DD Says "NO2ID"
David Davis has written to the Cabinet Secretary,
Sir Gus O'Donnell, giving formal notice that an incoming Conservative administration will scrap ID Cards. He has also written to all the major contractors* warning them of the same.
Sir Gus O'Donnell, giving formal notice that an incoming Conservative administration will scrap ID Cards. ID-cards may be popular in some quarters, but one section of the population is 101% opposed to ID-cards. LibDem activists.
Come election time the LibDems will be shoulder-to-shoulder with the Tories on an issue that emphasises their shared ideological belief in the fundamental primacy of individual liberty against state power. New Labour's authoritarians will be the common enemy.

Reason enough to vote Conservative, even if the rest of their policies leave you cold.
Be an idea to have a DHSS card though. We all need to pay less tax.
That's right... split the vote, and Labour will win again.
Yes perhaps at the same time we could annul all naturalisations and grants of citizenship issued after 1997 until thoroughly reviewed by an independent Panel (not one made up of Asylum seekers aka The Home Office), using all the money saved on ID cards we could ensure that the people actually legally allowed to be here or who are British Citizens are the holders of Legal Passports and not counterfeit or those sold on a Latvian or Nigerian market stall.
If we are setting up independent panels to investigate the home office, can we have one to investigate the fraudulent work permits issued to overseas IT staff between 2000 and 2005 that put so many British professionals out of work? At one point there were over 30 thousand ‘on the bench’ while the home office were issuing permits at the rate of 100 per day.
anon...that was probably on the warped assumption that most IT professionals in the UK would be conservative as opposed to overseas Techies being more Labour leaning and thankful to NuLabour for giving them work.
Was that 100 per day (or 4 in binary) sorry couldn't resist.
Cromwell I like your idea, although I would go further and announce that all illegal immigrants* and all bogus asylum* seekers not out of the country within 30 days would be subject to summary execution folowed by being rendered down into cat food.
*Attractive large breasted eastern european women are of course exempt from any such law.
It's all a bit of Tory spin.
I have tons of ID cards in my wallet already - Driving License, Passport, NHS card, NI card, Credit Cards and my well used Scores membership card.
Since my movements are tagged by Ken Livingstone, O2 keeps a watch of my mobile phone calls, Sky monitors my TV habits, my IT geeks track all my computer strokes and I am filmed 30 time a day by those really useful CCTV cameras that keep PC plod off the street, I don't think an ID card will make much difference.
Fantastic news - at least some real progress on putting the kybosh on this ID cards nonsense. This could be a vote winner appealing to both the 'civil liberties' liberals, and the 'stop pi$$!ng our money up against the wall' traditionalists.
It is about time they rustled up a few more policies like this - sensible, but with wide appeal.
PHitch - another excellent plan to have them scurrying back from whence they came would be to withdraw the protection of the law from those non-resident bloodsuckers who transgress the law - I'd be happy to help you organise an Asylum Seeker cull, which would be much more entertaining than paintballing, with the obvious benefits of revenues from the subsequent sales of any undamaged organs and eyes. Would be very environmentally friendly recycling-wise, and meet and exceed the donor/transplant target immediately so I reckon should get the support of La Hewitt for sure.
finbar,
If you want O2 to stop monitoring, just change provider or go payg. If you want Ken to stop tracking you, get a payg oyster and pay for it by cash (all those credit card payments are a neat link back to the holder...haha). Why you buy Sky is beyond me.
The fact is, the ID card is the equivalent of Sky being legally able to force you to use their machine for all TV or internet content and phone network too. No other providers and you have to pay for the privilege.
Deal, or no Deal?
If we could get a job-lot of microlights from France or wherever they make them, and issue them to the illegals, we could make the cull a driven shoot. Standing on a beach shooting at game flushed off the cliffs above is terrific sport. If we did this in Kent, any plucky illegal that managed to dodge the fusillade would be well on his way to the Continent already. He might even get the deposit back on the microlight in France to help him with his onward travel costs.
Rather than the Lib Con alliance they can be called the 'toff party I guess?
Finbar said I don't think an ID card will make much difference.
Apart from the unknown £billions bunged to Blair's chums you mean? I never thought the id card scheme would be workable in any case, but scrapping the plan would get my vote. It would mean I wouldn't have to go to jail after all as I had no intention of registering, whatever the consequences.
ID cards are only the tip of the iceberg - it's the relational database that is the truly monstrous intrusion into personal privacy - and I notice it doesn't get mentioned.

