Boris should not stand for Mayor. Not because he might lose, but because he might win...

Boris adds to the gaeity of the nation but you wouldn't want to give the old duffer any power, he'd forget where he put Tower Bridge or something.

Many of the 83% are Labour supporters ...

It's not fair though. I voted before I realised that Sir Toby Belch from the CBI was available.

Boris is massively out of place in the vibrant new C0ns3rv4t1v3s under Diamond Dave. He's heterosexual, for a start, and he despised Bliar.

His Grace has communicated to Mr Johnson that he pledges to pray earnestly every day for his campaign if he decides to stand.

He awaits news...

A few comments left on Tory radio's podcast hotline as to why Boris should run - 0845 257 0 427 - space for more. Then we can get it over to Boris and make sure his hat is well and truly thrown into the ring.

You should open up that poll again; everyone's gone over to Boris' site and they've crashed the bloody forum. Off to Boriswatch then I guess.

83% back Boris to *run*, not "for Mayor". Many of those 83% may have been backing him to run, specifically to keep anybody like him out of the job.

"Sir Toby Belch from the CBI" has to be the best line this week.

Levy to be charged over cash for honours, say Blair's No 10 aides

Lord Levy will be charged in the "cash for honours" affair, according to close aides of Tony Blair. Members of the former prime minister's inner circle, who were closely involved in the nomination of millionaire Labour donors for honours, have told friends that they believe the peer will not escape prosecution.

Do another poll along the lines of "Do you think Boris would make a competent Mayor"? then see what response you get. Mind you, what the fuck do I care, I live about 600 miles form London!

Echoes Deistsynergy.

I'm sure this is deliberate and you can say you were just having a bit of fun, but this is exactly the kind of short-cut to find what you want that ended up with Newsnight troubles.

Boriswatch says William Hill has him at 8:1 to be mayor. If I could figure out how to use these damn Internet Tubes, I'd go over there and make myself some easy money.

Congrats Mrs and Mr Fawkes.

But more tax on booze! A vote-winner or not? (definitely not). The Tory Party, including Boris, seems to have wimped out and decided to implode into nannydom. Netto do a very decent Scotch at under seven quid. I can even hiccup in Scotch.

I agree with jonathanr. Boris could easily win. And I don't want him as mayor the next time the bombs start going off. Ken, despite so many many things, is London's best face to the world. He's our Giuliani and we don't even know it.

@xerxes: what, did he marry his cousin and move his mistress into the mayoral mansion while he was still married? Do tell.

Take it from a foreigner, Livingstone has essentially no profile in North America. He has never made the news here as far as I can tell. Never. Boris would.

As for who would be better at being mayor, I'm far more likely to support the offensive lefty than the offensive righty, but looking at who is going to win if it comes right down to it, I have to say Boris has the advantage. Yes, he's resented: in Portsmouth, in Liverpool, and in Papua New Guinea. But very few Portsmouthies, Liverpudlians, or Papuanians are eligible to vote in the London Mayoral race.

"Sir Toby Belch from the CBI"

Did he? Well I didn't hear it from here, but then I'm in Bristol.
