Ferret Watch : Brownites V Blairites

When Guido read the headline about the "Shambles" memo on Iain's blog on Saturday his first thought was "Gould". Gould tried to work with Brown some months ago as part of the perparation for an "orderly transition", but the short-lived co-operation fell apart in mistrust.

On Friday the Brownites believed the weekend would see a smear operation on Brown, Gordon's spin-meister Damian McBride put out an extraordinary statement dealing with three issues - Gordon's knowledge about loans, his lobbying for peerage on behalf of his two cronies, Ronnie Cohen (whom he secured a knighthood) and Wilf Stevenson, director of the Smith Institute, which serves as Gordon's private political secretariat.

The "McSnide" statement:
Rather than respond in piecemeal fashion to these unfounded allegations and smears, we wish to make the Chancellor's position absolutely clear - on the public record:

Neither is there any formal position for the Chancellor in the system of nominations for Labour working peers. And the Chancellor has never made any such submissions nominating an individual or individuals in letters or statements.

When asked to give his opinions informally about potential working peers to be nominated by the party, the Chancellor has, of course, been happy to give them on the basis that eligibility should naturally be based on service to the community and country, present and in the future.

Mr Stevenson, former director of the BFI and now director of the Smith Institute, and Sir Ronald Cohen of the Portland Trust are known by the Chancellor and he respects their service to public life and has no hesitation in saying they would have made valuable working peers.

But the fact is that no nomination has been made for either individual to the political honours committee, nor has the Chancellor ever submitted any letter or statement of nomination. In Sir Ronald's case, it is understood anyway that Sir Ronald has made it clear he would not wish to be considered.

We understand that neither Mr Stevenson nor Sir Ronald has ever made loans to the Labour party.

We also know that if any donations have been made they are anyway a matter of public record under the rules and neither individual has ever discussed any such donations with the Chancellor.

And, as the register of Members' interests confirms, at no time in Opposition and, of course, never subsequently have either of them made any donations to Mr Brown's political office.

And in respect of the Smith Institute, set up in memory of his friend, the late John Smith, Mr Brown welcomes and encourages the work they do and their contribution to the intellectual and policy debate of the country but Mr Brown has no financial nor any formal relationship with them.
Guido thinks Brown really wasn't involved in the Loans for Lordships scam, but McSnide does not really deny that Gordon lobbied for Ronnie and Wilf to get peerages to become working peers. Odd because Wilf protests that he is non-political and has no relationship with Brown, who in turn claims no formal relationship with the Smith Institute. A patently false claim, since we all know that it is a Brownite operation and that if Gordon had his way his friend Wilf would now be a Sith Lord...

The weekend ends at 12 o'clock Sunday night.

Monday morning watching the paint dry from Friday is over.

The excitement is intense. A photo appears with a couple of ferrets on it.

I am reminded of the candid camera stunt where someone stares up into nothingness, and soon a crowd gathers and likewise stares up at nothing.

Here we have an empty box. No matter how many people stare into it and make comments, it remains an empty box.

Twist in the peerage probe

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2006580482,00.html

THE loans-for-gongs probe took a new twist last night as cops launched an inquiry into an alleged top-level cover-up.

Until yesterday, the nine-month investigation was centred on £14million in secret loans made to Labour by rich backers later offered peerages.

But Scotland Yard is now investigating claims key Tony Blair aides tried to obstruct cops. It is alleged documents and e-mails that could be vital evidence have been withheld, and some have vanished.

A prosecution insider said: “There is more than a suspicion that evidence has not been handed over, people have colluded and the police are not being helped.” Prosecutors and police have discussed if it amounts to perverting the course of justice, which carries a maximum life sentence.

Meanwhile, Labour’s donors have disputed Tony Blair’s evidence to cops that gongs being investigated were given “expressly” for party service.

Curry tycoon Sir Gulan Moon, who lent £250,000, says he was told he would get a peerage “for charitable work and my business”.

Blair is becoming the political version of Pete Docherty, staggering from one disaster to another, despite all the PR and spin trying to convince us that he is a genius. If there was any political judgement left in the Labour Party it would have removed him six-months ago. The Labour Party is looking at the complete collapse of the Labour vote in May. The white working class are not going to vote Labour, the Muslim community are not going to vote Labour, the Black community are not going to vote Labour and the middle-class liberals are not going to vote Labour. So who is going to vote Labour?
Blairishambles or Bloodishambles?

