Tax Policy Emergency : "Call in the Smith Institute"
The non-political charity known as the Smith Institute, which is in no way a front for the Brownies, is having a Downing Street seminar on Wednesday next week. The subject? "Fair Tax" - which is the political hot-issue of the moment for the Brownies. Is this what Gordon meant this morning when he said he wanted more time to "forensically" take apart Osborne's proposals?
Judging by the copy of the invitation Guido has obtained, it looks like the Smith Institute is being tasked with developing a political response strategy for dealing with the non-domicile and inheritance tax proposals - Osborne has pushed Brown into uncomfortably defending tax-free billionaires. Something the Brownies would not have been expecting...

Something the Brownies would not have been expecting...No wonder Smith Institute director Wilf Stevenson is inviting people to 11 Downing Street "with the kind permission of the Chancellor of the Exchequer" - they need a new tax philosophy and fast.
UPDATE : The respected Institute for Fiscal Studies is distinctly unimpressed at the claim that the event is part of a jointly held seminar series. Bonnie Brimstone the events organiser at the IFS told Guido she had not heard anything about it, Robert Chote the Director of the IFS was more diplomatic, when Guido put it to him that Wilf's invite said it was a joint seminar he demurred "I wouldn't describe it that way".

The only way Darling Brown can go is to tax non-Doms more heavily than Osborne is. In which case Osborne will decry Labour for soaking the rich etc. So the non-dom issue is a multi-stage detonation under Labour.
Calll in the Sith, Gordon's had a vision. He's scraping the barrel politically already, the Cupboard marked Brown is bare already.
Here's a top secret tip for Call Me Darling.
SPEND LESS
Is anyone else troubled by this Nut's recently announced preclivity to following 'visions'?
Bizarre, Dark SIde shenanigans doubtless.
When are the Charity Commision going to find some balls and reveal their findings?
Guido, you'd enjoyed the Forum 2000 Freedom & Responsibility conference I am attending. Here's a few highlights.
A serving Czech minister described tax cuts as "starving the beast". Former Polish communist member turned free market reformer Leszek Balcerowicz described high tax to GDP rates as the main barrier to economic growth citing 20% as a target. And a former Finance Minister of Hungary questioned whether the government should be engaged in the provision of health services at all.
If these are the opinion-formers, I think I'll stay in the region. We'll be buying up the UK in a few years time.
Its no good relying on the Charity Commission to root out unlawful practises amongst the charity community. Suzie Leather has received instructions from the government to concentrate on issuing threats to public schools.
The immoral system of taxing the dead who have paid their taxes in life thus subjecting the family to a double tax has just been abolished in the Madrid province of Spain. Although with the present incumbent “progre” government in Spain is made up of nineteenth century ignoramuses like yours, who should be removed for a long time in the next elections, it is a trend that can’t be ignored by those governments who over tax and as Spain has the possibilities of becoming a tax haven in the future, assuring that more countries in the EU will follow suit, and the old Eastern Block will. Taxing the non-doms in London may just be the start of the demise of a life stile in the UK that could herald the end of London as a financial center. If the liberal sensible low tax impetus starts to spread we may find that high taxed areas such as off shore islands to the Euro-Asian continental area become interesting backwaters for cheap holidays and little else.

watched press briefing, he was definitely crapping it, but got off with "taking a view idea" , with press. no mention of who briefed what to news men ? and ohh those young turks that had pushed brown into it , so what is it then , gordos stupid for taking advice from juveniles , or that he really had no ideas of his own ??

www.fairtax.org in the US are campaigning to abolish income tax and replace it with a federal sales tax. It is becoming an election issue there with 6 republican and one democratic candidate for President saying they would sign it into law. Maybe this is the labour answer to the conservative inheritance tax and stamp duty cuts!

