It is the labour party which is friends with the shadowy group and not Gordon Brown at all. Brown knows nothing because he is of course new to the job.
If Brown's people have any political nous at all, they will give this money back before lunchtime. And pledge to take no more (although, query whether that would be believed). Of course, the lack of cash then buggers up the option for an October poll... (or at least "who's paying?" becomes the story of the campaign).
This story has got the potential to undermine Labour's support in a way that cash-for-peearegs never did - by catching hold in the perception (and yes, prejudices) of actual and potential supporters alike. The way their double standards could be perceived have already been highlighted in these comments.
What never ceases to surprise me is how something rather mundane can become very quickly deep rooted in the general public perception. Cameron's car following his bike around - small point, but hugely damaging because it became instantly tagged to the little that the public knew about him. With people still not knowing much about Brown, this sort of story can really poison the well.
When coupled with domestic terrorism and our troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's potential dynamite, this one...
Good to see Imran Khand involved yet again in shady Labour dealings. Given how the man has more fingers in more pies than a leper in a Cornish pasty factory I do wonder what the deal is for Broon. Perhaps for every percentage increase in Afghanistan's bumper opium yield they get another £300,000? Or maybe £100,000 for every medic removed from combat operations in Helmand?
At least with Tony Blair you got a better class of crook for your money. These piddling amounts just show up Broon as a complete amateur at fundraising.
