Doughty Street Moves Away from Tory TV
As Doughty Street heads towards a more commercial footing, ConservativeHome's Tim Montgomerie is moving out to become a programme producer in a separate unit, which backer Stephan Shakespeare thinks will enable the station "to develop as a truly independent, commercial broadcaster of non-partisan, interactive and innovative political, news and current affairs programmes."The technology is proven and the emphasis is now on making the channel pay for itself with a less partisan nightly news programme. "That doesn’t mean we shall be less opinionated, but it does mean we will be giving more opportunities to people with different perspectives" Iain Dale says. Guido thinks that the recruitment of Peter Tatchell and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown as presenters will definitely take the online broadcaster in a new direction.

... but is it a direction in which any sane person would want to go?
If it means Tim Montgomery won't be doing any more 'presenting' then it has to be a good thing.
Yes the world is just crying out for Tatchell on TV.
I cannot believe that somebody has put money in to this expecting a cash return.
If Stephan Shakespeare is serious about earning from this he should employ The Hitch to sit on a sofa in Doubty street, in his underpants reviewing porn films and weaponry.
In fact bollocks to that I will just turn my webcam on and charge people to watch me going about my normal business and cut out the middleman
Peter Tatchell and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. eh ?.
Each having established reputations for their non-partisan views.
Hitch, thank you again for making me laugh out loud.
The sad fact is that the professional media industry is entirely dominated by lefties. Even if they start off as Conservatives (like Andrew Marr) they soon see the error of their ways when they see which monopolies butter their bread.
Please not Yasmin... I refuse to watch.
SB,
Was Andrew Marr ever a Conservative? Do you mean Nick Robinson perhaps?
Just because a presenter happens to be partisan, whiffler, does not mean that the overall output of a channel on which they appear must be.
Taleban Tim's peculiar social conservatism will not be missed.
You could show them your rimfire Hitch. That would make good family entertainment, probably keep Mr Tatchell at a safe distance too I reckon.
I don't believe I'm 'earing this. You're 'aving a larf, you are.
I 'ad that Peter Tatchell in the back of me cab once.....
sorry my cab
We was taught proper at grammar school
This is clearly bargain basement stuff. Peter Tatchell might make a fist of it - who knows, but as for
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Ms Renta-Rant? Maybe this is going to be the new hit comedy that will surpass 'The Office' for driving viewers behind the sofa.
Sounds like a load of cobblers to keep Ofcom out of their hair.
I believe that the the lefty Thought Police were lobbying for internet TV channels to come under the Guardianistas at Ofcom's control. (no doubt looking at Doubty Street) Which means anything seen as obviously politically partisan, isn't allowed, unless you support the Labour Party or Islamo-fascists of course!
Or they could be paving the way for a future shift to a Satelite Channel (then Ofcom would be interested), as Sky has loads of bandwith for all manner of non-mainstream channels, not sure how much a spot on the Sky EPG costs, but it might be worth it, at least for a trial period.
Tatchell on TV well thats going to get loads of viewers isn't it. His and Outrage's latest bomb Iran into the stoneage campaign suggests he is moving rightwards and joining the neocons. Perhaps as an old peacenik Peter thinks bombing Iranian is morally justified whereas bombing the Vietnamese was morally wrong. In which case they need more lady-boys in Iran me thinks - quick.
Why Yasmin?! Tatchell at least has something sensible to say sometimes and doesn't come across as an arrogant moaner with a chip on his shoulder.
Alibi Brown? Strewth! And Tim Montgomerie - is he the one with the speech impediment?
Geezer,
For a small channel like 18DS, hovering around the back of the listings somewhere, an EPG listing would cost somewhere in the region of £75,000 per annum- sounds like a fair price for moving Taleban Tim off-screen to keep Ofcom/ the rest of the world happy... :)
I suppose there's a certain attraction in having all the repulsive misfits and malcontents under one roof. Shakespeare should consider approaching David Aaronovitch and Nick Griffin who'd fit into the new regime very nicely I feel.
This channel will cease to exist before long; just seeing the phrase "pay for itself" is enough send shivers down the spines of everyone involved. Doomed. I wish there was a betfair market on this one....
well whenever that bastard dale is ready the void is ready
he keeps hinting at it and then bottling out
libertairians vs anarchists was the last email i got, you up for the ruck guido?
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown wasn't even born here but that doesn't stop her constantly telling us how we should behave. As if she would know.
And Peter Tatchell? Yes I agree he sometimes has something useful to say the trouble with these two it is again a case of the tip of the tail wagging the dog. Minute minorities telling us what to do, feel, think.
Whereis the people who should be on this are people who the Establishment constantly ban from TV who have important contributions to make. What about real people? You know the majority of this country who do real work, are not talking heads and actually know what they are talking about? What about them for a change instead and put the Independent back into British Broadcasting.
I agree with anon re Alibhai-Brown. Her opinions are surplus to requirements.
I do hope that Doughty Street doesn't risk the fan base it's already built up. I would certainly switch off if people such as Tatchell are allowed to set the agenda.
Having just had a flick through some of the past programmes, the idea that it's a non-partisan site is laughable. It's basically nothing but Iain Dale interviewing Conservative councillors, isn't it ?
Hi Kimmitt and others,
Here's a couple of other programmes that we have:
The Media and Climate Change and Degrees in Alternative Medicine (Claire Fox News)
Days of Glory and Media Coverage of the Royal Navy Hostages (Culture Clash)
So, as you will see, we already do offer a wide range of topical programming beyond the high quality interviews we also have. That is going to expand and develop into very high quality current affairs and politics programming.
Furthermore, with the launch of Citizen Journalism it is you the viewer that has the chance to shape 18 Doughty Street with your reports, documentaries or even programmes you make yourself. Just make sure they're appropriate for a general audience.
Yours,
Mike Rouse
