Pelling Charges Imminent
Word reaches Guido that Croydon MP Andrew Pelling is to be charged imminently. The local Tory executive committee meets tomorrow night for an emergency meeting. They will wait until he is charged before formally deselecting him.Candidates are already being sounded out to replace him in this ultra-marginal (the Tories have only a 75 vote majority). Guido would bet on the winning candidate being a woman. Note that Gavin Barwell, who runs Lord Ashcroft's targets seats operation, is the Conservative whip on Croydon council. He has been spending a lot of time in Croydon recently…

So the real crime is not the offence, it's the getting caught/charged!
Isn't Gavin Barwell the cchq stooge who presided over the Crossley Saga Hearings in Cornwall two years ago and exacerbated a rebellion amongst Cornish Conservatives. This row spread like wildfire and one political commentator said that the rot and decline in national conservatism started at this point.

Far more important is the news that the UK sub-prime mortgage lending scandal is about to explode into the open. Remember we were told that we don't have sub-prime in this country and it's all a US phenomenon, well it's soon going to become clear that the problem over here is going to be far greater than even the US.
Even the BBC are onto it, probably something to do with Gordon Brown's search for scapegoats for the economic meltdown soon to hit us:

The above quoted BBC article makes me laugh. There have been programs 3 or more years ago saying a similar thing. It's obvious self certification of earnings would be abused.
The FSA or whomever should be regulating them lives up to its initials "F...ing Stupid Agency" co a sebsible regulator would have gently stopped it all before it got out of hand.

Gavin Barwell didn't preside over the kangaroo court that tried the Cornish innocents he instigated and managed the whole fiasco. In excess of £300,000 he cost the Party and hundreds of members and even more voters. And all for the creepy Crossley. 3 years later the local press still refer to the horrors the local officers were subjected to and the Stalinist organisation of the deselection process. But that's the Tory Party of today. They reward inefficiency and immorality so no doubt Barwell will get the Croydon Seat and be amply funded by Lord Ashcroft.
Talk of Gavin Barwell being imposed in a seat following a Deselection is interesting. During the mid 2000s he was Operations Director in CCHQ with immense power and influence. He is a self propelled administrative apparachik in the Tory party. During his time he presided around a number of deselections, Catwell, Crossley, Harland ,Jobson, Lake, just to name a few. it was a time of high activity in the deselection arena, which has now thankfully cooled, perhaps because Barwell has gone to other grazings.
All caught the national headlines as a result of major rows, and all had sad conclusions for the conservative party.
An attempt by a hard core of salt of the earth Conservatives in the Falmouth and Camborne Association to deselect Ashley Crossley only failed because of the large amount of cchq manpower and money poured in by cchq. Gavin Barwell was on and off the helm, and did have a great say in the cchq inquisition of the Cornish Conservative volunteers. The financial cost of these inquisition hearings were in the hundreds of thousands of pounds and resulted in the management team being sacked and hundreds of members walking away. Crossley lived another day but the cornish voters gave him a drubbing at the 2005 election and he came a poor third, in which should have been a conservative seat.
The fact that Barwell is omni-present in the circumstances of a deselection can not be just coincidence or can it?
Have to also wonder about Pelling's motives in support of the amendment to the Freedom of Information Act proposed by David Maclean, which would see the Houses of Parliament and MPs exempted from the disclosure requirements of the FOIA.
When open season is finally declared on Pelling there will be a Great Deal More to be revealed.
madasafish, the lie-to-buy mortgage scandal on Radio 4 tonight is not simply "old news" as you dismissively suggest.
The previous expose' was in 2003 when this corrupt and unsustainable practice was still in it's infancy. Since then billions of pounds worth of mortgages have been issued fraudulently to rival, if not exceed, the sub-prime scandal in the US which brought about a credit crunch which is now leading to a house price crash.
The fact that the highly influential File on 4 are on the case is the strongest indication yet that we are on the verge of meltdown in the housing market here in the UK and scapegoats are being eagerly sought.

It's been obvious for yers that the whole system is a mess... just because the FSA don't recognise a problem till the Northern Rock go belly up does not mean that it's new news.

There is something ironic in a group of people making a stand against violence against women, and then making the sort of jokes about female genitalia that many women regard as a form of verbal aggression.
