Is this why the Bank of England was ordered by Brown to bankroll them with a blank cheque to the tune of £23 billion and rising. This is already the equivalent of over half the total NHS bill with no end in sight.
Does anyone imagine any of this money will ever be paid back when Northern Rock are already struggling to meet the interest payments alone?
It will take more than a sweating, shifty looking fool like Congdon on Newsnight to keep the lid on this almighty mess which could end up bringing down the government.
Debt is allowed to get out of control and we get a run on a bank. Inflation has been around 4% or higher for over a year, hundreds of thousands have gone bankrupt, and repossessions are going up and up.
If Brown had kept his eye on the ball while chancellor, instead of plotting and scheming against Blairites, Tories and anyone else he didn't like, we might not be in this mess now.
2008 will be the year all Brown's debt-bloated chickens come home to roost as the ponzi scheme that is the UK economy disintegrates.

bbc quoted we have now susbsidised northern rock to the tune of £1000 for each taxpayer. i hear barclays are a bit worried and citi group in the USA have called a special board meeting as they now have a few problems.

Here's the agenda for the UK for 2008:
credit market dries up almost completely,
consumer spending evaporates,
huge recession in the retail sector,
massive redundancies,
house prices crash by at least 30%,
huge leap in repossessions and bankruptcies,
unemployment rises strongly,
run on the pound,
sterling collapses to 1.10€,
second and possibly third major UK bank in serious trouble,
inflation rockets upwards as imported goods cost more,
interest rates raised,
listed companies fail,
political crisis intensifies as weak, dishonest, and shambolic government loses the confidence of the voters and overseas investors.
Congdon was deliberately misleading on that show.
He stated that the audit showed that the Asset Values of the houses mortaged were greater than the value of the mortgages issued on the houses.. so the risk of bad debts was nill (or very small).
IIRC the mortgages were 80% of the Assett Values.
That of course is totally misleading.
Because:
there are bound to be some houses where the mortgage isuued was 100% of the asset value or even 120% - cos that is what NR were issuing and they did not become the fastest growing lender by chance.
The overall picture may well be that Assets values are greater than mortgages but to say that means no risk of bad debts means implying:
evry time there is a bad debt on a mortgage the other borrowers kindly club together to give NR the loss..
(In other words an AVERAGE cover figure is meaningless regarding bad debts. The bad debts are the high risk low asset cover mortgages.. and that's it. As many mortgagees may have been with NR for years and paid off part of the mortgage and the Asset appreciated, you would expect the Asset values to be greater ON AVERAGE than oustanding mortgages)
Congdom is no fool. IMO he was deliberately misleading .. and if Cable was familiar with the mortage business or well enough prepared he could have shot the argument full of holes..)

Are you claiming that Professor Tim Congdon was deliberately lying about the state of Northern Rock's books on that Newsnight programme?
Why would he do that? Is he a shareholder? Is he acting on behalf of Brown in an attempt to deliberately mislead investors and savers?
If he lied and/or is covertly working for Brown then surely he has destroyed any credibility he may have as an objective economics expert?
It would also suggest that the Northern Rock debacle has much worse to come, for shareholders, savers, the government, and perhaps, the whole UK banking system.

With Northern Rock showing the political cracks in its seams and the Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays borrowing money from the US Fed to help their account holders liquidity problems, I think its fair to say we're all doomed!

You have so much money you also control scientific university's and own private laboratory's that make drugs to combat virus and bacterial infection. Which are very expensive and you also NEED to make a very good return on your investment.

I once employed a 17 year old who before had worked for a glass company. His job since leaving school was smashing shop front windows at night and then ringing the owner up the next morning to see if they had any work they needed doing.......get it?
What makes people so sure that the sort of thing that happens every day on THEIR streets, can NOT be happening where large multi national corporations (tied by their APRON strings to government with almost infinite amounts of tax payers cash at their disposal) are concerned?
