Why Boris Will Win
Turnout was 36.95% in the 2004 Mayoral elections. Ken actually got the support of only 10% of the potential electorate. The Tories are more popular now than before and they have in Boris a likeable candidate. Is that alone enough for him to win? Maybe.
| Party | Name | 1st choice Votes | 1st choice % | 2nd choice Votes | 2nd choice % | ||
| Labour Party | Livingstone, Ken | 685,541 | 35.70% | 250,517 | 13.04% | ||
| Conservative Party | Norris, Steve | 542,423 | 28.24% | 222,559 | 11.59% | ||
| Liberal Democrats | Hughes, Simon | 284,645 | 14.82% | 465,704 | 24.25% | ||
He is extremely popular with the Conservative grassroots and if Boris just succeeds in motivating them to go out and vote, he will win. On the basis of the last election's results Boris needs to get an extra 1 in 5 Tory sympathisers in London to go to the polling station. This is without the extra oomph from the Conservatives nationally polling better than in 2004. Boris inspires a great deal of enthusiasm, he will without doubt energise that base. He also has first-name brand recognition. If Labour tacticians think they can fight him as a posh buffoon they are making a mistake just like the Tories made in thinking they could portray Gordon as a left-winger. Boris will never appeal to a certain type of left-winger, but he doesn't have to, he just has to get the stay-at-home Tories down to the polling station.
People seem to forget that Boris got to Eton on a scholarship, not because he was a toff, the buffoon tag can be shaken off easily.

No, hadn't forgotten that Boris isn't a toff. But at Eton he learned a silly voicer (his dad's a nice Primrose Hill resident, smart, middle class) and decided people like Dave were worth sucking up to. That's the problem.
...........YIPPEEE ............. BORIS FOR MAYOR.................... NOW YOUR TALKING SENSE.
"Why Boris Will Win"
Why Boris Will Wine
Why Boris Will Whine
Why Boris' Willy Winds
Dougie Hurd did that "i was only a scholarship boy" trick and that was totally unconvincing...it just doesn't wash. It's like an SS Officer saying "I was only obeying orders".
He was Eton and that's that for most people.
In regards to Boris's gaffs, I'll quote from Henry IV, part I :
"Ile so offend, to make offence a skill,
Redeeming time, when men thinke least I will."
I think the boy'll come good.
It will be interesting to see if there is depth to Boris. He has cultivated that 'twit?' persona for so long that it is genuinely difficult to take him seriously.
but what about the skeleton in the closet?
Just remember people have voted for Ken because he is Ken, not because he has now been reinstated to the Labour party. Stop seeing the Mayor of London election as the preserve of national politics. Electors in devolved administrations vote differently from voting for MPs for the Westminster village. If the mayoral election was not about personalities then on the basis of the polls the Conservative party could put a donkey as the candidate and he would get elected. (Maybe Boris is that donkey....)
I think it all depends on the Liberal candidate and how the vote splits. Anyone half decent will take votes away from boris. But the Liberals haven't got a hope in hell so why would they risk putting anyone half decent up? I think you're wrong about the buffoon thing. Political geeks know Boris is clever but the general public see him as the posh, waffling guy on HIGNFY. Not to be taken seriously.
Still, interesting times.
The Hitch will bet 10 lefties £500 each that Boris will win .
In the post further down there is talk about various MP's who apparently 'drunk themselves to death' Nicholas Fairbairn is mentioned. Wasn't he the bloke who used to wear tartan trousers, yes and he also said this in 1992 -
"Under a Labour government this country would be swamped with immigrants of every colour and race on any excuse of asylum or bogus marriage or just plain deception". - Sir Nicholas Fairbairns
http://www.answers.com/topic/nicholas-fairbairn
How true his statement turned out to be, he died in 1995 so never got to see just how right his prediction was... Him and Enoch must be spinning in their graves.
Cant see Boris winning, he'll walk it in enclaves like Kensington but vast swathes of London are now perma Labour. (all their new voters they've invited in over the last 10 years you see. )
Boris will win because he is intelligent, likeable, seen as above the money grabbing corrupt politics of the day, is a genuinely funny and articulate bloke. It doesnt matter what Ken is like. Boris is just a much better politician, as long as he comes up with sensible policies that appeal to Londoners he is a shoe-in.
Goodbye Ken, you will not be missed.
bbc screened 4 negative views from the public in their 6 pm news story!! quality broadcaster
Fuck off you nulab beeb scumbags, hes going to win anyway!!!
Boris will win.
His Grace is praying for him.
I'm not too sure how significant previous voting figures are. I imagine that a head to head between Boris and Ken will motivate a lot more voters in both camps. The added media interest should also increase this turn-out.
I too think this may well be a Prince Hal moment for Boris.
I'm just looking forward to the fun of the battle.
As I understand it, Boris will only have to resign his seat in the Commons if he wins and becomes mayor.
The Hitch will bet 10 lefties £500 each that Boris will win .
that's a lot of confidence you're putting in a choice made by that nice Mr Cameron you admire so much, hitch