What an absurd idea, then we would have felines pouring in from across the channel taking our jobs, homes and pussies. Of course there would be exemptions as you mention unless the Equality Act dashes that idea..
Anonymuppet 6:37pm - eerrrrmm....since when were Aslyum Seekers a race? Not that I've ever noticed but perhaps you could enlighten me. And did I refer to British residents in my comment, which includes substantial numbers of non-whites? No, I said non-residents. Anyways, I would be 100% pro fully open borders once the welfare state is dismanted to avoid any misunderstanding as to why people come to the UK - the views of a racist? I also have noticed that those baying loudest for the admission of the trash of the world to England are not those who have to cut the cheque for it, me hearty. It may be unfashionable in this strange nulab period but in my last 4 years in Blighty I paid more tax than average Joe Public pays in a lifetime, the family all the while on BUPA, so for some odd reason I feel I shouild have more odf a say, than someone who beetles down to labour exchange once a fortnight to collect some of my hard earned cash forcibly anbd involuntarily taken from me. Would be interesting to see what happened if voting power was weighted in favour of net economic contributors, rather than allowing people to vote themselves pay rises and benefits - a sort of latter-day Scargill mentaility that seems to be enjoying a resurgence, incidentally. Anyway, who is this other alleged racist poster to whom you refer - Not PHitchens by any chance?
idle 647pm - like the concept, like it very much. Save having to travel down to the West Country to find those high birds. I resent paying £ 28-£34 plus VAT per pheasant, I reckon that with the income from organ sales we could offer a bounty of £ 500 a seeker, though of course a share of revenues should be used to would cover the costs of a decent lunch, in the style of Gentlemens' London gambling clubs of the 1950s.
Tuscan...yes but you know with any Asylum Seeker cull that some Labour Donor would have his company providing the details and co-ordinates, probably bio-metrics...do you really want to feather the nest of a big K or a big P.
Oi! You lot! Stop preening!
I repeat - ID cards mean bugger all if you can still be tracked by a combination of cell phone, car number plate, travel card, credit/bankers card, facial recognition software on security cameras, etc. all linked and backed up by a DNA database that will in a few years include the majority of the population.
Another little warning in the press over the weekend - plod plan to trawl through the DNA database to identify individuals via their close relatives.
Feel happy about that?
A bounty on migrants - a wonderful idea!
Back in 2000 the IT company Xansa was offering their staff £1,000 for each British IT professional they could identify to be replaced by someone from the Indian sub-continent.
We could have a bounty on jobs that could be filled by a British person that is currently filled with someone on a work permit.
Boys boys ID cards please
bt...okay, okay we see you. Actually I think having the details on ever aspect of peoples identity, movements, spending habits is a great idea, not only does is generate work for the poor out of work IT crowd to build it but it also means the State has total control so then all I do is usurp the State then I have it...but as I'm an extinctionist who thinks we should give the planet back to the animals and get rid of the talking monkeys you might prefer to stick with Sky.
So they throw out a few scraps of hope and you all jump for it ,nice one
Goodness, just think - if a company could collect all of your consumer activity data together they might use it for sending targeted direct mail that might entice you to buy more of the same products from them! Heck, don't tell Tesco.
Oh. Too late.
Actually, if ID cards ever did come in, clearly Tesco would be the perfect partner to administer them - they have the experience and I might get free vouchers for my groceries every time a speed camera flashes.

