Boris v Ken - Boris Edges Ahead

YouGov has Boris 6% ahead of Ken with Londoners (46% v 40%), even before he is the official candidate. The detailed data is interesting, Labour voters are more likely to vote for Boris than Tory voters are likely to vote for Ken. Encouraging...

Boris is calling a 'family values' press conference with all his Spectator totty. The theme is going to be:

"We are the Cheeky Bums - don't touch my Girls!"

Weasels are ideally suited for politics, as any political junkie could tell you. It's not a disqualifier: it's practically a prerequisite.

It doesn't surprise me that Boris is ahead. Toff or not, he's got a lot of support from every sector, for a wide variety of different reasons.

Still, I'm fascinated by the fact that for a nominal fee, any registered voter in London can vote in the Tory primary. If I were a union, I'd be rummaging around the sofa cushions for some change to ensure the weakest Tory went up against Ken. I adore this "we are willing to subject ourselves to the will of outsiders for a nominal fee" thing.

It just sets a tone, don't you think? How much for a baronetcy, if they form the next government?

Tales are that Lemmy bit MyBiscuit is going to stand for the Lib Dems. Now that he has installed both Cheeky Girls in his house he can use the Mayoral bid to launch his party leadership campaign to replace the soon-retiring Menzies Campbell. He will, after all, be the only candidate with double-Minger support.

Will these figures help to bounce the Cons into selecting Boris the same way they were bounced into picking Dave.

raincoaster said...

Seriously, they'd be fools to pick anyone else. Boris will win against Ken. That is all that a comptetent political organization cares about. They are amoral, campaign-winning machines if they function properly. The burden of competence is actually on the voters.

Depressing, eh?

raincoaster... spot on.

it would be hilarious to have ken watching from the sidelines as boris opens his olympics and blames the deficit squarely upon his puny shoulders.

I hope Boris wins and that the first thing he does will be to distance himself from the conservative central command and take an independant stand! A great way to do this would be to appoint a LIBDEM deputy (a sane one of course)!

quite the reverse. The venal opportunists are the ones you can trust - at least to do what's in their own best interests. The ones with 'a vision' and that mad glint in their eyes... now them, I worry about.

Preferably a Libdem that's not into £1.50 a minute telephone calls, eating dining out on others' leftovers, so to speak? I would imagine that dear old Boris would employ Myrna Bushell in a shot though.

Boris has more hair. It's a shoo-in.

raincoaster said...

Julian, that's a safe bet.(I originally typed "bed". Strange, what CAN I have been thinking?)

Nony 9:39 AM, my cynicism applies to the expectation that the voters will be moral, informed, and intelligent.

I told you so said...

Look, I'm up for a laugh as much as the next guy, and by christ laughs will be a-plenty if Boris is elected. But Boris won't get past the primary because at some stage he will be asked to describe, in detail and on his own, what he will do in various scenarios. Now the main reason we all like Boris (and I DO like Boris), is that he either refuses, or (more likely) is incapable of spouting the party line or give bog standard politician type replies including avoid answering the question etc. So in a way its a pity that his honesty will count against him, but on the other hand some of his honest answers are quite scary if he had any real position of power.
And I will tell you all that "I told you so".

Indeed, idealists are some of the most dangerous people in the world when given power. Except libertarian idealists who, unlike most idealists, actually believe in letting people make decisions for themselves.

Boris’ election is a certainty. Allowing Ken the crazed lefty to go unchecked for so long has had a ruinous effect on London. The money he wastes is phenomenal. Why does a London Mayor need offices in two provinces in China?

no, no and no. Just because Ken is a crazed dictator who is bringing London to its knees, doesn't mean he will not get voted in again, same thing applied when Thatcher did it against Kinnock. Boris is a novilty item, not a serious politician.

Julian at £1.50 per minute
I think the lib dem ginger minger could be somewhat of a bargain compared to ken , plus she would be too busy on the telephone to Boris to come up with any crackpot schemes to fleece Londoners.

Boris is it. I'll bet my pension on it. Since when did the role of London Mayor require the virtues of a serious politician? What is the role of London Mayor? Like it or not Boris ticks all the boxes!!!

Easy. Ken's record is terrible.

For example. last year it cost £140m to collect £252m from the congestion charge.

When he was stopped (by Labour) from issuing mega fines a midnight precisely, his income fell £20m to £89m DESPITE the charge going up from £5 to £8.

In the original projections, the C-Charge was supposed to generate £200m per year at £5. But then Green taxes don't actually work unless you keep driving and handing over the dosh...

And if you add in the capital costs of setting up the charge scheme (which the official accounts don't). Tory Ealing councillor Phil Taylor calculates that after a total spend of £930m (since 2001/2) the C-charge has made just £14m

Genius.

And the buses. Not only has Ken stuck with diesel (every other city in the world has changed to much less polluting gas power and London's pollution is worse than in 2001), the subsidy is over £650m per year.

In 1998, London buses made a £100k surplus.

Boris couldn't be worse. He might actually put some professionals in the key jobs, rather than washed up idealogues.

Question:If Hague couldn't save Hague how's he supposed to save Dave?

Red Ken of course seized power from Mackintosh, capitalised it and then took on Maggie. When outed he went into a sulk and managed to spin his tenure and make as if it was Maggie tossed him out for no reason. Then he became a whinging MP, demanding a London assembly and a whole horde of idiots voted for him.
The man is a scumbag who should be made to live in Caracas with his mate Hugo Chavez. They are suited to each other.

You're being spun, Guido. That's not right: it's your ability to see through everything which is why we love you.

First, this is a poll of everyone in the UK, not Londoners. Second, the Tories nationally run 5% ahead of where they are at in London at local elections. Third, someone between you and YouGov has conveniently excluded the Don't Know's at a whopping 28%. Fourth, none of the Lib Dem, UKIP, Respect, BNP or other candidates are included (unlike in an actual election). And fifth, YouGov did a straight choice (eg Norris vs. Livinsgtone; Johnson vs. Livingstone question) on the eve of poll and one week out in 2004. The final one of these said Norris 49%, Livingstone 51%. On the day, it was Livingstone 36%, Norris 29%.

old friend said...

Sorry, meant to say don't knows at a whopping 29%.

Boris trying to look serious is amusing. That's why people want him.

As someone said, this will be a contest between a clown trying to act serious, and someone who takes themselves seriously, but acts like a clown.

What does Ken get up to in Cuba where he spends his frequent holidays, rubbing shoulders with South American dictators?

Will it be Bonking Boris versus Kinky Ken?

Boris is the new Dick Whittington, turn again, Boris, Lord Mayor of London!

London's sick of the other miserable git. London wants Boz!

Er Lord Mayor?

If he gets in, I wouldn't be too surprised to see it reinstated. And maybe they'll get him a cat, too. (pun away, boys)

These early polls are interesting only in that they create a good debate ahead of the real contest beginning. It will be interesting to see who the LibDems will put up. I find it hard to believe that Lembit will make the jump from Montgomeryshire to London though.

Why shouldn't he? He's a cheeky boy.

Boris!

I mean the man is a legend - I want to go for a pint with the man but elect him? We'd have to be mad!

...oh.

James said...

At 177 people, this is hardly a poll. And, it has been "weighted" which will add to the Conservative share as ICM adjusts its numbers.

The real election, of course, is a multi-candidate affair. So I think we'll have to wait for a real poll.

Boris has lost his bike again.Just look for the facial horror when he remembers where he left it.

Garry Bushell has the support of 26,000 Cabbies, they hate Livingstone, and don't like Boris that much as he is a Toff from Oxfordshire.

If Boris is pro car he will become mayor by a mile.