Who cares? Londoners won't. Boris can have hundreds of them for all they care - he probably has hundreds of them too, that's all part of Boz's appeal :)
Good on ya Boz! Rattle them skeletons
What Guido forgets is that turnout in 2004 was low because the election seemed like a forgone conclusion. When elections look like a close call, more people vote - hence Major getting more votes in 1992 than any other PM in British history.
If the Labour base think the Tory base are voting, they will too.
Boris may be far from an idiot...he writes about Plato so nicely...this does not mean he can hold his own on the rather more tedious mechanics of trying to run Europe's largest city. He has offered nothing in his comments so far that have expressed more than a highly glib understanding of the capital.
The 'stammering idiot' line may not play well, but 'nice chap without a clue about London' will.
Ken - regardless of what you think of him - has an encyclopedic understanding of politics and the capital.
The Guidoisation of politics dictates that Boris must win!
It could just be the beginning of something really significant.
"Good on ya Boz! Rattle them skeletons"
Ming says he isn't frightened!
This is misleading. The Tory vote in May 06 was up just 1% on four years earlier. It's not the party label that does it, contrary to this rushed out Boles/Boris spin.
How about this for a multiple long odds accumulator bet?
Boris to win London Mayor.
Hung Parliament after the next General Election
Boris becomes Tory Party Leader after Cameron is thrown out.
Boris becomes next Tory Prime Minister.
Boris will get so much global profile from leading London into the Olympics he is going to be unstoppable on face/name recognition alone.
Go Boris - this could be the making of you!
Everyone has lose their senses but obviously their sense of humours are intacto. This clown or Livingstone? Who else for the coconut shy?
London deserves so much better. Ist class mind someone wrote to day but gaffe prone. A first class mind can surely endeavour NOT to be gaffe prone. I get the impression Boris Johnson doesn't even try. He is colourful according to everyone. Just what London needs to ring the changes.
Oh hang about! Ken is colourful too. Norris would have been colourful and Jeffery Archer is a rainbow all by hiss self.
Sock puppet I have zero confidence in Cameron 100% confidence in Boris.
Imagine this scenario , you are on the Somme ready to go over the top your officers include
Cpt. D Cameron
Lt. B. Johnson
Who is the one most likely to be by your side revolver in one hand whistle in the other and who is most likely to be fucking miles away in a comfy billet licking some generals arse?
Baaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Boris is the man for London.
With the polls already moving strongly in labour's favour, this will only do even more damage to the Conservatives, gawd 'elp 'em
Why do people assume all the inner-city povs will be desperate to vote for Livingstone? These people don't vote anymore.
They voted for Livingstone and his cronies, during the GLC years, because they had the power to bribe the poor with everyone else's money.
The Mayor's office doesn't have the power and influence to do that. For the same reason they won't be too arsed to vote against Boris, because it won't make any difference to them. The congestion charge, probably isn't a great vote winner or loser with the poor.
Livingstone has been spending money on himself and his cronies, self-aggrandisement and some bits of headline grabbing tinsel.
He may get a few sentimental votes form the poor/ethnic minorities but he was voted in, primarily, because people thought it was a laugh and now the joke has worn very thin. Lots of people will vote against the Newt because of who he is and his record in office, There are a lot fewer reasons for people to vote for him and even fewer to vote against Boris
Anyone else remember all those blogposts from Guido about how Brown would be a disaster for Labour in the polls? Don't seem to be hearing too much on that score now ... in fact no mention of polls anymore, except about Boris, apparently. Still as long as 'The Tories are more popular than before' it's all going to be fine and dandy 'eh? (edit 'before' what? Before they were formed?)
Boris is not a serious contender. When the initial amusement dies down Londoners will not be voting for him in any great numbers. This is just another example of more desperation by the Tories. I'm starting to wonder if they will ever return to Govt actually.
Yours a Tory voter (but that won't stop accusations of being a NUlabbyastroturfyanonymongydiddlydoda)
"the buffoon tag can be shaken off easily" I think not.Too much film in the can for that.
Afraid Livingstone had it right "good candidate-lousy mayor"
Hopefully there will be candidates of real quality on the list. And I don't mean another Dave- Dyke or Lit discovery!
Gary from Stoke
Hitch has offered you £500 to back your view. You are sponging off the Govt so why not take a few quid off Hitch.
Do you lack the balls or are you just a big mouth?
If you want to make it another monkey, I'll offer the same.