Forget the cat food.
Go for pig swill.
OK, Tuscan. All we need to do now is decide upon the dates for the culling season and start crossbreeding labradors and great danes so that efficient retrieval from land and water can be enjoyed.
We'll need a president of our sporting society, of course. The Duke of Edinburgh springs to mind.
Er... wasn't this an issue which David Davis was somewhat equivocal about at the last General Election?
Mr Tuscan
Not so sure about the organ trade.
Like everything else the chinese could undercut us on price , although I hear that after a Chinese organ transplant you are ready for another 30 minutes later! (+:
...and on that note, it's goodnight from Tuscany, with me wondering why my first comment was deleted by the blog owner. P'raps with hindsight it was altogether too mild and rational.
"Indian IT workers"
[OT again 'fraid]
Most work very hard. Some are even quite good. It's much better to in-source - so you can keep an eye on them.
I don't buy the 'stealing our jobs' argument - sounds too ... socialist.
8:46 PM
Its true Guido , lots of UK IT Contractors got the bump.
@8:49
Yes - but primarily due to post-bubble blues I think.
There were *many* contractors at the peak who were just chancers. Anyone half-decent always had the option to fall back to a permie post.
If only the same visa policies were applied to Doctors - then we could get some Indians for £40K and save ourselves a bit of cash.
Yes but none of this solves the problem of the enemy within. No point culling Asylum Seekers unless we also root out the home grown Islamic Extremists, which is most of'em, and expel/cull/curry them too!
The more lateral thinkers amongst us, having seen the ID card possibility on the horizon, have been accumulating alternative identities for the past couple of decades with lots of lovely bits of collateral like bank, savings & building society accounts, the odd driving licence, medical card etc. One ID card is dangerous. A multiplicity of them opens a world of possibilities because once obtained it unlocks all the advantages of the modern digital society.
Those who have missed out on the bonanza could consider forgoing bathing and shaving for a couple of weeks, the investment of a couple of quid with Oxfam for a suit from their mid 80's collection and possibly cultivating a slight Irish burr. Pass word around that you will be going away for a few days, bid farewell to your loved ones, take yourself down to the local high street, pitch a brick through the window of your favourite store, sit down and wait for the eventual arrival of the police.
A couple of hours in the cells and your newly appointed social worker will be arranging for the issue of an ID card in any name you care to make up and an appointment to collect your social security payment.
"incoming Conservative administration will scrap ID Cards."
. . . .and install ice-skating rinks in Hell, apparently.
I see no problem with asylum-seekers or illegals who are not living off the state.
I would rather export our "home-grown" perma-unemployed. Send 'em over to Iraq for reconstruction jobs.
8:59 PM
Most sites even now are run with a few perms and mostly contractors ,one minute you work next bye bye ,options to work as a permie , you must be kiddin, have a look at the IT jobs Market yourself and see how many perms
@9:31
Well IT is a broad market. Maybe that's true where you work but I've been in places that absolutely refuse to take contractors.
I'm in favour of a database for criminals, lunatics, Moslems and bogus asylum seekers, but why should the rest of us be on it?

Gordon Brown via the HMRC introduced an edict called IR35, which decimated the UK IT contractor market.
He then issued 137,000 indian IT work permits each year for 5 years. He was happy enough to brag about it in his speech in Bangalore last month.
Most of the imported workers have been employed by the software companies and consultancies working on the government IT projects.
Clever plan, destroy your own people, import cheap labour, get the work done for half the price. Except, most of the IT projects have gone wrong, not been finished, and in the case of the Libra project, the one to join up all the courts, still not finished after 16 years and no one knows how much its cost.
Ive always wondered how many secret projects have been going on, possibly with some of the Sith companies, wondered where Gordon has spent all the money, knowing that when they finished, they just send them back to india, and no one here knows what they been doing.
David Davis is of course correct, "one Parliament may not bind a subsequent Parliament".
However, any contract entered into with 3rd parties, is on behalf of the CROWN and not government in parliament.
Its this sort of fucked up thinking that got us into the European Union.
For god sake when will the conservative party ever learn.
Perhaps he needs to read a copy of the EC Convention on the Law Applicable to Contractual Obligations
Article 17 - No retrospective effect.
Errr... sorry to spoil the backslapping - the Tories support road charging and being tracked by the E.U.s' Galileo Satellite....This is typical of the Tory career tarts who do nothing out of principal and simply follow the latest focus groups or the opportunism of the bandwagon.
UKIP
Read it and weep potato head , you will not be PM
As posted on 18 Doughty Street / Guido tonight:
Do you think that David Davis's comments on Identity Card reflect our natural suspicion, best summarised as:
"Quis custodes custodiet?"
Kind regards

I have an eye for the detail you know.........
Who watches the Watcher Plato or some other guy
Anyone see that Channel 4 programme on Narcissistic Personality Disorder tonight?
I'm surprised Blair and Brown weren't featured.
In the case of Muslim extremists could I suggest that their robes be tied with strong elastic before being placed on the man-sized clay trap? The sight of semi-naked screaming one-handed/one-eyed imams hurtling toward France before several hundred pairs of Holland & Holland's finest open up might cause undue distress to children the world over ...