Roll on May-Good by Tony-and you Gordon!

Javelin, apparently not according to the ever-reliable BBC:

"The prime minister's questioning was not under caution, meaning he is not a suspect."

How this squares with the anon plod's comment somewhere else on this blog, that he/the met routinely question witnesses sans caution in criminal investigations and then arrest them shortly afterwards, I have no idea.

Labour donor files shredded

DOCUMENTS showing how a Labour donor who is also a close aide to the chancellor was appointed to government positions have been shredded.
Officials at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) were last night forced to admit that they had destroyed records relating to Sir Ronald Cohen’s role on two Whitehall committees.

Cohen, a multi-millionaire venture capitalist, is close to Gordon Brown and their relationship is often compared with that of Lord Levy, Labour’s chief fundraiser, and Tony Blair.

Cohen has organised meetings for Brown in the Middle East and is likely to help with fundraising if the chancellor becomes prime minister...

...if Gordon's got nothing to hide, why are they shredding documents...

Hedgy said...

They are as guilty as fuck...if we did that, we would be inside in a twinkle of the eye..the cops have to be a little more careful or they will end up as traffic cops in North Wales, working for that odd eyed pratt of a CC.

javelin said...

According to the CPS - it's going to the cover-up not the crime (like Nixon).

The police are asking Number Ten to hand over a number of missing emails today. I guess the police will give them 24 or 48 hours. If Blair can't produce the emails he or his close staff members will be arrested for perverting the course of justice. If they can't show the emails didn't exist or hand them over Blair will go very quickly after that. So either expect Blair to resign this week or come out fighting.

I would call an emergency debate in the Commons and get Blair to make a statement - the Governance of the Country is looking very shakey.

Javelin, apparently not according to the ever-reliable BBC:

"The prime minister's questioning was not under caution, meaning he is not a suspect."

They're getting him on the cover-up not the crime. They must have presented the evidence to the CPS in a way that forced them to ask the question about the missing documents. This question came very quickly after the Blair interview. It looks more and more like a "Blair Trap."

Unlike footballers - Yates has calculated the probability of a goal before shooting, and figured a one-two to the perversion charge is more likely to land Tony in jail. You have to admire the man.

Brown may not have known the details of the "loan" scheme but what about the actual funds and the "mechanisms" used to process them. If the party Treasurer claims he knew nothing about these, who did, which bank accounts were used to hold them, who acted as signatories on those accounts, and where did the money eventually end up? If they were operated outside the hands of the Labour Party why should the party be held liable for the repayment of these "loans"? If that is the case those "lenders" might find they have difficulty recovering their money, what a shame!

On a parallel line isn't it surprising that the Labour rank and file members are willing to sit there silently doing nothing when their Party and/or future careers are going down the tubes, while their erstwhile "Leader" thrashes about trying to "manufacture" his "legacy". When will they pluck up enough courage to go and pat "wonder boy" on the shoulder and advise, "your time's up laddie,it's time to move on!"

Thanks to the national medical database we'll soon have access to the Blairs and Browns medical records. At last we can learn about Tony's heart, Leo's MMR jabs and Catherine's little upset, Gordon's mental condition. They can't opt out if they insist everyone else must be on it.

... eligibility should naturally be based on service to the community and country, present and in the future.

There can only be about one or two positions in the UK where a peerage or a knighthood for future conduct is granted automatically and I sincerely doubt that director of the Sith Institute is one of them. Could it be that this cop-out clause is a setup for the Brown favourites in the New Year's Honours list?

Clearly we are seeing some realpolitik from the Brown camp, ensuring that the water is well and truly mudded. The collataral being that the truth will for ever be buried under the spin and disinformation that has been launched with McCnut's offensive on behalf of his master.
This is a clear demonstration of the contempt for the social mores that these bastards hold, which is a reflection on the old adage of Goebbels, about lies, repetition and conviction.

On a more serious note, I just can't believe how stupid these Labour spivs are. Is it really possible that they've destroyed documents and in the process converted accusations carrying an maximum penalty of 10 years, into those with a tarrif of life imprisionment?

If true it suggests they either think they can get away with anything or love their leader so much they're prepared to lay their life down for him (almost literatlly). Was it Hazel Blears who said she'd jump in front of a bus for Tony?

I'm beginning to think that Blair's going to escape charges unless Levy or somebody from his private office fingers him. With loyalty like this around him, he's still got a few cards left.
