Bang Goes the Neighbourhood

Hardly a day passes without further rumours about the Blair's house-hunting. But where is his office to be? A co-conspirator has directed Guido towards 33 St James's Square, the Robert Adam designed grand eighteenth century Grade II listed former London home of the Earls of Buckinghamshire.

Guido's revelation - despite what Blair's people claim - won't really add to his security risk.

Iranian MOIS intelligence agents will practically have to drive past the front door on the way to their Embassy, so they will probably notice him.

Guido suspects that the added security risk the neo-peacemaker brings to the area is going to irritate the hedge fund managers and corporate titans whose natural domain he is entering. Never mind what the denizens of the local gentleman's clubs will make of his wife...

Well he's not a gentleman, so I doubt he will be applying for membership. It's a long schlep for the Merseymouth to Billingsgate though.
The area used to be so nice.

Last time I looked, that building was full of film partnership promoters and their ilk.

Jesus. Am a member of the Naval and Military (In and Out). Horrible feeling that they'll let the bugger in.

Ah well. They'll have to get used to the caravans, transits and burning tyres when Cherry's relatives visit.

Such is life.

Surely 33 St James's Square is just a block of multiple occupancy serviced offices ?

Guido's revelation - despite what Blair's people claim - won't really add to his security risk.

True enough

Iranian MOIS intelligence agents will practically have to drive past the front door on the way to their Embassy, so they will probably notice him.

The Iranian Embassy is still in the same place as when it was stormed by the SAS on the orders of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on 5th May 1980

Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran
16 Prince’s Gate
SW7 1PT

i.e. just south of Hyde Park

Perhaps you are thinking of the former Libyan Embassy, at 5 St. James Square outside of which WPC Yvonne Fletcher was murdered on 17th April 1984 ?

However, they have moved to:

The People’s Bureau of The Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
15 Knightsbridge
SW1X 7LY

i.e. near Harrods

Guido suspects that the added security risk the neo-peacemaker brings to the area is going to irritate the hedge fund managers and corporate titans whose natural domain he is entering.

What added security risk ?

Who could possibly want to harm a retired British politician with some influence, but no power ?

Remind us again who exactly is funding Tony Blair's think tank office ?

Clinton moved into Harlem. Why won't Blair move into Hackney instead of swanky St James?

Perhaps because he couldn't give a rat's bollock about the poor. Like most of New Labour.

Why all the house hunting? he has a perfectly nice family home in Trimdon - easy to police and an area where "outsiders" are noticed.
But of course, the North East is not good enough for those two scroungers. And the Geordies hate them. That's why NuLab had to bus in supporters from London whenever Blair wanted to use the Working men's Club as a backdrop.
Wake up Northern Britain - these people hate us about aren't above using us.

Sorry, I'm still trying to get my head round the oxymoron that is "Tony Blair/Middles East independent EU peace envoy thingy type person".
No, not there yet......think I'll go & read the EU constitution, sorry, EU "just tidying up things" document, it will be easier to make sense of.

as a fellow member of the In & Out, my suggestion would be that it would be very popular replacing the much lamented 'Goat' with letter box gob's head.

Mr 'Watching Them, Watching Us',

Interesting question that you pose there - who is funding Mr Blair these days?

Who is funding Mr Blair these days?

The local Lebanese/Iraqi population around No Tory Square (Connaught ...gedddit!!) pay Cherie Blair to model the latest in chador fashion accessories. I gather she just picked up a colossal cheque for her latest "Total Eclipse of the Sun" range.

Thank you for that. Tickled me fair to death, nearly choke on breakfast vodka.

When's Blair in court? 7.45 - Hadn't thought of that.

Crikey, I hope they don't buy that nice little mansion in Wilmslow, I've got friends there who wouldn't like to see all their garden equipment and statuary go missing, nor to wake up to a line of filthy pikeys taking a dump in their parterre.

Won't they point her gently in the direction of Shepherds Market?

Christ, even Geoffrey Archer would draw the line at that one.

Still...I admire how he explores every avenue...comparing the Iranian government to 1930's Nazis could well be the surprise initiative which brings everyone together in a perfect blissfully peaceful harmony. You just never know...

Sorry mate, need to apologise for leaving the ol' bucket a little sloppy for you. She just prefers it that way.

Must admit that Blair's historical comparisons are more than a bit convoluted...

So did I miss something, then? Did Iraq invade Poland?

Oh no...Poland's invaded the UK, haven't they...

So how come Iraq hasn't invaded Poland?

Has Blair got the fascist analogy the right way round...? You don't think perhaps that he could be the N..n..n..n...naughty one...and he's telling porkies about the Muslims?

So...and purely out of innocent curiosity...what exactly does she like to do with the bucket...?

Does she by any chance harbour a predilection for having stuck it over her head?

Possibly, in the absence of the the triple bags that would normally be required.

It looks as if The Quartet are paying over half a million pounds a year for Tony Blair's new office at 9 Grosvenor Square, near the US Embassy. This former John Admas house, was effectively the first US Embassy in London, and is on the corner of Brook Street and Duke Street, at the north east corner of Grosvenor Square, between the Canadian High Commission and the current US Embassy.

1947 floor plan of this listed building.

See this Property Week article:

Blair heads for Grosvenor Square

17:57 | 22.10.07

Tony Blair has agreed to lease an office in the heart of Mayfair for his headquarters as envoy to the Middle East.

By David Doyle

The former prime minister will move into 9 Grosvenor Square to use as his headquarters while he tries to negotiate peace between Palestine and Israel on behalf of the USA, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia - known as The Quartet.

[...]

Three months rent free

Blair has taken the office for ten years with three months rent free at an annual rent of around £550,000 a year.

He will be able to move into the office after refurbishment works are completed in mid November.

His office will cover the whole four-floor building, totalling 5,913 sq ft paying an average of £93/sq ft.

He will pay the most on the first and second floors - £125.50/sq ft – and then 90% of this on the third, 85% on the ground, 50% on the reception and 40% on the lower ground.

[...]

It is believed Blair had looked at Manchester Square and St James Square as possible London bases before settling for Grosvenor Square.

CB Richard Ellis and Crossland Otter Hunt acted for the landlord.