Exactly. No mention of the national data base or of us being filmed 300 times a day by CCTV and speed cameras.
Another PM who'll ignore the will of the people - including the express will of the 672,000 who've - so far - signed the petition on Blair's website against vehicle tracking and road pricing.
Another con from the spin machine of the self styled heir to Blair.

Guido,
Are you being deliberately misleading by spinning this as the Tories being in line with No2ID when No2ID are very clear that opposition to just the ID cards themselves is pointless?
Instead of going to No2ID to pinch their logo, why not spend a few minutes to actually read the site?
I live in a Lab/Lib marginal seat where the Tories barely got 2000 votes at the last election, but if I lived in a Lab/Con marginal I'd probably vote Tory if I thought that they were genuinely committed to rolling back the whole ID card scheme and *all* of its associated schemes (the databases and all). This is a good sign, but they've got a long way to go before they're convincing - it was only 2 years ago that they were in favour of ID cards.
In breaking news - Police are seeking to interview Rod Aldridge, 51 of the WC2 area of Central London in connection with the Capita letter bomb. Aldridge is believed to be the only person in the UK without a motive for sending the device and they wish to eliminate him from their enquiries. Police warn that Aldridge may be dangerous and should not be approached.

Tories are twats. You voted for it, you're pretending you'd scrap it now everyone realises what a shit idea it is, but you won't when you're in Government, because you're liars.
Blair's 'property negotiator' Foster arrested (again) for money laundering. Independent today.
Tories have only done it on cost though! Principled? Nope, thinking of their wallets.
Where's the money going to come from to pay for the ID scheme? Brown's screwed the economy...
"Britain is now one of the most heavily indebted countries in the world....Total loans amount to 162pc of GDP, compared with 111pc in the US and just 27pc in Poland. "The UK is going to struggle," said Mr Chaudhry of Merrill Lynch..."

Anonymong 9.49..just maybe they are thinking of OUR wallets. Something this shower of shits have never done. F*ckwit.
@10:06pm
Yeah I know about IR35.
As for those working on Gov IT projects ...
Well what can I say? Work for the Gov and act surprised when they shit on you. It's not like they've got a track record or anything ...
It looks as if UKIP has decided to slit its throat, they all can't agree to renameing , oh hum ,next please.
UKIP should disband and join the BNP en masse. It's only Nigel's ego that's stopping it.

Go here, click the link at the bottom of the post. I think you might prefer this one; and as you can see, even little fat men can use it. Can even remove the stock and hide the piece in your pocket.

Amazingly canny strategy for one so inept. Maybe Davis has been getting better advice?
ID cards are evil.
Graham, were they thinking of our wallets when they voted for it in the first place, you stupid fucking tosser?
Roger - No deal.
I understand chip n pin has saved 60m in credit card fraud (about 8%) of the total fraud last year. So a great success that was. Would ID cards have helped stop this? Absolutely.
In 10 years time we will all be "pinned and chipped" just behind the ear so I don't know what all the fuss is about.
re: U heard it here 1st
Maybe it was sent by one of the many thousands of people that had their jobs stolen by Capita and sent overseas?
I'm surprised that it hasn't happened before. Maybe it has, this story has gone very quiet. More cover ups?
Oh great, in bed with a load of looney wankers, never mind, spares the protest vote.
Nice to see a politician caring about our civil liberties and old style freedoms, unlike the fascist--Code Napoleon laws in europe.
Oh great, in bed with a load of looney wankers, never mind, spares the protest vote.
I'm sure we don't think all Tories are looney wankers! Just most of you.

Sounds like DD's starting his next leadership campaign already.

That is indeed a fine piece of kit.

A silly thing to do as it would have cost him his ticket if caught.