In a way it is sad. Democracy requires that a vigorous opposition keep an overmighty Government in check. We are witnessing the slow death of the New Labour project. It will only get worse. Brown's judgment will get more and more bizarre as he rages against the fading of the light and then the Tories will get a go. An enfeebled Labour party will not be able to hodl tehm to account and the country will be the loser. Labour should ditch Brown within the next 12 months for everyone's sake.
The Chairman of the Charity Commission is a Dame. Balls are not part of a Dame's equipment
"Praguetory said..."
You may or may not also be aware that Bulgaria is joining the rather long list of Eastern European countries that have a flat tax system.
Read more here
Interesting table here on the tax rates in Eastern Europe.
"The Chairman (sic) of the Charity Commission is a Dame"
Shouldn't that be Chairperson then? Just saying.
Only Gordo would organise a debate at 8am in the morning. The most successful debates only get going after a glass or two!
anon: "Balls are not part of a Dame's equipment"
Is Gordon a Dame?
dear guido
ime afaid were all in trouble on here, jack strawski is going to make enciting homosexual hatred a crime.
show you alleigence to the stasi guido and they may just forgive you.
i assume his citizens arrests were not homosexual incitement , as he rugby tackled there muscular legs to the ground and felt in there pockets for an offensive weapon.
what a wonk society "imagine a jack boot stamping on you head for a thousand years"

Gay Gordon's announced a 50% cut in British troops in Iraq. So how about a 50% cut in Gay Gordon's public sector non-job army in the UK ?
Er... Guido -
The invitation says 'in association with the IFS' - not as you put it - "a joint seminar"
anon @ 5.59:
The US could have a sales tax only policy (and should), but if the govt instituted it in UK, we'd all be spending even more over the Channel, and the gay snot-gobbler would be apoplectic. How the froggies would laugh, and all the plumbers would spend everything in Poland. No help from his euro-brothers for the greasy pervert I don't think.
Red despot spotter - you must understand the gays and Islamists are Nu-Liebour's core supporters, and you can be sure that the man of straw's heroic exploits exist only in what passes for the cunt's mind.
Crash Gordon's going to have to start taxing his non-dom donor buddies a few pennies. How will the likes of poor old Mittal afford £25K or so a year?
We need to raise the lower rate of tax from 20p to 22p to ensure these multi millionaires stay in the UK and continue to fund the Labour Party - the only other way Crash Gordon is going to get any money is to spend more time hanging around public toilets.
Don't know why he needs a seminar. All he's got to do is ask the Milliband boys why they didn't want to pay anything of their Dad's £1m+ estate, and which loop holes they used to avaoid tax, and job's a good 'un
Raise income tax? Too obvious. No, he'll just change the "golden rule" for borrowing. Darling will then increase government debt so Gordo can still pour money into public services, taking comfort in the knowledge that whoever follows him as PM really will get the smelly end of the stick
Er...Voice of Reason,
The Dictionary Definition of "association" is "a group of people organised for a JOINT purpose"
What on eart was your point?
Idiot.
Perhaps all co-conspirators should phone the Smith Institute - which claims to be "an independent think tank" and volunteer to participate in the Smith Institute's non-aligned, politically neutral tax discussions?
If you're free next week... then contact Wilf Stevenson at the Smith Institute on 020 7823 4240 or email him at: info@smith-institute.org.uk
John Trenchard - I wasn't aware of the moves afoot in Bulgaria so thank you for your contribution. What was an occasional pebble is becoming an avalanche.

When GORD the FRAUD talks about 2500 troops by the spring left in Iraq he means IF not WHEN! At 2500 troops the British will only be able to protect ONE supply road and ONE airfield! 2500 troops means TWO Infantry battalions MAX on the ground only(the rest being support staff Etc)What a role for the mighty British Army? fucking expensive security guards and sitting ducks for snipers Etc!
What sort of a seminar starts at 0830 and finishes at 1000? At most business dos I attend we'd hardly have got past the keynote by then. Is the debate on fairer tax systems just a cover for another tax dodge?
K,
Look, it doesn't take long to sign a cheque and pick up your 'charitable donor' bonus points on the old peerage application tick box, does it ?
That time is normal for No. 11 seminars.
I noted the phrasing of "meet the wishes and expectations of our people" - sounds like something a government would say ("our") rather than an independent think-tank.
Somehow turned into alter ego K earlier .....
Are all their seminars only 90 minutes from start to finish? If so that's the most monumental con job. Surely further grounds for investigation by the Charity Commissioners?
