H4L : How Much is Hain's Campaign Costing?

Hain, being ex-Liberal party lacks grassroots Labour support, hence his reliance on SpAds and lobbyists to run his campaign. Rank and file members are very tribal - he isn't trusted.

Despite having an effectively taxpayer subsidised campaign he still has some spending to do. And according to this document that has been passed to Guido he plans to spend little short of a cool six-figures on his campaign.

The campaign's expenditure summary can be downloaded here.

Notice no allowance made for mobile phones and Blackberries (SpAds have government issued mobiles and Blackberries, you pay for them). Hain is pressing the flesh everywhere he goes and putting the travel down to ministerial expenses (you pay again) he is hosting drinks parties for journalists (as a minister of course, nothing to do with the leadership battle, you pay for that as well).

But who is coughing up for Hain's expensive campaign? Sleazy lobbyist Steve Morgan is running the show...

There are fewer people more generous with money than those who haven't had to earn it.

Hmm. No listing for Cuprinol Paint 'n Grain, which I would have expected to see.

Blair claims Labour has a good springboard to win the next general election.

I think he must get his springboards from these guys:

Isn't giving hospitality to journalists with the intention of influencing their coverage a criminal offence under the Prevention of Corruption Acts? Do we know which journalists have attended? Would they go canary in exchange for not being prosecuted themselves? (Both the giving and the receiving of a bribe being a criminal offence, and because a government official the burden of proof that this isn't corrupt falls on the defendants [PCA 1916].)

Hain is being bankrolled by Lord Browne....

Tone made me do it - he's a bad influence said...

Perhaps Mr Hain should, spiderman-like, get his "double" outfit out of the wardrobe and go and rob a bank.

With "BOSS" no longer in existence to and cctv arround he needs to be more carefull.....

anon 6.06pm - is "bankrolled" a euphemism for somthing a little more intimate?

I have this theory about Peter Hain.

He's not real. He's playing it for laughs right down to his perma-tan, he couldn't give a fuck because it's all an absurd joke and if the wheels fall off so what?

His is a whole life joke.

Hain is not trusted because he is untrustworthy. He goes off message regularly. Sometimes every time he opens his mouth. This can be a strain on his colleagues' eyebrow stability. At Brighton 05 it seemed as if his autocue was tampered with to make him seem incoherent and incompetent ... either that he was er incoherent and incompetent.

And I like the man. But DL? Wild horses etc.

What's all this about treating journalists? Don't some reptiles of the press keep their alcohol level up almost entirely with lobbies, ligs and launches?

Oh, come on! is he supposed to stay at home?

Oh, what an achingly good idea! And isn't 'home' South Africa? Surely Mr Mbeki could use Mr Hain's talents - if he could find them.

I'm having a collection for Hain.
I've put in 5 Litres. Anyone else like to contribute?

Who is Steve Morgan and why is he sleazy?

machiavelli said...

He's as sleazy as a particularly slimey slug smoking a fat Cuban cigar and banging a crack whore

Watch Peter Hain very carefully. No only is he very slippery but he is also Nulabour. That should say it all.
