Mirror's Maguire Brown-Nosing Into Downing Street

Kevin Maguire fantasises that he will be the Alastair Campbell of the Brown regime. He has Campbell's old job as political editor at the Mirror and certainly sucks up to Gordon enough to make himself a candidate to follow his predecessor's footsteps. Guido saw Maguire at the Milburn / Clarke website launch and wondered if he was actually there reporting or spying. It is also noticeable that of late he has been putting himself about giving "media training" to Labour party candidates and is increasingly seen at regional party events.

As well as practising his Brown-nosing at the Mirror, he is part of the New Statesman / Sith nexus, so it is no surprise that he was one of the few hacks to quote the recent discredited "Opinion Leader" poll. Maguire soothed Brownite nerves in the Mirror last week
the poll that really counted this week may prove to be an Opinion Leader Research survey of senior public figures. Political heavyweight Brown was judged to "believe" what he says by 87 per cent, lightweight Cameron by 59 per cent.
Maguire claims the poll that mattered wasn't either of the two field-tested four-figure population polls from ICM and Communicate research, it was the one organised by Gordon's pollster, Deborah Mattinson, of 100 carefully selected "opinion leaders". Does he really believe what he writes?

If Maguire gets to be Brown's spinmeister don't expect a highbrow moral tone from the man who this week wrote of often dreaming of Margaret Thatcher's death and how "back home on Tyneside at the weekend, I found many a Labour voter eagerly awaiting the day [the] former premier is dead and buried." Strangely yesterday morning on Marr's BBC show he didn't recount his dreams to Carol Thatcher - who was sharing the sofa with him. Now that would have really livened things up.
When not dreaming of Carol's mother's death he calls Cameron "Druggie Dave, the Bambi Killer", which may be fair comment or an indication of the nature of the coming Brown onslaught on the poll favourite. If Brown appoints Maguire it will signal that he intends to fight a dirty, class-based political struggle which appeals to Labour's activists - a style reflected in Kevin's journalism that has helped the Mirror lose 25% of its readers since 1997. Can he do for his party what he has done for his paper?

Ha, ha! Rattled your cage over the weekend, did he? I saw what Maguire had to say about you in the latest New Statesman.

How do you respond? With a 'Brownite in Brownite behaviour shock' scoop. Cutting edge stuff, Guido. Maguire must be shaking in his boots. Did you send him a threatening email as well? I framed mine.

IPRESUME WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE REAL

Kevin McGuire
(double bass & vocal)

Raised in the Scottish Borders town of Peebles, Kevin has recorded and toured for a decade with ..... Most recently he has performed with Blazin Fiddles as a member of the popular With Strings Attached folk-pop touring project, and as a member of Eddi’s solo band. He is also a member of the acclaimed Scottish folk big band The Usual Suspects and much in demand as a session player.

A word from Kev:

"The musician I'd most like to invite over for tea is ... Watson.

A piece of music that really moves me is Shetland fiddle tune "Da Day Dawn".

One album I'll never get tired of is Josh Rouse's "1972".

The thing I like best about being a musician is going to amazing places and meeting people you'd never get to meet any other way: from the wee kids we met in a mountain village built into a rockface in Oman to singing in an ancient chapel in Armenia."

If this twat starts a "class war" based campaign Labour are fucked.

Maguire is employed by the BBC as a regular contributor to 5Live's Drive programme. His conversations with Peter Alan usually follow the same pattern:
PA: What's going to be in tomorrow's paper Kevin?
KM: Cameron's rubbish/a toff/no match for Brown/etc...
Sometimes he alternates with Andrew Pierce of the Times and the conversation goes:
PA: What's going to be in tomorrow's paper Andrew?
AP: Cameron's rubbish/a toff/no match for Brown/etc...

It is interesting that Guido should hold Kevin Maguire responsible for the Mirror's 25% drop in circulation since 1997 given that Mr Maguire was Chief Reporter for the Guardian up until 2004. How did he manage it, I wonder?

Border Reiver said...

Having just read the New Statesman piece by Maguire I was amazed. It read more like a schoolboy/rag week mag of years ago than (serious?) political journalism. No wonder the Mirror's circulation has gone down.

If that's the sort of stuff he's going to do for Gordo then we can only say.....bring him on.