They are socialists , no doubt they are having a whip round trying to come up with £500.
Fucking difficult when none of them have any bollocks and know that unlike Guido who hopes to shame a certain blanket stain of a "journalist" into ponying up his gaming debts Hitch WILL collect.
I will go further , my certain winnings will go to charity.
Boris gets to choose the charity
I hope it never happens, but imagine for a moment Boris responding to a major terrorist attach on London...
"...Er [wipes hair off face]...we shall not let the terrorists triumph...uhm...[scratches head]...this just isn't cricket....[another hair wipe]...I say boo to them!" etc etc
The man is a joke.

congratulations on the most sensible post you've ever wanked onto these pages! nice one old girl! keep 'em coming!
I would like to presume that the NuLab cunts know they only add legitimacy to this Blog by their incessant, shrill and vindictive posts but I'm sad to report that I think they're as pigshit thick as they come across in their idiotic postings. Guido clearly has the cunting Nulab Cuntstabularly rattled and their presence here is likely to be directly proportional to the shit they deservedly get.
Nick Robinson made one good point - I paraphrase: 'a lot was made of having a candidate who was known across London just by his first name: Ken. Now the Conservatives could have the same benefit!'
Hiya,
First time blogger on your site.
Bit nervous really.
'Boris-likeable'
'Ooomph'
'Brand recognition'
All a bit Nu Lab and Campbell-like in the Kentuckyfuckation of da Nation don'tchya fink ?
C'mon over to my hovel for a rather humorous take on the 'Brown bounce'
Come on, Guido! Boris is indeed a toff and everyone bloody well knows it. It's part of the appeal. It wasn't a bursary that got him into Eton but a scholarship, and actually the girl at my school who got the most scholarships was independently wealthy, she was just terrifyingly intelligent as well. Boris is much the same, in the body of a very large Golden Retriever.
Also: come on. The English are highly pro-skeleton. It's bonus points.
Here's one lefty that's not taking Hitch's bet, because she's scrounging through her pockets for cash to put on Boris. I probably wouldn't vote for him but if the swing vote in this election is that large and consists of the disenfranchised, it'll probably come down to an emotional level campaign. Boris is a populist, posh as he may be. That will be enough to win; there are not enough doctrinaire leftys and/or grim masochists in the city to overcome mass appeal. Remember, though its in the underclass's best interest to support socialism, they generally don't. They're generally blandly populist and somewhat right-wing.
And it seems Boris's campaign hasn't been shy about playing up the "disadvantaged, multicultural" roots. Wonder where they got the idea...Al Kemal for Mayor of London!
This is show business! Go Boris!
Guido for the first time ever I think that you are talking total bollocks old chap.
Forget Boris, we need Norris. Amusing clowns belong in the circus, not as candidates for City Hall from a serious political party.
But first we have the joy of a Tory 'Primary'. If the mophead makes a good fist of that he may stand a chance. It was a brilliant idea of Cameron to give the Tory candidate a dry run and a chance to build up a head of steam. I think Ken's more worried than he lets on.
Boris Johnson can easily drop the buffoon act, as anyone who saw him interviewed by Parkinson a few years ago knows. He revealed himself there to be someone with a authoritarian mentality. The real Boris is more like Blair and Brown than a buffoon.
Come on Guido, surely the joke is over now. Either that, or should come clean about your real agenda. Now we are back in a cold war with Russia perhaps your support of Boris is a double, double bluff.
