Benn Backed by International Capitalism
Guido is still reeling from the news that the grandson of the socialist Viscount Stansgate has a large portfolio of stock market investments. Now he discovers that his campaign is backed by the profiteering of international capital. Hedge fund manager Gilad Hayeem of Lehman Brothers backed Marble Bar Asset Management (Cayman) has contributed £5,000 to Hilary Benn's campaign (slogan "voice of the grassroots"). Tony Benn wanted to nationalise top banks, his son takes campaign donations from them.Guido can personally vouch for the rum nature of these hedgie types. Still trying to figure out if this is a case of a capitalist financing the rope to hang himself, or of a socialist selling out. With a billion dollars under management Gilad can spare the cash. However, how idealistic Benn backers will view his campaign being financed indirectly by investors in Erongo Energy - a uranium miner in Namibia with interests in oil - is hard to say. All ethical presumably...

Somebody in the Westminster Village wants to shit on him in the open, eh Guido?
Why am i not suprised
I see the whole of the Margaret Hodge thread has disappeared.
Has Big Brother been leaning on you again, Guido?
"a uranium miner in Namibia with interests in oil"

The father was a fool and the son is just unspeakable.

It makes perfect sense for a hedge fund to donate 5,000 (i assume he only put in 500 quid and borrowed the rest)to stop the Hain campaign!
...old news guido, chiz, chiz. i distinkly remember reading this (an more)in Private Eye (No.1185) last weds.
it seem hislop1 hav the jump on you as per usual.
...eermm..
Name just one genuine socialist leader in the last century who followed and was guided by his own fiscal mantra. Tossers, to a man (or woman - sorry Melissa!)

Kafka,
Err no it hasn't, so no.
Molesworth,
Didn't read the Eye, but doubt the details of the investment were in there.
Hey, so Namibian uranium miners steal water, poison the environment and disposes poor innocent tribesmen of their ancestoral land. It's only desert anyway, so like, who cares? So long as Wedgie Benn III gets his cut. This is NuLabour after all.

Surely that is ethical with today's New Labour mantra that nuclear energy is now a good thing. As for the oil interests, well technically I have 'interests in oil' since I have a substantial block of Shell and BP shares. Certainly not the first to jump to another squalid sociali(s)te's defence but, as many might say, isn't this a teeny bit of a non-starter?
Would hazard that Gilad might have afforded dropping a few Jeffreys into Benn's hands as the rest of us might regard dropping 50p in some awful Leicester Square busker's hat.
I never agreed with Tony Benns politics apart from his stand on the Iraq war but I have always respected him but his son is just a little turd!!!
Private Eye, No. 1185
Hilary Benn meanwhile is promising he will be a deputy leader who "ensures that the voice of the members and affiliated unions is heard in the government" and represents "the voices of the grassroots". So why is he so dependent on property developers and bankers? He is funded with £10,000 from Kevin McGrath of development firm REITS Asset Management. McGrath, Eye readers will recall, has given more than £100,000 to the party since 2005. This may be because his business uses a tax break called Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS) that Gordon Brown created for property developers.
Benn is also campaigning with £5,000 from Gilad Hayeem, chief executive of a multi billion pound hedge fund called Marble Asset Management. So not very "grassroots Labour" at all.
Harriet Harman wins tonights battle on Newsnight by a mile. The rest of them were utterly hopeless, particularly Benn, Johnson, and Cruddas.
Oh come now Guido you were, at best, mere plankton of the hedge fund world...
as far Marble Bar - well, we will see how they survive the next downswing. I wouldn't be an investor...
Now the question is what Swiss-American financial concern has dear Tony been interviewing with?
