Everyone is Backing Boris

Despite the fact that Guido rarely meets anyone who doesn't want Boris to run, the issue is troubling Guido, with less than a week to go before nominations close things are still unclear. The Backing Boris Facebook group has gained over 500 members in a few days, a small but telling indicator of his popularity.

Boris has intimated that the opinion of his constituency supporters is crucial. So Guido emailed them to encourage them to look favourably on Boris running for Mayor. You can too by emailing soca@oxfordshireconservatives.com.

The prospect of Steve Norris losing to Ken again fills Guido with dread. Why would the Tories repeat the pattern? C'mon Boris...

No, you are right, it is much better for the most popular Tory in the country to lose to Ken Livingstone instead, that will show Labour that the Conservatives under Cameron mean business.

boris is a retard, i mean he's literally a retard. Putting this man in the spotlight, and actually putting him in charge of things that could cause damage is not a good idea. why do you want this to happen guido?

Clown. Why do think Lenninspart is unbeatable? Look at the actual voting figures on the electoral commission's website.

Norris was within kicking distance of Lennin and the majority anti-Lennin vote was split between a strong Simon Hughes and a strong Norris.

That's why Dave was quite right to want to stand up just one candidate against Lennin.

If I was Dave, I'd serious consider not selecting anybody and letting the Lib Dems have a free run. Ken would promptly shit his trousers.

Incidentally, you didn't hear much from the great democrat about the 17 percent of second choice votes that were dumped in the last Mayorial election, did you?

Livingstone's own hanging chad moment and not a word from the useless press...

I think that Boris would make a great Mayor of London. Admittedly, he is a bit of a buffoon but he has charisma and is superior intellectually to Ken Livingstone.

Ken Livingstone has earned the grudging respect of most Londoners but is certainly not charismatic.

Boris would be a thorn in the flesh of Brown in the way that Ken was in relation to Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

My nine year old says Boris looks like an older version of Dafydd from Little Britain

The Oxford Mail reports a couple of district cllrs are against it! How many did they have to ask before they got the reply they wanted?

Boris, PLEASE RUN. You will win if you do. I know you want to be PM. To do that you have to shake off the class clown image and do something big and serious.

You've got a fine brain and this could demonstrate it. You win, you are the party's hero and next in line after Cameron.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. You didn't run for Union President for nothing mate. Are you a celebrity, or do you want to be a true politician? Earn the respect of the nation. You'll WIN if you run. Your public image will be transformed forever.

Boris,
Run. Please run. You didn't go to Eton and Oxford for nothing mate. You did it to get that silly voice despite a nice north London middle class upbringing. You did it to get in with people like Dave. You did it so that one day you could be famous. Now's your chance: run and lose and cement your clown credentials forever.

If Boris is as clever as intimated then it's a shame he has cultivated that 'boffon' persona.

Can I take him seriously - well no, for the above reason. A pity.

It's not about being brainy. Boris may be a delightful dinner-party guest but the London electorate is not going to be won over with a few bon mots. They will vote, entirely selfishly, for someone they think will effectively make thing better for them - that means delivery of services for most of these voters, and taxes kept down for the rest.
Boris does NOT have any track record to suggest he knows how to execute - he is seen as a debater rather than a doer. Guido's bets have been going badly these last weeks and I'll gladly take some more money off him if he thinks Boris can get more than 20% of the vote in a 3-day race.

If Boris won't stand Kirsty Allsop would be my second choice.

For his first 2 years as Leader of the Greater London Council Ken Livingstone was considered by many to be a buffoon and was a figure of fun with his support for any loony left-wing causes going. He did, however, have a good team of colleagues and officers who were able to restrain him and steer him in the right direction. The GLC had some very popular policies (e.g. Fares Fair).

He became Mayor of London mainly on the strength of his reputation as a successful Leader of the GLC.

Boris would be an ideal Mayor.

Annon 4:35 PM,
The fact you let your nine year old watch Little Britain shows you to be a terrible parent.
If you think that is subtible for a child of that age you must be a bit simple.

"Everyone is wanting Boris to run"? Sorry Guido but that is bollocks. Those who want him to run are either:
a. live outside of London and don't give a toss what happens there
b. live in London and don't give a toss what happens there
c.have a warped sense of humour
d. are just fucking stupid
Sure I could think of a few more but i think you get my point.
p.s. Which one do you fall into Guido

What London really needs is a 'Stop The Olympics Before It's Too Late' candidate. What a complete waste of £10,000,000,000 of London taxpayers' money.

I'd like to know why a good catholic boy is so keen to back the abortionist best friend. Do you think the RC church will advise people not to vote for the sort of scum bag who drags his mistress to an abortionist

The total cost of the 2012 Olympics may turn out to be £10 billion but Londoners will pay a relatively small proportion of that. Most of the costs will be paid from general taxation and the National Lottery.

Good old Boris was a hoot at the Festival just now. Turned up a little late and almost stole the show from the delectable Kathryn Jenkins, who I must say has a damn fine set of lungs on her.

Boris is really the only candidate the Tories have with the vaguest shot at defeating Livingstone. If he runs, my feeling is he will win, provided he has the active support of the Conservative machine, such as it is. The very last thing he should do is run if he's not ready, because a failure at this point wouldn't look good on the resume. I'm not as optimistic as I was about this, but still about 51/49 on his chances.

Run Boris and face defeat - Ken's never lost an election. Boris got into parliament with a grace and favour seat. Ken, much as I dislike him, got into power by hard work not patronage.

If Boris is wobbling about, the answer is probably 'no'. This is not a man prone to self-doubt so if he hasn't already decided to go for it then he won't give it the ooomph that he has put in to every project so far.

He has been a lot more individually successful based on exploiting his merits than many of his cohort. A good run of jolly books, a stab at history to a level which combined decent scholarship with popular appeal, and an iconoclastic attitude which meant at least he became a journalist rather than a Euro-pig and was slightly critical even whilst taking advantage of the troughing opportunities.

Most of all he edited the Spectator in to a strong an popular position whilst holding down a real job as a constituency MP. He doesn't seem to be noticably corrupt.

You can't do that without talent, or else everyone would have done it by now.

He'd have done even better if he hadn't combined it with being a bit of an arse, but that is partly the public's fault for demanding comic talents in their public figures, then penalizing them for being jokers.

The only thing I've really got against him is that he thinks Turkey can join the EU and it will all be sweetness and light. He's old enough to know better.

I'd vote for him over Ken, but then I'm not in London.

So it's bonking Boris versus the serial shagger.

Vote Tory - get the support of the Immoral Majority?

Yes, the prospect of Boris leading the Tories to a surefire third, is much more appealing.

Several posts say Ken got there by his own hard work.

Don't forget, he was originally up against Jeffrey Archer.

Who would you vote for?

aardvark said...

Jeffrey Archer didn't stand against Ken Livingstone in the 2000 election for London Mayor.

Steve Norris was the Conservative candidate. Archer was their original choice but they ditched him when he was charged with perjury.

The reason you didn't hear much about the second choice votes is that they were irrelevant, since Ken Livingstone got more that 50% of the first choice votes.
