talking about a Labour party supporter who simply wanted to remain anonymous so the media wouldn't door step him (ironic now obviously). It's hardly great corruption here.

Remember too that people like Guido are extremely bitter that their last smear campaign came to nothing and are waging a vendetta. Guido is on the record as saying he thinks all political debate should be like this - talking about party funding rather than policies that effect the country.

Is that what we really want?

James, please wake up.

They broke the law. It was criminal. Labour Party Officials and others committed criminal offences to hide the source of the funds. Then they lied and dissembled to cover it up

Why?

And why was it necessary? To protect a man who was so publicity shy he wanted to stand as an MP at one stage? Doh!

It stinks. At the very least it shows how useless, disorganised, shambolic and incompetent this lot are

Tamburlaine said...

Doesn't ring true? This is no time to mince your words Guido. His whole 'line to take' is utter fucking bullshit and unlike most other NewLab lies is not even going to convince the true believers.

So the general secretary of the Labour Party didn't know that taking donations through third parties is illegal? This is hardly some arcane point of funding law that only a hot-shot party lawyer would be able to deduce.

So the Director of General Election resources thought that taking disguised money from Abrahams was wrong, but didn't give the money back; had concerns about it, but only told them to Peter Watt and not his immediate boss; and was planning to tell Abrahams to stop sending him concealed money, but inadvertently sent him a letter which didn't mention it and implicitly solicited more of the same?

Tradition demands that when you get your fingers caught in the till in politics you at least have a stab at making up some convincing lie, just to give your own supporters something to cling to. The quality of bullshit under Blair was far higher. This bunch have already (even if they don't know it yet) mentally resigned themselves to being kicked out at the next election and are just going to cling on and go through the motions until May 2010.

Guardian leader slates Mendelsohn and calls for him to be sacked.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,2218615,00.html

More disturbing is Mr Mendelsohn's response. The payments were made in an illegal manner, a fact he did not acknowledge yesterday, but he seems to have done nothing except write an ambiguous letter to the donor himself late last week after requesting a meeting. He did not think it fit to warn his party leader, or the police, or the Electoral Commission - all of whom should have been contacted. No preparation was made to repay the money - only, says Mr Mendelsohn, to discontinue the practice. And we only have his word for that: Mr Abrahams claims he took the letter as a bid for more money.

The gap between this behaviour, an attempt to limit the fallout, and the prime minister's own claim to outrage is too wide for Mr Mendelsohn to keep his job if the prime minister wants to be taken seriously.

Vienna Woods said...

Of course you know that Mendelsohn wrote his hand written letter AFTER he was contacted by "The Mail on Sunday" on Saturday. No secretary to type it for him on a Saturday. This behavior is known in the sticks as First Panic, then cover your arse!

If this group of corrupt politicians feel that the law, which they have clearly broken, does not apply to them then the people of Great Britain will be fully justified if they use force, the only alternative left, to deal with them. And, the sooner the better.

Anonymous said...

Could the nutjobs stop advocating that "the people" use force. "The people" only ever rise behind some greater ogre who is happy to sacrifice them for his (usually) own comfort.

Right, enough composer puns. The low down on Abrahams, if it hasnot already been recorded. In all his companies (as listed by BBC - I couldn't be arsed to check out more)net assets amount to about £21K per latest accounts. Property assets of about £8Million matched by secured bank loans of £7.6Million and other liabilities. He is however, SOLE TENANT of all his companies' properties and sub-lets all properties to other tenants and doubtless makes a margin for himself there, but I would doubt if that amounted to more than 1-2% of property value p.a. - say £200K max. In his main company about £700K of cash/assets have been stripped out in 2005/06 which may match his donation patterns. However, this does not show he has pots of cash and whilst his companies have assets worth £8M they are all in hock to the bank. Durham Green yet to file accounts but as there is no development yet unlikely there will be pots of cash there.
