Early Election? Don't Think So...

Propellor-Head Wonk Watch: the appointment of Douglas Alexander to oversee preparations for the next general election might be seen by some as Brownite genius. Guido thinks that depends on how you view his overseeing of the recent election campaign where Labour lost control in Scotland for the first time in generations. Some think it could have been worse.

Guido remembers attending a Demos event last year where the new campaign commissar was giving his thoughts. With all this talk of an early election in the air the boys and girls at CCHQ and Cowley Street would do well to dig out his "Serving a Cause, Serving a Community" Demos pamphlet from last year. In it he urged the Labour party to work in partnership rather than parallel with like minded organisations including trade unions. Gordon is spinning today that he wants to reduce the power of the unions through one man, one vote.

He wrote about the party to becoming a "community hub" creating space for shared discussion with social interest groups who will have input into local party campaigns using blogs and chat rooms to encourage debate with those preferring not to go to formal party meetings. LabourHome is their best semi-unofficial attempt at this, and it still shaded by ConservativeHome.

He also claimed he wanted to throw off the control-freak shackles and loosen the rigid party structures to allow issues to be discussed informally and he wanted to decentralise professional party staff resources from national to local level. Once again the Tories have the edge here, they are far less control-freaky and they already have their Northern call-centre operation with regional offices benefiting from Lord Ashcroft's cash.

If the Demos pamphlet was Douglas Alexander's job application it will take time to achieve his goals for Labour. That together with their cash crisis, makes Guido doubtful they will go for an early election.

Too early?
Depends how quickly they can present a bill to make us pay for elections, and there'll be a lot of enthusiasm to get one on the books asap.

They really are a bunch of self-serving shits.

Eff me. This DPM prediction debacle is hitting you hard. Where's the certainty gone? PS - Enjoyed the description of Labour Home as "semi-unofficial". Guido of old would have called it "semi-official" or worse.

As you point out, Labour are skint. The early election nonsense is designed to wrong foot the Conservatives and try to get them to publicise more policies, so the Brown can nick the ideas for big headlines in the media, as he did with the Tories Localisation ideas recently. Not only only does he thieve your cash but he steals policies too.

old snotty wont call an election until he has rigged it,he wont risk the precious after only just getting it so standby for some serious bullshit from no10

If they can swing a £6000 party for an (unconvicted) criminal through onto the taxpayer then I bet they can swing their election costs without worrying too much.

I still have a nagging suspicion that the reason Blair caved in so easily and resigned was that Brown offered to pay off his mortgage on Connaught Square ...

... I like the wonk watch picture.

Gordo go soon? - I don't think so. He wants time to set up his greater democracy aspirations, ie to allow us all to agree with his decisions.

Anyway just think of all the time we now will have to admire his jaw movements when speaking.

Fascinating that Gordo's early experiences of bailing out those who saw him as a soft touch, now provide him with a moral purpose. Demonstrating that once a sucker, always a sucker?

yes Labour are skint thanks to the SNP folks

first time they have no cash the SNP whip em :-)

I agree with Iain Dale on this one Guido.

The first 100 days of the Brown Premiership will tell all and if the polls go in his favour I really think he could go in October.

I had no idea Douglas Alexander was a DJ

No way will Brown go to the polls earlier than he has to.
He is Mr Get Everything by Default. there is no way he is going to risk losing it by to the polls.

He will be in power until the very last moment, hoping against hope, that he has employed enough voters to see him back into 10 as the people's choice.

Socialists can't do local and decentralised - it's completely against their nature. Can you honestly imagine Gordon The Bogeyman relinquishing control of anything?

Didn't think so.

i'd rather douglas alexander was a full time transport secretary, god knows he has enough on his plate there.

Good move. Let this waffling lad be pushed to the sidelines. He'll screw up the election business but at least he won't screw up transport or something else.

Call it schadenfreud.

Tonight's hatchet job on Brown by the excellent John Ware on the Panorama programme shows that, now they have him where they want him, certain sections of the media are going to crucify the incoming Prime Minister.