Why do NuLab so often mention the fact that people went to decent schools as a point against them? As though a 13-year-old has much more choice about where he goes to school than a person has about the colour of his skin. And as though Labour itself didn't pick plenty of public schoolboys not least Tony, educated in the Scotch Eton, or Clement Attlee.
I read Rod Liddle's piece in Spectator with some interest. This left-winger says he will vote Cons for only the second time when he puts his X next to Boris. First time he voted Con was 20 years ago at Sheffield Uni when YC manifesto pledged to spend all Union funds on a racehorse. Lefties were for sending dosh to the Sandinistas(sic). Hitch looks like you are a bookie with fuckall clients. All mouth no dosh these pro Ken types.
I hope that the blonde bombshell wins! Anything to get rid of that Marxist anti semite Ken (class war) Livingstone! It would benefit the LIBDEMS to support Boris in the election and I hope they do just that! A combined LIBDEM/Conservative vote would destroy red Ken and Boris would choose a LIBDEM deputy! a win win situation I think?
I am fully aware that the NULAB/REDKEN trolls will be throwing the manure my way so I am using my real name and I hope others do likewise! Its time we stopped hiding behind childish names and annons I think ? So if you wish to reply to my post please sign with your real name.
Ok Guido, I'll play along with this for 5 minutes. Give me 5 examples of what Boris has done (serious political stuff only please), that would make someone have confidence in him being mayor of London?
Personally, I think you see this as a goldmine of funny events to fill your blog with over the coming months (even more so now that it looks like those bastards are getting away with the for lordships scandal).
p.s. the only way Boris will win is if Londoners don't give a flying fuck who becomes mayor as long as its not Ken.
Thats interesting Guidot I had given up with this gaff for a while . Looks exceeeidngly promising to me .

Boris just needs to remind people, that Brown and Lab are refusing them a referendum on Europe and how they will be ruled in future, which may well make the London Assembly an irrelevance.

Why don't you fuck off to somewhere white like the Arctic and go tell it to someones who gives a shit - try a Polar Bear. We Londoners can choose whatever government we wish. I do not stick up for any regime anywhere, but Iran has as much right as any other country to possess weapons for self-defence - primarily against Western aggression in the region. The US and UK have a long history of supplying weapons to Iraq (eg during Saddam Hussein's rule) and continue to do so by choosing to arm the Shiites against the Sunnis - and thus inflaming the civil/anti-occupational war which has fuelled the need for weaponry.
I do not need to go to Iran to see people killed on trivial charges - people are regularly murdered in the UK simply because they are not in possession of white skin.

They still seem to find it an attractive destination, perhaps you could helpfully point them instead to one or another of your socialist shangri-las, say Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, or about 93% of Africa.
Is Gordon B doing the word verify? I've just been blessed with PFI PR
Hi Guido,
I asked here:
http://unoriginalname38.blogspot.com/2007/07/challenge-for-you-guido.html
whether you could live up to your reputation and provide the names of all the other candidates for Tory candidate for mayor of London.
Impress me.
@ el dave: Guido's not Wikipedia. He'd only list the names if someone were desperately trying to keep the names a secret. Which of the more obscure candidates are you pulling for? The Bojo forum has already seen both an astroturfing movement from some eedjut nobody's ever heard of and an attempt to promote a for-profit text message Vote Boris thingy. Looks like an interestingly random campaign: Guido's going to be busy for the forseeable future.