"back home on Tyneside at the weekend, I found many a Labour voter eagerly awaiting the day [the] former premier is dead and buried."

perhaps he did not share this with Carol because, if he had REALLY been out in the Bigg Market he would have found that the word 'former' is supernumerary in the above sentence!

To be fair to McGuire, you have to judge him by the competition and, Rawnsley apart (and Daisy is not TOO dim), they're a pretty rum crew. Marr....Robinson....Mrs Marr.... makes you long for 'Mrs Robinson' in a Hoffmanesque manner.

Finlelstein...Aaronovitch...... Why do our papers and TV channels provide charitable homes for student politicians who refused to ever grow up? And then that's back to Robinson!

At some unearthly hour this morning, I found on the TV Ann Leslie and Steve Richards talking across each other interminably, with some third party looking on bewildered while they tossed the single brain cell between them. Where DO they find these people who know absolutely NOTHING about politics but think they do?

Ann Leslie managed to totally kill the point that old people like Ming Campbell can still have sharp knives in their cutlery tray by making direct camparisons with herself who is of a most similar age. Bring back John Junor, all is forgiven!!! Steve Richards managed to state some bizarre 'givens' about 'hung parliaments' because someone called Steve Richards told him that they were so. And, apparently, Ming Campbell agrees with him in that 'Alan Milliburn agrees with Gordon Brown' sort of way.

Pass the sick bucket Alice!

Tuscan Tony said...

..and here's Kev's insightful take in to the loans-for-lordships email leak:
"For what it's worth, I don't believe most of the so-called leaks on what the Premier may or may not have done come from the boys in blue. They are from Tories, dozens of whom have been interviewed in the investigation and make mischief with info they picked up during questioning."

Mischief making Tories it was then, Kevin. Presumably operating from No. 10 Downing Street, hidden behind a sofa.

He's a none-too-bright jobbing hack whose mediocrity is compounded by chronic class chippiness. Given the various personal messes he's got himself into (more news to follow on that) I reckon he'd self-destruct within six months.

In the final analysis though little Kev is no Ali Campbell but a lightweight getting in out of his depth. If he seriously intends hitching his wagon to Brown's failing campaign the Blairites have enough ammo on him to shoot his wheels off.

Re Opinion Leader Research poll, the Market Research Society code of conduct has exacting standards with regard to opinion polling, for example:

'Q11 If the interviewer has a strong political leaning, is it not possible for them to sway the respondent?

A11 It is possible – but they would soon get caught out, and would be subject to severe disciplinary action. Professional interviewers are trained to exclude bias from the questions they ask, and indeed from every stage of the research, including sample selection. They also frequently have their techniques assessed by a supervisor.

The MRS Code of Conduct governs acceptable interview practice and all MRS members must abide by the Code. A researcher’s failure to abide by it may result in disciplinary action against them.' (ref - www.mrs.org.uk/media/opinionpolls.htm)

If anyone has a mind to register a formal complaint, then please refer to this page - www.mrs.org.uk/standards/complain.htm.

If the MRS invalidate the research, then Mr Maguire & The Mirror (and other papers) may be required to issue a retraction statement.

Nasty, embittered, envious & devious, I very much hope Cameron's team have the correct plan to deal with the bile and vitriol Brown is planning.
Surely, they must be the polar opposite, give credit where it's due, a balanced approach etc.

Brown is such an uncertain political operator his nerve will crack if Cameron survives the first three/six months of his annointment as celtic PM.
Obviously the Brown Broadcasting Corporation will be in there pitching for Brown but this politician has a very soft underbelly, chronic uncertainty.

What pisses me off about the oik

People like Maguire must be positively encouraged to exercise their views and opinions about everything at every single opportunity. Only in this way can people in this country come to realise how truly awful life under Blabour has become for many and how much worse it may become under Brown and his tame poppinjays. Like Guido says, if this chap can bring down The Mirror in such a way that even the late Cap'n Bob must be gazing down in celestial envy at him, then who knows what he will be able to do to a whole country as spinner in chief.

Strikes me that all Brown is bring to the party is a bunch of no-hopers who are working on the basis of "buggins' turn" at being in power ... kind of like what would have happened at the last US election had John Kerry been voted in.