Let us hope that David Cameron has the gumption to take advantage of this.

but he would never drop a bogey - the mean git

Im sure gordo can pfi the money he needs or get a provident loan amounts to the same thing realy.perhaps his private equity friends will buy labour sack all the wonks then sell it for scrap four years thats all they need.

Richard Havers said...

Two things.

Brown will be too worried to take the chance and will at least want a few years of vain glory to cling to his body like Scot's mist.

There's also the little matter of Levy. As much as GB will wriggle and say, "it's all Tony's fault", it's not really going to wash is it?

lunchtime o'sleaze said...

Judging from tonight's Panorama it looks like Gordon's honeymoon was short and sweet.

Let battle commence. Old cyclops won't know what's hit him before too long.

As the former No. 10 adviser said: Brown will be the first PM to go mad while in the job.

Anonymous said...

Brown will go in September, and he'll win. Then the Tories can dump drippy Dave and start to find a proper leader.

Let's see how the Bogeyman deals with the devastating floods which hit England today (poor old Sheffield).
People are already asking why the flood defences are so pathetic-could it be that NuLab had better uses for the taxpayers money-such as saving Afghanistan or alleviating famine in Africa? Also , folk are asking -where is our army ?-answer-all abroad , saving the world.
When will the English learn that this shower of s**t called Liebour despises them?

anon 9.44... you're just another desperate Brownite anonymong full of wishful thinking and bullshit.

Your rocking horse riding nappy boy Brown is in the firing line now, he's in the spotlight, he can't keep running away like he did as Chancellor. He's not up to the job, he's a screwed up bag of neuroses, and before too long he will crack under the pressure.

Anonymous said...

Flood defences !! Haven't you read this current edition of Private Eye yet, man ?? Look in the Down on the Farm section, written by Muckspreader

If he is to be believed, the £ 350m fine from Europe for failing to return our 'own money' in the form of subsidies to our farmers, due to the appalling balls up at the Rural Payments Agency is to blame.

Margaret Buckett's DEFRA dept. made such an utter balls up of it that Europe fined us - But GORDON BROWN [who he?] said there was no way he was going to stump up the readies from central government funds, so DEFRA [presumably now under the reins of the boy wonder Milibland] would have to find the dosh.

This, it seems, they have done by making savings on, er, flood defences, and fucking over the British Waterways people and taking the dosh they were going to use to improve the country's canals.

If you aren't subscribing to the Eye, then ask yourself why the bloody hell not ? The Original and still the Best for sleaze - don't leave home without it etc. etc.

actually candid camera I'm a Tory not a liberal conservative a Tory and proud of it, shame Cameron isn't !!!

Madasafish said...

Why should GB pass up 3 years with a solid majority - and a bunch of tosspots as the Official Opposition - and possibly lose it all. After all he's waited long enough.

Mind you most Conservatives are so dumb they probably believe 1. there will be an election and 2. they can win it.

I see neither as a short term realistic scenario..

tapestry said...

Necessary tactic to keep the threat of an election going. It keeps Conservative strategists jumpy, but far more important, it suppresses dissent in his own team.

Now he's looking at Lib Dems for ministers, selling out to Europe, and cutting off trades unions from policy, Brown knows he could have some major rebellions brewing up. The threat of an election keeps his MPs in check somewhat.

As for Panorama, if that was a hatchet job I'm a Dutchman. What about buying a seat for Ed, what about The Sith. Just the Beeb pretending to be proper journalists without overstepping the bounds of convention. Pathetic.

Its great that tomorrow England will have its second gay, scots prime mimister. Here in Scotland we are only on our first. Just goes to show that when it comes to brownhatters there's one law for the house of commons (reg. office, Hampstead Heath) and another for we Scotchmen. Typical.

Better get Wee Dougie out of the firing line for a bit. The hapless former student political hack is as welcome in Scotland as King Edward I after the election debacle, and most of the sharpened knives are being wielded by what remains of Scottish Labour. Of course, Wee Dougie joins a long list of ineffectual transport ministers as well, probably vying with Prescott for the title of the most useless one.
